In The Crucible, I assume that the character Abigail is a static character. Abigail is considered a static character for the reason that no matter what her feelings never change. She does whatever she is yearning to be happy with herself. It makes no difference if she is hurting other people as long she is joyous. An example is how she accuses Elizabeth Proctor of being a witch even though it's not true. She only did it for the reason that she thought she would be able to be with John Proctor. The character John Proctor is a dynamic character. John is considered a dynamic character because he changes his feelings in the entire play. In the beginning he was a quiet farmer and now he is a brave man with a great deal of courage. In the beginning
Abigail Williams is a very deceitful person throughout The Crucible, she can be characterized as deceitful because throughout the book she often pretended to be a perfect puritan in the courts and during church, but really she had been the opposite the whole time. In the beginning of the book, Abigail can be described as deceitful because she began the whole witch trails by telling Reverend Parris that it was all Tituba and her witchcraft the other night, that she had made her do the things that they did. In the middle of the book, she can be characterized as deceitful through this line, “Suddenly, from an accusatory attitude, her face turns, looking into the air above- it is truly frightened.” Also, shown throughout the words of John Proctor breathless & in agony, “It is a whore!” These lines display her deceitfulness throughout the beginning of the book. At the end of the book, she displays her deceitfulness when she had asked John Proctor how his wife Elizabeth Proctor was when in all reality she had no interest in how she was doing which showed that even at the very end of the book she still had been a deceitful
John proctor is hesitant to expose Abigail’s lies because he fears and knows she will accuse him of adultery. Back then, it was a crime to commit such acts. “PROCTOR: You will not judge me more, Elizabeth. I have good reason to think before I charge fraud on Abigail, and I will think on it. Let you look to your own improvement before you go to judge your husband anymore.”(Miller 58). In this example, Elizabeth tries to question him, and John Proctor feeling ashamed and guilty attacks her back, trying to change the subject. The old psychology trick, to look back on herself, and not think about John’s Proctors positon. When asked what are all the commandments he stutters and forgets all but one, which was the adultery. Which is ironic, since he committed it and having reason
In conclusion, the numerous characters in The Crucible embodied ranging themes. Abigail rose to power through the witch trials. Many innocent villagers were accused and executed. Her power to manipulate her followers and the town served to prove her deceptive nature. John Proctor protected his reputation by refusing to the sign the confession, and became the tragic hero of the play. The crucible came to be a symbol of superstition and paranoia that tore the community apart in the play, which provided this play meaningful significance
All people commissioned to hang in Salem were innocent… how did they end up there? Through the lies and accusations of Abigail, a teenager whose head was filled with power, revenge, and her reputation. In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible he clearly shows that Abigail is guilty in more ways than one. She is guilty of lies…accusation… and even murder.
Abigail’s malicious intent causes her to use the fear of the girls who were allegedly caught in the woods doing witchery with Abigail to manipulate them into thinking about the consequences in order to protect herself. By committing this disrespectful sin, she gained total control and power over the girls and commanded them to do as she ordered or she would hurt them. Abigail proceeds to tell the girls, “Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you. And you know I can do it.” (Miller 20) In this quote, Abigail is threatening and manipulating the other girls into following her lead. Many townspeople
Abigail is one of the main characters in the book, The Crucible. She is an evil character who is rather selfish and is inconsiderate of other people. And because of her personality, she has conflicts with many characters in the book. Best example, she has conflicts with John and Elizabeth Proctor. She is a wicked child who would do anything to get what she wants and knows how to manipulate people and the situation to get to where she wants to be. Her conflicts began with a little desire to take John Proctor away from his wife, Elizabeth Proctor, and own him to herself and only herself.
The Crucible Can a bunch of lies kill 19 people? No, usually not but in history this has happened before. In the late 1600’s a series of lies lead to the death of many innocent people. In The Crucible Arthur Miller uses Abigail Williams lies to leave a negative opinion of Abigail. In The Crucible Abigail is manipulative and through her speech, actions and affair we have a negative opinion of Abigail.
