Not far into the play, it is quickly discovered that Abigail is out to do something. It is soon found out that Abigail and John Proctor had an affair when Abigail worked for John and Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail fell for Proctor and now she is trying to get rid of Elizabeth to have John for herself; there is a slight problem when Abigail realizes John will not leave Elizabeth for her, so Abigail starts plotting against Elizabeth trying to eliminate her. Something Abigail did not tell Parris is that she drank a charm of blood to banish Elizabeth. After Abigail tells the girls that she told Parris everything, Betty woke up. Betty - “You drank blood, Abby! You didn’t tell him that!” Abigail - “Betty, you never say that again! You will never --” Betty - You did, you did! You drank a charm to kill John Proctor’s wife!
In The Crucible, I assume that the character Abigail is a static character. Abigail is considered a static character for the reason that no matter what her feelings never change. She does whatever she is yearning to be happy with herself. It makes no difference if she is hurting other people as long she is joyous. An example is how she accuses Elizabeth Proctor of being a witch even though it's not true. She only did it for the reason that she thought she would be able to be with John Proctor. The character John Proctor is a dynamic character. John is considered a dynamic character because he changes his feelings in the entire play. In the beginning he was a quiet farmer and now he is a brave man with a great deal of courage. In the beginning
At the end of act 1, Abigail is to blame for starting the hysteria because of her actions, and by blaming other people. When Reverend Parris says to Abigail, “Then you were conjuring spirits last night.” and she responds by saying “Not I, sir- Tituba and Ruth.” (17) because even though she was apart of conjuring spirits she began to blame others so that she doesn't have a bad name, and so that everybody doesn't suspect Abigail. During act 1, when the story starts to unroll Abigail gets more and more worried. Parris was questioning Abigail and she responded, “(in terror) No one was naked! You mistake yourself uncle.” (11) When people started to get onto Abigail she was very nervous because she knew that she did wrong but she didn't want to get
Abigail is a powerful and smart leader that uses intimidation and is willing to do anything to obtain Jon Proctor. Abigail is the antagonist in the play and becomes a leader by admitting that she has worked with the devil but seeks redemption. When she becomes a leader, she abuses her power by intimidating people and accusing them of witchcraft. Another characteristic that she has is that she is smart. Through the play, she is able to confront different problems and uses every little opportunity to her advantage. Last, she is willing to do anything to obtain John Proctor, even if means eliminating Elizabeth.
In The Crucible Abigail had a significant impact on the trials. Abigail had a significant impacts on the trials because she lies and manipulates a bad situation into something that will benefit herself and makes everyone believe her. In Act three Abigail says “But God made my face;you cannot want to tear my face. Envy is a deadly sin, Mary” (Miller 195). This quote states that Abigail lies and manipulates the situation in the trial when Mary Warren accusing Abigail of witchcraft by lying that she saw Mary Warren turn into a bird and that Mary was going to hurt her. Therefore, by Abigail putting the blame on Mary and because she know as a well proper young lady she has everyone fooled in believing that Mary is the one that is controlling the
The entire book “The Crucible” is written based upon the Salem Witch Trials. There is constant paranoia about who is a witch in the town and Abigail Williams uses this to get what she wants. Abigail is motivated to keep the fear of witchcraft alive in the town of Salem because of her desire to be with John proctor, to get rid of her competition, Elizabeth Proctor, and with her idea for god to cleanse the town.
When a person is backed into a corner and facing serious consequences, it is common for them to begin self-preservation and attempt to put the blame on others, lie, or do whatever it takes for them to get free of their accusations. Abigail Williams uses such approach when accused of witchcraft along with multiple other girls in The Crucible. However, Abigail is manipulative and selfish, which aids her ability to keep herself from being charged with witchcraft and killed. In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, the author uses direct and indirect characterization to reveal that Abigail Williams is as much of a dynamic character, as she is a round character. Arthur Miller immediately shows direct characterization by stating, “...
