The first four paragraphs all serve as foreshadowing. The story starts in the present. The girl is a teacher at a school that is getting a new headmaster. As the other teachers are intrigued by him, she seemed unsettled at his arrival. Others even make a comment that she is in a bad mood. As readers, we can tell that the girl is not found of the new headmaster and we do not understand why, yet. It is not clear that they once knew each other, but it is obvious that this is foreshadowing the reason behind the girl’s uneasiness. The title also foreshadowed that the man had sexually abused her. In “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury, Bradbury focused on multiple craft moves such as similes, dialogue, and foreshadowing to show different ways to describe the story throughout the book. In the story there is a nursery that is controlled by the children who live in the house. The nursery is in this very advanced house that does everything for them. The children's parents want to get rid of the house to live a normal life but their children don’t like that because they love the nursery. Eventually the children's rage of the parents taking the nursery away ends with them killing their parents. The craft moves show the arguments, descriptions and foreshadowing to show the reader how spoiled the children really are.
The short story presents women as aware but misunderstood by men through use of narrative point of view. In society women are usually seen as inferior to men, and therefore often don’t get the acknowledgement they deserve. “The women held their secrets because when they mentioned it to their husbands or brothers they were laughed at….Instead of sympathy, the husbands and brothers now had a secret weapon”. The narrator comes into the kitchen to see a huge mess and her mom in the middle of it. As she is walking in a piece of the debris almost hits her in the head. “I ducked as a piece of tile flew at me”. This already raises the tension in the story because the narrator has already almost been injured by a flying piece of tile. From the mothers point of view nothing is wrong and waves it off as it is was nothing which angers the narrator even more. “ I pushed past her to get the broom, but she grabbed me by the elbow. A feeling of nervous ness swelled inside me.” If that is not enough the narrators mother decides its the perfect time to tell her that in the next few days she will be leaving her mother and going to New Mexico for 3 months. “ But what am I supposed to do? That’s three whole months” The daughter is steamed because she is going to have to move again to a new place were she has not friends, but from the mothers point of view she is sending her child away so she can be safe while she going off to work in a unfamiliar place. The mother cannot see the situation from her daughters perspective that is why the passage progresses the way it does. It eventually leads to them fighting and the daughter locking herself in her room. Parents shouldn’t spoil their children as spoiling children causes dangerous results. In “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury the parents spoil their kids that later wish that the parents were dead. Parents don’t allow their children to do certain things, following this they wish death upon their parents. George and Lydia, parents of spoiled children Peter and Wendy, deny their children access to a magical nursery that transforms and does whatever the children imagine. This causes the children to wish that their parents were dead, which is then fulfilled by the nursery. In
Foreshadowing is a vital ingredient to any suspenseful story. It hints at the idea that something is off-kilter, without ever revealing exactly what that something is. This leaves readers with an uneasy feeling about the plot, but they can’t quite figure out why. Because of that suspicious feeling, readers are left with a burning desire to find out what happens on the next page. Foreshadowing can be achieved many different ways, such as through eree names, unpleasant conversations, and odd occurrences.

In the story the author portrays the protagonist differently from the other characters because she talks about the physical appearance of other characters and when it comes to the narrator we have no idea what she looks like but she is developed partially through her relationship with other characters, although we the readers do come the find out that the narrator is around the age of 15-17 years old and we can assume that she has a bad relationship with her parents because first of all she talks about them maybe once or twice in the whole story and second of all we know that they sent her to boarding school so that alone proves that her relationship with them is lacking. She is repressing memories from the night of the incident and from her life in general, and this is shown when she says, “I hate to repeat it, my life” (41), and “I don’t want to talk about her” (43). The narrator is also highly unreliable because she isn’t even certain of the validity of the story she is telling. She says, “What? Did I say that?...Then maybe I do remember it, it’s all so confusing and…” (45). Because this story is first-person, we can know only what the narrator reveals. Raymond Carver, author of “Popular Mechanics”, is a minimalist writer. Using the least amount of setting and character dynamics Carver makes the audience analyze the small details and actions that the people in the story do that would be seemingly nothing. The word ‘little’ at the beginning of the story is something that a lot of readers do not catch the first time reading this story, but it is a very important word that plays into the rest of the story. Carver uses small actions to grab the reader’s attention later in the story. Small actions, such as the woman picking up the baby’s picture and the knocked-down flower pot, take on larger significances, such as what the state of the relationship is, in “Popular Mechanics”.
