How people learn is still a difficult thing to understand. Some people need visual instruction, some auditory, and some need to act out the information that is being taught. Many people have changed the way that students are being taught things, and now they’ve introduced technology into classrooms. More than anything, people question how much technology helps a student, as well as whether or not it actually hinders their learning. Both positive and negative effects have made themselves present, and both are continuing to grow in number. There are two main positive results of using technology for educational purposes. The first of these is an increase in grades and improved learning. Skill in learning has improved due to many reasons, including the fact that a student has greater access to the information that has been posted to the internet (Price). This allows for students to access any learning resources that are available online, and that were designed to help them. As O’Hara and Pritchard state, “[...]computer technology provides abundant opportunities for students to build or modify their personal knowledge through the rich experiences that technology affords.” Various studies have shown an improvement in various students’ grades and study habits. Observations have shown that students who use technology for education’s grades have increased, and that their understanding of the elements of language (O’Hara and Pritchard and Allen). In addition to grades, technology has heightened students’ self esteem. According to O’Hara and Pritchard, students who were observed using technology for educational purposes became more confident, worked better alone and with others, and had more motivation to continue onto college. The use of technology for educational purposes has overwhelmed the population with the positive feedback, and will continue to provide more as both technology and education improve, and learn to work together.

Throughout this course, a new perspective has provided us with the opportunity to take a look at many of the different ways in which the digital world has become one of the most dominant viewpoints of today’s generation, and how technology has taken over and welcomed itself into many aspects of our lives. This course paper will take a look at one topic of interest in particular, which in hopes will shed some light on a heavily discussed topic in the education world: does technology help or hinder the student. This paper will look to prove the point and discover more about the way in which technology has been incorporated into the classroom, both in an elementary context as well as a post-secondary context, and the effects that it has had on the student, the teacher, and the overall academic development that accompanies it.

Technology in the school has become an increasingly challenging and somewhat disruptive aspect in today’s educational system. In order to maintain what is considered the status quo, schools have focused their energy and resources on banning cell phones, wireless Internet and blocking social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter in schools. However, as technology continues to grow in our society outside of the school, many believe that effectively involving these technologies into the classroom can ultimately improve student engagement in their learning environments. This research paper will focus on both sides of the argument and ultimately seek to determine if there is a best practice regarding technological being put into schools.
Technology is all over our minds and concerns whether in regard to social impact, dependency or its use at educational institutions. It is currently the most debated issue in our modern society. Technology, it is believed, will become necessary for our survival in the future. It is the agent who will preserve the human race. The use of technology in classrooms is one example that the future will be better and students will turn out to be multi-dimensional in their thought processes and in the application of knowledge in future. Technology has truly taken over the classroom many schools now have SMART Boards, Chromebook laptops, iPads and Teacher Websites to refer to. As of July 2017, there are 57 percent of teachers who often use interactive whiteboards for instruction. Mrs. A said almost every classroom has a SMART Board and desktop computer for teachers. The school is still in the process of updating SMART Boards to make sure they are using the most current technology. Starting this year, every grade has a form a personal technology that they can keep until they graduate Elementary School. Kindergarten through third grade get to keep an iPad and the fourth and fifth-grade students get their own chrome book. What I found fascinating is that the students get to keep these chrome books or iPads in their desk and are held accountable for it. Once they graduate Elementary School they will most likely receive another Chrome book or iPad to keep throughout middle school. To accommodate students who do not have technology at home, some students are able to take these chrome books home and complete on academic work.
The value of online learning through out the years has been widely accepted by society and educators as a good learning tool. Technology is viewed as a great way to encourage in-class participation. This helps to motivate students to learn more about the subject that is being taught. It also helps with personal motivation to learn more. Technology also gives easy access to much needed resources for educational purposes and allows a more efficient communication between the pupil and the educator. Because of this information that is at the world’s fingertips, it allows for quick answers that would be otherwise hard to find. The demand for in-class technological use has negative affects too.

The educational system values the benefits of this convenient improvement, but some studies deny that fact. Societal benefits seem to outweigh the negative effects of technology; despite what is presented in media, these benefits could also hurt the child through a withdrawal of socialization and individual thought. Many scientists support their viewpoint through observations, yet remain biased on the conclusions they release to the public. This obtrusive inspection on the impact of technology changes the judgement that each person has. Although people who read these studies have a strong opinion, they do not particularly change their beliefs on the topic. Interpretation of the effects of technology on education remains diversified across the country, and those who use it stand firmly with their opinion.
The popularity of technology is growing larger and faster than ever. The problem is, we may never be able to catch up to it. The young adolescent adults seemed to be more interested in technology. Some experts claim that it does more harm than value. In terms of education, technology is becoming more and more popular and used among many school districts, although this can come with complications and allows students to ease threw assignments without having to fix their own problems. Also, technology can affect teenagers social abilities and let strangers have access to personal information.

Over the past few years, education has grown rapidly with the implementation of new technologies, but this growth has been witnessed in both positive and negative ways. When one uses the term ‘technology’, a good number of people automatically think of computers. However, the use of technology in the education sector depends on how new inventions are incorporated into institutions of higher learning. Students are no longer required to use their brains; instead they are taught how to memorize things using alternate sources such as: computers and calculators (Duderstadt et.al 09).
On any given day, teens in the United States spend about nine hours using technology, according to a recent report (Common Sense Media). This nine hours is more time than teenagers spend sleeping, completing homework, or interacting with family. In recent years, constant access to the internet and social networking sites has created an addiction- a reliance that today’s youth can’t navigate around. IPads and all of this new technology is being used more to play Flappy Bird than get any real schoolwork done. With new innovations in technology, schools have decided to incorporate devices like the Smartboard or IPad, but we do not know how to use them effectively to teach. Sure, these devices could be of some help, but the school board has not effectively taught teachers how to fully utilize the very equipment they are using to teach their students. Even with a firewall that can block certain websites and media, if a student really wants to slack off in the middle of class, they will find a way. However, if teachers were taught how to fully implement their devices in the classroom, students would not want to waste an entire class period playing Minecraft on the IPad or Apple computer. After all, most teachers will spend days trying to figure out the new systems that have been thrown in their face. Just think of the disastrous consequences and wasted money just to try to get a Smart Board to work. If we do not teach and properly implement better technology, we will continue to waste both students and teachers time, as shown by Four County Career Center and it 's use of the iPad and Smart Board.
