The Pros And Cons Of Abortion

There are two main political parties you can choose from in the United States, The Democrats and the Republicans. There are also third parties you can choose from. People can choose to be part of any party. We are divided by the left and right side on the political spectrum. The right are more conservative and the left are more liberal. These two political parties show philosophical differences through their viewpoints on major topics. With so many differences between the parties, finding topics or issues upon which constituents agree on can be difficult.

The topic I chose to research was the funding of Planned Parenthood, and the services they provide. One of the positions on this topic was to defund Planned Parenthood. The article, by Sarah Torre, "Congress Should End Federal Funding to Planned Parenthood and Redirect It Toward Other Health Care Options" discusses the idea that PP should not receive any government funding to its clinics. A main argument established by Torre is that the flow of federal tax dollars could be redirected to other health providers that do not provide abortions. This quote, by Martin Luther King Jr, represents how Martin Luther King Jr really feels about abortions, and how abortions relate back to the idea of slavery. As abortions are spreading all across the world many people have wondered if there are any positives to abortions? If there are not any positives to abortion then people may wonder, what are the negatives to abortions, and how do other people feel about abortions.

In 1973, a settlement was made reserving the right of women to choose to have an abortion allowing health services like certain branches of Planned Parenthood to continue to administer them. The decision has been a reoccurring debate placing Planned Parenthood at the forefront of it thus threatening funding to the organization. As a result, the affordable and quality health care provided by Planned Parenthood has been clouded from the debate with the need to redirect attention in order to secure funding.

I hold the belief that a woman should have the right to have an abortion if that is what she would like. This means I identify as a pro-choice supporter. If the government ever decide to illegalize abortion, it would mean that women do not 'own' their body and instead the lawmakers do. As soon as a third party, such as lawmakers, are given the power to decide that abortions are wrong and they decide to ban abortions, women are no longer in control of their own bodies which makes them powerless.

Abortion is a subject that numerous people have strong opinions about; some believe that it is a form of murder and should be banned, yet others believe that the decision should be for the woman herself to make. In my eyes, the choice to abort or not abort is the woman’s, not the public’s. However, many men disagree with pro-choice.

Of course when making any decision it is important to critically think out the whole situation. It is very important to not make irrational decisions. In order to help make the best decision the pros and cons should be taken into consideration. The pros of having an abortion could be but not limited to, being unable to financially afford a child. There may be health risk for the woman so an abortion may save a life. Abortion is a word with unpleasant connotations, it’s a word mixed in controversy, whipping up passions and tempers, dipping into religions, politics and even personal ethics. In short it is a woman versus the rest of the world issue. Abortion is a religious issue because some faiths believe that life begins at the time of conception but when these religions foist their beliefs on the nation by making them laws this is a cause of great concern for those religions that are pro-choice. Judaism, for example, believe that life begins at birth. For them it is a violation of religious independence.

The debate on whether or not to make abortion legal has been an ongoing conflict since Roe v Wade. State restrictions could be applied in later trimesters. There are usually two sides in this debate. Those who believe in pro life and the others that believe in pro choice. Although another question arises, is there a blurred line between being pro life and being pro choice. Are you able to be both or is the line straight and clear. I myself would have to be in the percentage of people that stay in the blurred lines not teetering on both sides but proudly standing on both.

For the most part abortions take place in the first trimester, adoption is not always an alternative and in some cases of rape or incest an abortion is called for. This is why pro-choice should not be over turned despite what pro-lifers advocate.

Many will say that they are pro-life, while others would say they are pro-choice. When it comes down to abortion, there are many arguments and fights about which is right and which is wrong. There is no way to justify what is right and what is wrong because, abortion is neither right or wrong. There are so many factors into why someone would get an abortion. For instance, if they were raped and ended up pregnant, if they financially can’t support the child, or if they physically cannot have the child.
