Authors all write in different ways. They all have different minds and ideas. Even though authors think differently, they still are alike in a weird way. They also don’t think alike and they all have their different ways of writing their thoughts. While reading all 4 different essays, I’ve learned a lot about trying to understand how other people think. All four essays have something in common, and I believe that “ignorance” is one of the biggest common factors in all of the stories. They may all have a different way in showing ignorance because every essay has a different story line. Edward, was a very ignorant man who thought that whites were the only people who could live up to success, where she knew the facts and would prove to herself that she was an african american woman who would be successful in her life.
That man, Edward, reminds me more of Berube’s “Paying for Freedom” essay. “Paying for Freedom” goes into say that we don’t just get freedom, we have to work for it. Hard. We can’t sit around and wait for everything we want to just fall right into our laps. Nobody in life can be ignorant and uneducated in the things they are trying to educate someone else about. They also need to understand how to respect other opinions with certain things like that.
Ignorance is something that people don’t always understand in today’s time. There is something about ignorance that people don’t always understand. Maybe they don’t understand what ignorance is, but they seem to think that’s actually the answer for some things. Ignorance plays a big part in “The Intellectual Free Lunch,” by Kinsley. Kinsley goes on to teach us about how we need to know the facts before we pass it on to others. We aren’t allowed to come up with an answer to something because we think it should be that way, we need to know the knowledge behind everything that we try to pass onto others. “Graduation Day” illustrates Maya Angelou’s experience on her graduation day. All of Angelou’s feelings, reasoning, and thoughts of her graduation day are depicted between the pages of her short story. Her text covers multiple different aspects of a segregated community’s lifestyle and explains their decisions on coping with their limitations. The power of words impacts the community in several ways during Angelou’s story. Because words impact and shape people, they influence individuals into themselves.
In the book Fahrenheit 451 the theme was the conflict between one being knowledgeable or being ignorant. The themes definition following this book would be people who read even though banned would be the knowledgeable people and they live a true happy life but the ones that don't understand what books purpose really is and don't see how it makes humans lives happier they are are ignorant.I feel this is a main theme in this book because at first montag is considered one of the ignorant people but with different people changing his thoughts and montag realizing the firemen and the people who don't read are the ignorant ones and that books fulfill your life a lot more you just have to understand them because some bring emotions that the ignorant people think is bad. Gerd Gigerenzer in “Deliberate Ignorance” distinguishes what this self-chosen defiance of knowledge means and what people feel when confining themselves to the situation. When someone willfully decides to remain ignorant even when the answer remains easily obtained, that person has decided to become deliberately ignorant. Gigerenzer understands how systematic ignorance can wreak havoc on large populations and impact people’s daily lives. This systematic production of ignorance deflects, covers up, and obscures facts. He stated a prime example of this “the tobacco industry’s efforts to keep people unaware of the evidence that smoking causes cancer” (Gigerenzer 1). In contrast deliberate ignorance involves a phenomenon where people choose not to have specified information.
Maya Angelou and Sherman Alexie detailed their lives as a person of color growing up in predominantly white America. When reflecting back on their lives, both authors used various techniques in order to effectively make an imprint on the reader of the trials and tribulations both authors had to go through and what they learned from the experience. By analyzing Sherman Alexie’s “Indian Education” and Maya Angelou’s “Champion of the World”, a stark contrast can be seen in how two authors can use structure and various other techniques to tell a story with a similar subject to a different effect compared to the other.
Everyone has ignorance and it will always be present. It is a matter of how knowledge intervenes that judges the outcome. James Madison describes a similar aspect. In literary education, from childhood to maturity, individuals are taught how to write not to improve themselves as critical thinkers, but to fulfill the requirements given to them in a prompt. Whether to analyze or argue, this form of writing has led to a cease of literary improvement in students today, making many question the effectiveness of writing classes. Mike Bunns, in his article “To Read like a Writer”, explores this topic and stresses the necessity for young readers to critically examine the author’s choices in order to improve their own pieces of work. Bunns effectively argues to his audience of college students that improved comprehension comes from focusing on the rhetorical choices authors decide to make in their compositions by tying personal narratives with repetitive questioning throughout his article.
