Printed and Digital
Analyzing some aspects of the relationship between print and digital reading. A first essential aspect: more than indicating the substitution of texts printed by the digital ones, the readers of our universe of research coexistence of these two formats (Dourish & Mazmanian, 2013). There is no disjunction, for the readers that would take the form of reading in print or digital, reading in one or the other; is verified in the practice that readers read both. This reading in both must be nuanced, as it is not a matter of reading everything in print and digital, regardless. Some interesting relationships are drawn. First, text size influences support preferences (Mollen, 2016). Texts large ones are preferably read in print; texts can be read in such a way that both in print and in digital.
The type of text is also relevant. More serious consumption texts (work and study, notably) tend to lead to print, from fun to digital. These first two factors, size and type of text, should be articulated with whether it is a full text or an excerpt (a chapter, for example, for Study): complete text points to printed matter. Crossing the three elements, an ideal type of text, which would tend to be consumed in print. At the other extreme, second type Ideal, we have a small text section and fun, which would tend to digital. The Crosses of these elements can give rise to a continuous range of possibilities. Access to text is also important. On the other hand, there are
I read the article Beginning to Read: Thinking and Learning About Print by Marilyn Jager Adams. I chose to read this article because it was the one that looked most appealing to me after viewing the titles of the other articles.
Throughout the article Carr establishes the mental process of what reading used to be, and now the modern technology reading. Before one is immersed in the tech world, reading books and newspapers was easy, flying through the books and need to run to the local library. Nowadays, teenagers, and adults all resorts to the Web. Whether it is a blog, social media post, or the online newspaper, many tend to read the bare minimum. Some may complain about the comment or caption is longer than a paragraph. Readers in today’s age
First, changing reading behavior is one of the negative effects that we have when we access information online. Reading articles on the Net is different from printed works. It may
Throughout the story Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, Holden Caufield consistently expresses opposition to school. No matter how many schools he attends, he always flunks out. Holden seems to express a lack of interest in most of the subjects that he is being forced to take. None of these classes had anything to do with what Holden wants to do with his life. Likewise, they do not teach him the important life skills he needs to live a long and happy life. However, there is another option: vocational schools. These are schools that allow students to pursue a hands-on career that does not require a traditional academic bachelor's degree. How would a vocational school and career have improved Holden’s
Each of the children did very well with identifying concepts of a book the first child that we will look at is 6 years old. She goes to kindergarten all day and has grown up with many books around. She was able to hold the book right side up for me, show me the front cover, and show me the back cover. She was also able to show me the title page of the book. Lastly she was able to show me the first page of the text. Although she did do a good job of pointing out some main parts of the book she did struggle with a couple others. She wasn’t able to turn some of the pages of the books she would skip three or four at a time. She also had a hard time pointing to the title of the book if it was not in the top of the cover. Lastly the child could
We have canceled with the SIMCO for the on-site calibration service. We are planning, test equipment will calibrate in San Jose, before us to ship to XPO to replace, with current expired one.
A person's strength was always his weakness. When it comes to reading and writing, I have many strengths and weaknesses. My past writing and reading experiences have made me into the writer/reader that I today. Strengths help me excel in my read/write, but the weaknesses do bring me in a stump at times. When writing an essay, you can have a very high vocabulary, but not have the best of grammar. The good thing about weaknesses is that they can be worked on to be made into a strength. Many people achieve this by setting goals and making the new one harder and harder. Without strengths or weaknesses or even goals, how would people learn from their mistakes, becoming better at what they're not or achieve their aims.
Imagine a day when youngsters would leave for school carrying nothing more than an electronic device weighing less than one pound. The advent and growing popularity of electronic textbooks may make this a reality sooner rather than later. No more students trudging around with 20 pound backpacks strapped to their backs. No more lockers jammed with textbooks and notebooks. The benefits of transitioning to e-textbooks are many and provide advantages for both students and educators.
Carr identifies how reading a book is different from reading online because when you read online, you don’t think deeply about what it is you’re reading, and you don’t have to concentrate nearly as much. Carr also mentions that the Internet is something people find themselves going to more often than books because it is more time efficient.
The acropolis is influential to archietcts and sculptors of today as they see Athens as a great wonder and sets high architecture standards for today. Although it was designed and built in the 5th century the level of craftmanship is exceptionaly high given the crude tools they would have had at the time. Sadly, the affect of the Parthenon and the rest of the acropolis is diminished due to the poor treatment of its sacred buildings. The temples have been ruined due to a mixture of reasons including wars, air pollution and neglect. Architects, sculptors, archaelologists and historians can go see the Elgin marbles if they’re interested. These are a collection of classical Greek marble structures taken from the Parthenon and resculpted by Phidias,
Teachers are always assigning homework in the textbook and of course every student complains. Not only because they have homework, but because they have to lug home multiple textbooks. Many school districts have been trying to find a way to solve this complaint. What school board officials have come up with is replacing the textbooks with notebook computers or tablets. It is the 21st century, there is technology booming everywhere. However, converting the notebook computers might not be the greatest decision.
“Ripe for digital destruction,” (A Textbook) were words of the late Steve Jobs referring to the enormous potential for the textbooks industry. He believed the textbook market to be worth an estimated 8 billion dollars in the U.S. alone. His vision was to lessen the burden of carrying heavy textbooks around, while also offering them as a free feature with the iPad. He wanted to change the culture of textbooks forever.
Now days with the rise of digital technology many physical items such as pen and paper are slowly being replaced by computers and smart phones. But is this really a good thing? I read books and of course so do many other people in this class and around the globe. But since the creation of ‘e-readers’ more and more people have been converting to the technology based side of reading. Although technology is slowly becoming more predominant in this era we should not rely on it to always entertain and keep us occupied.
In today’s world it is a requirement to be digitally literate in order to be able to function in a capacity that enables one to be more successful whether it is at home, school, at our jobs or even looking for a job. Over the last few decades our environment has evolved into a digital environment. Being or becoming digitally literate is essential in being successful in this digital environment. Almost everything we do today requires some sort of digital knowledge or literacy. From surfing the internet to searching for a job to being able to perform our jobs, we are required to have some sort of digital
How has writing and the way we read changed in the last fifty years? Technology, reading, and writing has changed greatly over the last five decades, but how much has it affected our culture? Technology has become our culture, we are cyber culture. We need everything as fast as we can get it, somehow we’ve lost the time through the years to read and write as we once did.
