“Life is difficult” is a small, but powerful quote. In the book “The Road Less Traveled” when M. Scott Peck states this, there is a deeper meaning. People often believe life is easy, so when they come upon trials they believe they are the only ones suffering. People tend to look at other people's lives and not recognize they to are suffering in their own way. Peck states “Once we truly know that life is difficult - once we truly understand and accept it - then life is no longer difficult.” People see obstacles in their life and think they are unique to themselves, but more than likely, there is someone else in the same situation. The first type of discipline is delaying gratification. Using delayed gratification, a person has to go through pain before they can experience pleasure. Many students use this method; during the week they study hard and do homework, so when the weekend comes they can relax and enjoy their time off. Another type of discipline is accepting responsibility for actions. Before solving a problem, a person must accept responsibility for the problem. For an example, a student who fails a test must accept responsibility for bad grade, then it will be easier to move forward and work towards the next exam. The third type of discipline is dedication to the truth. A person must see reality as it is, rather than what they want it to be. Once they decides to see life this way, they can change the direction their life is headed. A person who is struggling with their weight, will often lie to themselves to make them feel better, but when they began to see the truth and realize they are not happy, they will change to a healthier. Peck's final kind of discipline is balancing. A person must change what they want, so they can have what they need. Although it would be fun to drive 100 miles per hour, people choose to drive at a safe speed because they want to stay alive. To me, love is not always fancy and extravagant dates, this kind of love eventually fades. In a relationship there becomes a point where a couple gets married and has children, and going out to dinner every weekend is not logical. Staying home on a Saturday evening to take care of a sick spouse and children is much more loving than going out. Although that may not be anyone's “dream” Saturday night, it is true love because a parent is putting their children's and significant other’s needs ahead of their own.