Imagine a world in which one is taught how and what to think. In this world no one is given the opportunity to form their own opinions. Books are illegal because they might generate ideas other than those which are taught. Knowledge is what allows a person to understand right from wrong, but if it is ingrained in a person to follow a set of rules without having an understanding for them, it’s most likely that the person will rebel. That is what occurs in Fahrenheit 451. Books are banned and, if found, are burned along with the house they are located in. This rule instilled fear and curiosity in the hearts of certain people within their society. Fear of getting their house burned and curiosity about the contents of these books people are sacrificing their houses and even some lives for. The answer is simple: knowledge. In Fahrenheit 451, the power and value of ideas allows one to see the world’s beauty clearly through their own eyes, comprehend and cognize the rules, and instigate conflict.
“You have tried to destroy me and although I perish daily I shall not be moved,” (Angelou, 2014), says Maya Angelou in her Commencement speech to the 1992 Spelman College graduates. Poet and award-winning author, Maya Angelou, is most well known for her poetry, essay collection, and memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Angelou happened to be the first black female cable car conductor who later started a career in theatre and music (Maya Angelou: Poet and Historian, n.d.). Once her acting and musical career began to take off, Angelou began touring with productions and released her first album Miss Calypso (Maya Angelou Fast Facts, 2017). Later, Angelou earned a Tony Award nomination for her role in the play Look Away and an Emmy Award nomination for the work she performed in the television mini-series Roots (Maya Angelou: Poet, Civil Rights Activist, Author, Activist, 2017). Angelou was also the first African American woman to have her screenplay produced (Maya Angelou: Poet, Civil Rights Activist, Author, Activist, 2017). Out of the number of poetry collections Angelou published, Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water ‘Fore I Die happened to be her most famous collection that was also nominated for the Pulitzer Prize (Maya Angelou: Poet, Civil Rights Activist, Author, Activist, 2017). The focus of this paper is to critique Angelou’s credibility, sincerity, and appeal to her whole audience in her delivery during the Spelman Commencement Address in 1992.
Angelou begins the excerpt narrating the “graduation epidemic” surrounding the town in the third person. Starting with paragraph 6, Angelou shifts to a first-person narrative, which provides an informative insight into her personal experiences regarding her graduation. This shift in perspective marks important stylistic differences: initially Angelou focuses on conveying the experiences of the class as a whole, whereas after paragraph 6 she focuses on her own experiences, through which several contrasts can be drawn. Rhetorically, these contrasts signify that identical rhetorical strategies will have completely different connotations. In fahrenheit 451 struggle revolves around the tension between knowledge and ignorance. Firemen destroy knowledge of all forms, books in perticlar. This doesn’t stop Montag though. He is given many struggles because he wants to learn. I feel like this is somewhat relevant to nowadays society. We faced with those who want to be knowledged but majority has turned to substance and have become consumed in it. Society in fahrenheit 451 is very similar to today’s society. The education system is at a falling point and ignorance is growing. What though should become more important substance or knowledge and growing to a person.
Maya Angelou and Amy Tan discuss religious problems and culture differences in their literature. The authors have captured these differences by their past experiences of friends and family. Both authors come from a diverse culture, but both face the same harsh society of the American culture and beliefs. The Author's both tell about situations in their short stories of being outcasts and coming from different racial backgrounds and trying to triumph over these obstacles. Angelou and Tan both have a very unique writing ability and style in their short stories.
In the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray bradbury, Bradbury shows that behind the destructive fire and the burning of books, citizens believe that the key to happiness is ignorance. In the story, the citizens of the dystopia don’t question what is hidden from them, but the main character of the story ponders what he is told and discovers truth and happiness through the knowledge gained from reading stolen books.
Ignorance is a slavery tool that is widely used by slaveholders to administer acts of slavery. Initially, many individuals were made to believe that slavery was a natural occurrence. People believed that blacks did not have the capability of actively participating in their civil rights, and therefore should be owned by white community. In this narrative, the whites are depicted as individuals who access power and keep blacks from the time they are born till they die. Even though her mother was a light skin black woman, she did not want to live her life as a lie, by living as a white woman. Her mother embraced her blackness, which forced her to find work as a maid; her employers did not treat her with the same dignity as a white woman would receive. After seeing what her mother went through for accepting her blackness and living her life as a black woman, she knew that was not the life she wanted to live.