The central character for The Crucible could be Abigail. Abigail is characterized as being a fabricator with destructive tendencies. Though she refuses to admit her name has been tainted in the town, Abigail knows of her carnage in the village has ruined it for good. Abigail is accused of witchcraft in the beginning of the act and therefore attempting to lie her way through it, she ends up admitting it. But alternately of taking the punishment, she blames someone else for pressuring her into it. The quote “Don’t lie! She comes to me while I sleep; she’s always making me dream corruptions!” (Miller 14) shows that Abby had admitted dreaming and doing corrupt things, but puts the blame on others. At the end of the act, the blame switches from
In The Crucible by Arthur Miller , we are presented with the question if there was a real justification in trials. Many would agree there was no justice whatsoever in the witch trials , all that happened in the Salem witch trials was a group of Girls that claim were possessed by the devil and accused women in the village of witchcraft because they were caught by Rev. Parris, they were Afraid of what could happen to them so they accused women of low-lives to accuse knowing that they wouldn't be believed. I'd say that the mastermind behind all of this is Abigail. Who I think is doing all of this to get Proctor all to herself and take Elizabeth proctor out of John's life, she is also mad that Elizabeth dismissed her from her job , so she will
She charges Elizabeth with attempted murder and says she was stabbed with a needle while eating and accused Elizabeth's spirit. At dinner with Reverend Parris, Abigail screams and falls to the floor and “stuck two inches in [her] flesh, he draw out a needle” ( Miller 71). She testified that it was Elizabeth's spirit to accuse her as a witch so that she can be hung and Abigail can have John. Her plan makes it to the court where she lies about her affair with John Proctor to save her image. In court Proctor confesses to their affair and explains to the judge that “she thinks to dance with [him] on my wife’s grave”(Miller 102). Abigail wishes to exterminate Elizabeth and have Proctor to herself, but Proctor is determined to show Abigail's true colors that he is willing to ruin his
Abigail's Cause and Effect. Manipulation, jealousy and revenge. Reasons to blame for the disgusting amount of hangings that took place in the Salem Witch Trials. What started off as a modest group of recalcitrant children, turned into a case of many innocent deaths. Even though some may say she went insane or had issues, I believe she was purely evil.
Atrocious, malicious, venomous, these aren’t the kind of words one uses to compliment someone. When used, they are a hateful description utilized in a very specific opinion. Sometimes, these opinions are purposely established in a reader’s thoughts by an author, without even directly stating them, such as how Arthur Miller constructed Abigail in The Crucible. In the play, he purposely shapes a reader’s opinion of Abigail as vicious with indirect details, using what she says, how she acts, and how others think of her.
In The Crucible, Abigail could act as a source of blame for many of the events that had occurred. However, there are multiple factors that might sway one’s opinion in the opposite direction. The society she was within was corrupt as it was. She couldn’t help the environment that she was raised in. Poor decisions had led her into some tough situations that would make getting out of very difficult.
Abigail Williams was partially motivated by her desperation to be with John Proctor. Elizabeth Proctor rightly suspected that John Proctor, her husband, had a one-time affair with Abigail Williams, the niece of Reverend Parris, who was hired by the family as a servant. Consequently, Elizabeth fired Abigail after John admitted his actions to his wife, leaving Abigail fueled with contempt towards Elizabeth. Accordingly, Abigail would have done anything to get revenge and get rid of Elizabeth. Furthermore, John Proctor did not feel any affection for Abigail and knew that his actions were abject.
think and do. As an audience, at this stage we have a mixed opinion of
Abigail is clearly a victim in her society. She has lied to Parris, Danforth and may other people in the salem town. She has blamed so many innocent people of witchcraft. She has committed adultery with Mr John Proctor and she is very jealous of Mr John Proctor's wife, Elizabeth Proctor. Everyone thought of Abigail as the sweet innocent little girl so no one wanted to jump to conclusions and think or say it was her. So she got away with a lot of things in salem.
