The British were not good rulers because they had only ruled for 20 years, while Spain had dominated Florida for over 288 years. The British were weak, the only reason they got Florida was because they were teamed with the French. This of course was before the Treaty of Paris. In 1672 the British had captured Havana but the use of it was nothing. Many of the British territories had recruiting programs that were not hard to like. Also when the British were working for good times luck was not there for them. Crops died within the first few months of their new colony. Also more diseases had really hurt the British. Diseases as in mosquito bites that cause malaria. For some colonists British times were very hard. This was a big reason why …show more content…
One raid on the American South was so serious Colonel John Baker had to surrender to the British. Soon after the attack the American Revolutionary War was almost about to happen. Some loyalists remained well..loyal to the British during that time period. The 2 sides as in the east and west side were very royal colonies. Even though the Spain had ruled for a longer period time. The British had one advantage they were able to recruit permanent settlers. Most of Florida's officials were looking to save money to keep public services going. The Proclamation of 1763 outlawed settlement west of the appalachians to the newly acquired Florida. The Britishers partners were the French. The French had strong desires to develop trade within their new colony and also outsiders around it. Each pioneer settler was given 100 acres of land and 50 acres per family member, i mean who could complain about that. Soon after this the British went to war against the British. After the war with France it nearly bankrupted the British government. The British were so worried about pirate attacks that they had to call a militia to assure safety. Around 1776 about 7 years before the British rule was over, West Florida was bigger than East Florida. West Florida had extended to Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana. This was also a major problem because they had problems increasing migration of the Indians into the region. Mostly because Farmers would endanger the fur trade with the
The history of North America centers around the struggle of England, France, and Spain to gain control of the continent. Settlers and their governments used different approaches on their efforts to colonization. These differences lead to advantages and disadvantages that resulted in the New World’s fate. France and Spain were governed by sovereigns whose rule was absolute. The English colonists were able to govern themselves and had plenty of freedom as long as they followed English law and were loyal to the king. England strengthened immigration from other nations, unlike France and Spain. By 1763, the English have defeated France and Spain in the French and Indian War establishing dominance over North America.
Britain switch to a Southern military strategy because the French joined the war against Britain to seize all of Britain’s sugar islands. Spain also took arms against Britain to regain Florida and the Fortress of Gibraltar at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea respectively. British thought that the best plan was to revise the military strategy by defending the West Indies and capture the rich tobacco and rice growing colonies: Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia.
After the Spanish and the French ignored the coast north of Florida due to the inconvenient climate, the English took the opportunity to colonize in an environment distanced from rival exploration. This colonization took place in the area around the eastern coast, and was originally motivated by the English need to create more opportunities for employment. The English colonization started off very slowly in Virginia, where colonist started feuds with local native tribe, and ignored agricultural needs in order to chase after potential silver and gold. In the following years, Virginia's colonists suffered from wars with the natives, famine, and diseases, until a new shipment of colonists and supplies came in 1610. Subsequently, teaching the
Colonists and Natives were too confident and they tried to survive in the deathful fighting's and attacks! In 1607 the first English colonists arrived on the James River. They were sent by the Virginia company to find riches like gold, copper, and metal. They brought 104 men with them and three ships: The Susan Constant, the Discovery, and the Godspeed. When they arrived on the James River they also founded Jamestown which was the first English settlement in 1607 although before the colonists even got to the New World the emperor Powhatan was in power. Although why did so many colonists died in early Jamestown between 1607 and 1611? The reason why so many colonists died in Jamestown between 1607 and 1611 was because of disease, attack of Natives, and drought. So in the next few paragraphs, I will prove using historical evidence that colonists died because of disease, drought, and attacks of natives.
Battling in Europe finished after a fizzled Spanish attack of British associate Portugal. By 1763, French and Spanish ambassadors started to look for peace. In the subsequent Treaty of Paris, Great Britain secured noteworthy regional increases in North America, including all French territory east of the Mississippi stream, and Spanish Florida, despite the fact that the treaty returned Cuba to Spain. Prior to the war, the estimation of their association with Great Britain was self-evident. With its decision, this never again was valid; it now appeared that a proceeded with reliance upon the motherland, rather than bringing advantages, would include most cumbersome commitments.
Believe it or not there were some colonists during the American Revolution that supported British rule. Loyalists are what they were called. They remained loyal to England and King George. However, there were also two other groups along with the loyalists' which include the patriots and the people who were neutral. The few colonists that remained loyal to Great Britain, during the American Revolution, were wrong in doing so, even though Britain had a nice, stable government.
When Great Britain defeated Spain in the Spanish Armada for control of the Atlantic Ocean, this allowed Great Britain to finally begin to colonize the New World. In 1607, the British settled the New World with their third, but first permanent colony called the Virginia Colony. Even though the Virginia Colony was Great Britain’s first colony in the New World, it was not easy trying to keep the colony up and running. The colonists did have hardships during their colonization which made living in the Virginia Colony very difficult but overtime the colonists made the Virginia Colony into a very profitable colony after defeating majority of the hardships that it faced.
Throughout the 17th century, the English faced many hardships. The settlers of Jamestown had faced misfortune of the new land such as disease and malnutrition, and failure of crops. Over time the English built their economic and social structure with perfecting crops, indentured slaves and building a new society that would spark others to explore.
Florida was dominated by the Seminoles, in the 18th century. Florida was discovered by the Spanish people in 1513, it was dominated by french people and then Spain dominated it again. Spain dominated Florida again by the Treaty of Paris in 1783. U.S.A. claimed for it and they signed the Adam Onis Treaty in 1819 and they gave Florida to the U.S. in 1845.
Ponce de Leon, who led the first European voyage to Florida in 1513, claimed Florida as Spain’s territory but the French were also interested in the territory, which led them to build Fort Caroline in 1564. Because Spain wanted to show France that they owned the territory, they destroyed Fort Caroline in 1565 while building their own: St. Augustine. Not only were the French interested but England as well. This resulted to the Seven Years War and the French and Indian Wars. In 1763, under the Treaty of Paris, England gained Florida but soon lost it to Spain in 1783 after they recognized Florida’s independence. When the U.S. made the Louisiana Purchase from France, Florida’s state was unclear. There were many boundary disputes in Florida and in order to rebel against Spain’s claim of ownership, Americans decided to settle
Also, Spain gave the United States trouble. Spain took Florida which had been given to the United States by England in 1783. No country took the United States seriously and would continue to walk all over them until the United States could stand up for itself.
The people in the colonies began to become very different than the British as generations passed. Over time the american settlers started to get there own system of living life down. As they started to learn how to grow there own food and build
It all started when the French and Indian war ended with the treaty of paris and the British got the lesser value of the territories exchanged after the war. It ended with Britain getting Canada from France and Florida from Spain. In return France got Guadalupe and Martinique which were sugar islands and were worth a lot more money than Canada and would make more money than canada in the long run. Spain got Cuba with its sugar plantations and the Philippines with its close distance to china. Do not forget that Britain
The war seemed to separate the colonists into three separate groups. Ones that were loyal to Britain, which were called “loyalists”. Most loyalists had “business ties” with Britain and saw being on Britain’s side of the war as being “defenders”. While other loyalists despised those that rebelled and assumed their reason to rebel was to obtain more money from the empire. The second group was with George Washington called the “Patriots”, who were fighting for the freedom from Britain, and the third group were people that were trying to go about their lives and not get involved in the war. Though slaves were asked to participate in the war, most went to Britain’s side in exchange for freedom. In 1775, Washington and his army win the battle at Saratoga and this ultimately wins over France as an
