A shooting here; a shooting there; an every day occurrence heard in the newspapers and on the news channels on television. New media are reporting a shooting somewhere. Whether the shootings are accidental or intentional; they are happening across the United States. Nevertheless, in today’s society, gun violence is sparking debate and controversy on how to control gun violence. Throughout the country, thousands of laws and regulations have been created to aid in the control of guns. Through much study, the gun laws and regulations in place have very little effect on the number of gun related injuries and deaths. More needs to be done to establish an effective way to control gun violence.

Every day 297 people in America are shot in murders, assaults, suicides, unintentional shootings, and police intervention. Everyday 89 people die from gun violence, 31 of those people are murdered. Today I'm going to be talking about the social justice issue of gun violence. Gun violence, death and injury from firearms is a major issue in all parts of our world. Gun violence continues to affect young people, lower-income people, and communities of color. This social justice and public health issue occurs in places all over the world, however it has become such an epidemic in the United States that it will result in gun violence being one of the main topics in the 2016 presidential election. There are many causes for gun violence, for example, in this day and age pop culture influence is the greatest cause of gun violence. Guns have also became more accessible and easy to obtain. Poor identification and treatment of mentally ill people is another significant cause for gun violence.

Imagine heartbreak, loved ones dying, and losing hope. This has transpired for many in America today, all because of gun violence. It has become a great problem for our society in recent years. Data from Every Town Research has shown In their article Gun Violence by the Numbers “...that on an average day, 93 Americans are killed with guns...For every one person killed, two are injured” Many will deny that gun violence is a dilemma, but it is. Most do not realize this but, over 62% of the deaths that occur are suicides, and just over 1,642 people killed by gun violence were accidental. With the popular culture providing positive images of guns, the United States has a gun prevalence that is very rare in the modern world. While many people appreciate the “gun culture”, guns are heavily involved in violence in the United States. According to U.S. Department of Justice, since 1960, more than 750,000 Americans have died under firearms, including homicides, suicides, and unintentional injuries. The figure 1 provides a comprehensive survey of U.S. violent crimes for the period from 1993 to 2011.This figure illustrates that from 1993 to 2011, about 60% to 70% of homicides were associated with a firearm. Over the same period, between 6% and 9% of all nonfatal violence, with about 20% to 30% of robberies and 22% to 32% of aggravated assaults involving a firearm.

The United States contains 5% of the world’s population. However, our nation covers 35-50% of the world’s civilian-owned guns, is ranked first for firearms per capita, and holds the highest homicide rate among all other nations of wealth and democracy at 88.5% (Masters). Such high rates and loose restrictions are bound to lead to tragedy. We will not sit here and make excuses, we will not allow power in the hands of insanity, and we will not allow the safety of our children to be hindered. The United States is one of the few countries were the right to bear arms is protected by the constitution. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most violent with incidents involving guns this year reaching an estimated 36,212 and an approximate 9,050 deaths (“Gun Violence Archive”). There are an estimated 310 million firearms in households across American, these are only estimates because current gun laws do not require them to be registered or tracked. A more staggering estimate is that most of the guns owned by private citizens are semi-automatic guns, the same type of gun used in almost all mass shootings. While these privately owned guns are legally purchased, many times, they land in the hands of criminals, and owners never report them stolen. Mass shootings and gun crimes are not the only issues with gun violence the one never talked about is suicide, more guns available equals more suicides. The United States is one of the easiest countries to own a gun legally or illegally, stricter gun control laws are necessary.

Everyday 93 Americans are killed by guns. Whether it is due to homicide or suicide, it does not matter. At the end of the day gun violence is increasing exponentially. In numerous states, gun laws have been placed in the hopes of reducing gun violence. But now many people believe that gun violence should be treated as a public health problem. I for one feel that gun violence should be put in the category of public health. Every year more than 30,000 people are victims to gun related incidents. It has become such an issue that gun violence is causing more deaths than some life threatening diseases.

Guns have been is society for centuries. They have been used for hunting, war, and even safety. However, in the past several years they have begun to take the lives of many innocent victims, often young children. In response to the killings in Newtown, Conn., it has been noted, “If this were a country, the number of children killed by gun violence would violate international law.” (Browne-Marshall) F.B.I. data shows in 2011, 1,668 African American children were killed due to guns. Day by day gun violence is rising and it is not only in ghetto neighborhoods.

