The Renaissance was a creative period. “First called the rinascimento, Italian for ‘rebirth’ the period came to be known by its French name, the Renaissance.” This period can also be defined as the rebirth of classical learning, literature, and art. During this Renaissance artists branched away from the restraint of Byzantine Art. Early in the Renaissance, Florence was not part of the unified country of Italy. Italy was divided into different states such as Florence, Milan, Venice, etc. Florence became the founder of the rebirth. One reason Florence was so prominent was because Florentines praised their hometown. Extraordinary wealthy accumulated in Florence. Merchants and wealthy families controlled the political power in Florence. Florence saw itself as the ideal government and city. They were extremely proud of the government. Freedom and choices of the individual was guaranteed. Other’s sought to destroy Florence, such as Duke of Milan and King of Naples. Fortunately for Florence, Duke of Milan suddenly died of the plague and King of Naples died before ever conquering Florence. The Florentines saw these victories as signs of God’s favor and protection over the city.
There was a shift in art from religious to a focus on human view. Artists studied the natural world intently. There was a drive for artists to perfect their understanding of the human anatomy and perspective. Artists sought to perfect of human forms with correct proportions. Artists developed new
