In the novel, The Red Badge of Courage, by Stephen Crane, Henry Fleming possesses noticeable character traits. First, Henry Fleming exhibits that he is irritable. In addition to being irritable, Henry Fleming expresses selfishness. Finally, Henry Fleming displays cowardliness turned to courage. Throughout the novel, Henry Fleming proves himself to be irritable, selfish, and cowardly turned into courage.

First, Henry Fleming exhibits that he is irritable. Henry, at one point during the march, was about to raise an outcry of sense: The generals are stupid. The tattered man asks Henry various questions, and immediately, Henry becomes irritated and walks away. One of the other regiments was retreating, Henry, confused, asks why they are running away. As he perceived this fact it occurred to him that he had never wished to come to war. He had not enlisted of his free will. He had been dragged by the merciless government. And now they were taking him out to be slaughtered.” Later, Henry, after fleeing from the perilous battle, stated from afar that if the army he fought for lost, it would be beneficial for him. Self-absorbed Henry also perceived that he had been ill-used and was trodden beneath the feet of an iron injustice.