During the past years gun violence has seen an enormous increase in various parts of the world and majority of the cases been reported in the United States. The case includes victims such as children, senior citizens and young adults engaging in violence or getting caught in the crossfires. The life of common people is being affected, people are concerned as to how they can live safe lives when guns are being used in increasing numbers. On an average, every day you hear about some sort of gun violence affecting people either in your hometown or in another part of the world. Perhaps the main reason for such high gun violence is that guns are so plentiful in the Unites States. In fact, there are sixty five million handguns in America ("The `facts' about Guns"). These guns contribute to an annual medical cost of fourteen billion dollars, which is spent solely on treating gun victims ("Handguns in America"). Not surprisingly, handguns are the cause of eighty percent of homicides, seventy percent of suicides, and almost every accidental shooting ("Youth and Violence"). Former Governor of New York Eliot Spitzer once said "Yes, people pull the trigger - but guns are the instrument of death. Gun control is necessary, and delay means more death and horror". Spitzer’s words makes one think: should we fear the person behind the gun or the gun itself? The majority of violent crimes that happen in America are not only caused by a criminal, but also the weapon in which the criminal is holding. America’s gun violence problem stems from the increasing accessibility of firearms. Many of the mass shootings in America could have been prevented if access to semi-automatic and automatic weapons were completely banned. Gun violence is an arising issue, and a change needs to be made concerning the gun laws in the U.S. Stricter gun control laws is necessary to prevent high accessibility to firearms and mass shootings, also research shows that Australia’s strict gun control laws are proven to be more efficient in preventing gun violence.

This research paper’s purpose is to examine how the media is received, based on an audience analysis on the Orlando nightclub shooting in June 2016. His follows on from the findings of a content analysis on the same topic and used to understand how both the public and the media represent the shooter, Omar Mateen. An audience analysis is used to determine how the public and viewers responded to media content and is used to shape media content (Napoli, 2012, pp.79). A survey responded by peers was used to gather the results, which will be analysed and compared throughout this paper with the findings of the content analysis, and used to understand, not only the representation of Omar Mateen, but also the relationship between the public and the media.

Las Vegas (October 1, 2017), Pulse Nightclub (June 12, 2016), Virginia Tech (April 16, 2007), Sandy Hook Elementary (December 14, 2012), and Sutherland Springs Texas (November 5, 2017) are the top five deadliest shootings in United States history. I am 15 years old, and I have been alive for all of them. In these shootings alone, 192 souls were taken, but there are thousands of other deaths caused by firearms each year that aren’t placed on the global media. “According to the National Crime Victimization Survey, 467,321 people were victims of a crime committed with a firearm in 2011. During the same year, data collected by the FBI show that firearms were used in 68 percent of murders, 41 percent of robbery offenses and 21 percent of aggravated assaults nationwide.” (Office of Justice) How can we as a country, look at these numbers, and not ask ourselves, “What can we do to make things better, to stop all this violence?” I believe the answer to this question is stricter gun control laws. Stricter gun control laws are needed because firearms are used more for violence than self defense, laws have to change to adapt to the times, and stricter laws will assist in the movement to decrease gun violence in America.

First of all, one of the causes of the Orlando nightclub shooting was that the person who purchased the firearms could purchase arms as granted to U.S. citizens by the second amendment. The problem is not the second amendment. The problem is who is allowed to purchase certain firearms, because if someone thinks about it why would anyone need to purchase an assault rifle. There should be no reason why anyone would need to buy an assault rifle. Barack Obama stated, “This appears to be homegrown terrorism carried out by legally purchased firearms.” The weapons used in the attack were a SIG Sauer MCX semi-automatic rifle and a 9mm Glock 17 semi-automatic pistol. After the attack many influencers and famous people apart of the LGBT community protested for more gun control laws that would make the act of buying a gun more difficult, but was more of a safety precaution for those around the person who was purchasing the firearm. Many influencers from the LGBT community have created videos urging their audience to contact their senators and representatives to tell them to support gun control laws. During this time gun control laws were being voted on and the results were that the gun control laws were voted against between seven to nine times. The U. S. WAKE UP AMERICA! Gun violence is at its highest rate and mostly it’s from the US, where it is at an all-time high. Everywhere around the world, almost every day 93 people die from gun violence, out of that 32 are murdered in cold-blood. That means that every year, around 33,880 people die from gun violence, and it needs to cease. All you hear on the news in my state is “Man arrested in shooting death of Halifax County toddler”, “Family speaks out after Durham teen was fatally shot”, “Woman shot in a car during a dispute in Durham”, etc. It doesn’t only happen in my state, it happens all around the world. On Sunday, November 5th, 2017, it happened again, a mass shooting in good sweet ole’ America, the land of the free and the home of the brave. A shooter named Devin Patrick Kelley opened fire at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, reportedly killing 26 people, including a pregnant soon-to-be mother, and injuring 20. America’s gun problem is one of a kind, unlike any other developed country, and worse, all of it pertains to gun ownership and violence, and mass shootings are only a small factor in America’s gun problem as a whole. The most interesting fact about America’s gun problem is that it is unique. No other developed country in the world has anywhere near the same rate of gun violence as America. The US has nearly 4 times the gun homicide rate as Switzerland, more than seven times as Sweden, and nearly a whopping 22 times as Australia.