At the end of act 1, Abigail is to blame for starting the hysteria because of her actions, and by blaming other people. When Reverend Parris says to Abigail, “Then you were conjuring spirits last night.” and she responds by saying “Not I, sir- Tituba and Ruth.” (17) because even though she was apart of conjuring spirits she began to blame others so that she doesn't have a bad name, and so that everybody doesn't suspect Abigail. During act 1, when the story starts to unroll Abigail gets more and more worried. Parris was questioning Abigail and she responded, “(in terror) No one was naked! You mistake yourself uncle.” (11) When people started to get onto Abigail she was very nervous because she knew that she did wrong but she didn't want to get
The Crucible is written as a play by Arthur Miller, the play is about the Salem Witch Trials. It all started with a group of young girls that were dancing around a fire at the middle of the night which is considered a sin and they chose to lie about it. After this event the leader of the group who is Abigail started to accuse many villagers of being a witch and john proctor wanted to ended it so he can save his wife from being in jail so he forces mary warren. One of the major reasons why she started to accuse people is because she wanted to be with john proctor in order to that she has to get rid of elizabeth of being a witch.in the the end many innocent people got hanged. Is to inform people of being wrongly accused.
Abigail is a powerful and smart leader that uses intimidation and is willing to do anything to obtain Jon Proctor. Abigail is the antagonist in the play and becomes a leader by admitting that she has worked with the devil but seeks redemption. When she becomes a leader, she abuses her power by intimidating people and accusing them of witchcraft. Another characteristic that she has is that she is smart. Through the play, she is able to confront different problems and uses every little opportunity to her advantage. Last, she is willing to do anything to obtain John Proctor, even if means eliminating Elizabeth.
Atrocious, malicious, venomous, these aren’t the kind of words one uses to compliment someone. When used, they are a hateful description utilized in a very specific opinion. Sometimes, these opinions are purposely established in a reader’s thoughts by an author, without even directly stating them, such as how Arthur Miller constructed Abigail in The Crucible. In the play, he purposely shapes a reader’s opinion of Abigail as vicious with indirect details, using what she says, how she acts, and how others think of her.
In The Crucible, Abigail could act as a source of blame for many of the events that had occurred. However, there are multiple factors that might sway one’s opinion in the opposite direction. The society she was within was corrupt as it was. She couldn’t help the environment that she was raised in. Poor decisions had led her into some tough situations that would make getting out of very difficult.
Numerous innocent people were killed on behalf of religious beliefs of being witches. Betty, a young girl, was found in the woods “conjuring” the devil with other girls and became severely ill after this. Preceding Betty’s suspicious illness was the Salem Witch trials. People believed Betty to be the victim of a witch. Abigail, one of the girls who was with Betty, declares numerous innocent women as witches, trying to protect herself from what she was doing in the woods. Abigail’s claims caused people from the town, including the Proctors, Parris, and Abigail, to protect their names whether positively or negatively. In The Crucible, Arthur Miller shows that people who value one’s reputation will protect it despite how it affects
In The Crucible Abigail had a significant impact on the trials. Abigail had a significant impacts on the trials because she lies and manipulates a bad situation into something that will benefit herself and makes everyone believe her. In Act three Abigail says “But God made my face;you cannot want to tear my face. Envy is a deadly sin, Mary” (Miller 195). This quote states that Abigail lies and manipulates the situation in the trial when Mary Warren accusing Abigail of witchcraft by lying that she saw Mary Warren turn into a bird and that Mary was going to hurt her. Therefore, by Abigail putting the blame on Mary and because she know as a well proper young lady she has everyone fooled in believing that Mary is the one that is controlling the
A lie can travel all around town before the truth gets out of bed. Such as Abigail, the worst character in the play, for the reason that she is so irritating and lies. For example, when Mary was talking about seeing spirits and the fainting was all false but Abigail was still pretending as if it was all real. Mary was told to tell the truth about the spirits and fainting, but later Abigail would pretend to see Mary’s spirit.
