The New American platform has mostly liberal views on domestic, economic and foreign policies. Therefore, it is forecasted to be most like Democratic parties versus the Republican parties. However, after we review and evaluate the three policies side by side, the final verdict will be made to which party is indeed more similar to the New American party.
The first policy being compared is our policies on healthcare, focusing on Medicaid in particular. The New American party expresses the same concerns about the issues of Medicaid as the Democratic party. In the democratic platform (2016), they state that they will fight for Medicaid expansion, “will oppose Republican plans to slash funding and block grant Medicaid…”, and “believe your zip code
In 1792, the world’s oldest political party, the Democratic Party, was founded. During the presidency of President Andrew Jackson in 1830, the party adopted its name as the Democratic Party as it is known now. Prior to the renaming of the party, it was known as the Democratic-Republican Party founded by James Madison, and Thomas Jefferson in opposition of the Federalist Party. The Democratic Party’s purposed served to supported states’ rights and the strict interpretation of the Constitution (Mayne, 1). Correspondingly, providing financial support to family based agriculture was one of their main priorities (Mayne, 1). The Federalist Party, their opposition, consisted of wealthy elites that strived, and fought for one strong all ruling national government, rather than state governments. As the United States had just recently become independent, the Democratic-Republican Party was determined to prevent the United States from becoming a monarchy. Over the next century, the Democratic-Republican party began to split due to the lack of agreement on major ideas which led to the current two-party system. However, some ideologies remain the same such as moral stance, and socioeconomic status. Other ideologies like economic view and stance on government power have caused this split between the Democratic and Republican parties (Mayne, 22). It is imperative to remember that even though these two parties are completely different, they originated from the same party with one main goal; “To create a government that is run for and by its people” (Mayne, 23). I have still not developed a political identity, but over the past three years of my residence in the United States, I am more in favor of the Democratic Party and what they stand for.
In his essay “Polarized Parties Are Good for America”, Matthew Yglesias asserts that the two-party system is ideal for America. He begins by stating that polarization is bad for elites, as it leaves little to no room for “self-styled players”. He then suggests that the two-party system is beneficial for voters, insisting that having clearly labeled candidates creates a “menu” that allows the masses to know what they’re voting for from the start. He concludes by stating that the problem isn’t in partisanship, but with the small number of parties. In this essay I will prove that the two-party system is bad for America.
For hundreds of years, the two party system has dominated the American culture, but many people are confused by what a two party system actually means. Although a two party system is defined as two parties that are bigger than the rest, third parties have greatly impacted elections for over a hundred years. Minor parties still continuously voice their opinions in issues, causing other candidates of either major party to adopt their philosophies. Furthermore, some parties, such as the Reform have actually been successful in obtaining a position, such as governor. Finally, third party candidates have actually taken away votes from a number of nominees over the years.
The 2016 Democratic Party Platform and the 2016 Republican Party Platform both shared a few similarities. The following similarities mostly have to do with the importance of continuing or obtaining a close connection among the Americas. They focused on emphasized mutual interest in strengthening alliances and improving economic growth. As well as an overall interest in mutually benefiting one another.
Democracy in the United States is based on the indirect representation of the people by elected officials who are usually chosen by direct vote. Almost from the beginning of the United States' history, however, two parties have shared the great majority of the elected positions from the local level to the presidency. However, up until the mid-1850's when the Republican party was formed, other parties such as the Whigs, Federalists, and Anti-Federalists did not last very long. The Democratic Party has existed for much longer, tracing its roots from Thomas Jefferson's Democratic Republican Party beginning around 1792 (Encarta). The two largest parties have changed, third parties have
Democrat and Republican Platforms share different yet similar views on government funded healthcare, Democrats are all for universal healthcare while the Republican Platform disagrees. Since the Democrats helped pass the Affordable Care Act (ACA), in 2010 commonly referred to as Obamacare, over 20 million American's gained healthcare coverage and was ensured that they wasn’t denied coverage for a pre-existing condition (Our platform, 2017, pg.31). Also, under the Affordable Care Act Americans could access public coverage through a public option, and those that are 55 years old could opt in to Medicare (Our Platform, 2017, para.2). Medicare and Medicaid were the two programs that were passed under the Affordable Care Act. Medicare covers
In the United States we are divided by the left and right side on the political spectrum; even further divided into political parties such as Republicans, on the right, and Democrats, on the left side. These two political parties show philosophical differences through their viewpoints on major topics such as the economy, separation of church and state, abortion, and gun control.
The Know Nothing group had gotten its name from when its members would deny their affiliation by saying “I know nothing”
The Constitution has nothing to say about political parties. Nowhere does it define political parties or explicitly specify that there should be two dominant parties. Nevertheless, America has had a strong two party system for last 150 years, a degree of party stability and endurance that can be found in no other nation (Landy and Milkis, 451). This system of two dominant parties has both its advantages and its drawbacks, the same as any system will. The two strong parties simplify and stabilize American politics from both the citizens’ and the politicians’ point of view and allow for government to be unified across the separation of powers built into the Constitution
For the 2010 Texas state political party platforms, do you support the Republican or Democratic platform on the issue of abortion? I support the republican platform on the issue of abortion. I consider myself conservative in nature and in most cases, abortion included. I lean towards their positions on these issues. Once a child is conceived, regardless of the circumstance, it is a life. As a society, Americans generally take life and human rights very seriously. Other countries that have mass murders and human rights violations are looked down upon but our citizens that identify with the Democratic Party and consider themselves liberal look past abortion as if it isn’t a life. The argument that it typically given is that it isn’t about the
Generally speaking, anyone who lives in the United States of America knows that there are two main political parties—the Republicans and the Democrats. Having two main parties has its advantages and, of course, its disadvantages. For example, in By the People James E. Monroe and Rogan Kersh (301) point out having this type of system creates “predictability and stability.” However, they also declare (301) it can “lead to a gridlock.” This is not a new concept either as there has been a divide since the beginning of both parties. The two parties more often than not disagree on various issues, while rarely agreeing on what is best for the country.
The Know-Nothing Party, also known as the American Party, was a secret party that was very well known and came from middle class and working class backgrounds. I was a political group from the United States between the years of 1840’s to the early 1850’s. This group was an anti-immigration group that also opposed followers of the Catholic church. Some of the members believed that the Catholics had intentions of taking over the United States. The intent of the group was to keep Catholics and immigrants from holding any political offices. They were also against them holding jobs, being business owners felt that you needed to be true Americans. In 1854, the group officially became the Know-Nothing Party and became very popular in the North because
Since the administration of George Washington two political parties have dominated the United States political system, but they have not always been the same two parties. The first two parties were the Federalists and Anti-Federalists. Federalists were those who supported a strong federal government and the Anti-Federalists were those who did not. The leaders of the Federalists were Alexander Hamilton and John Adams. Both were from the Northeast where the Federalist line of thinking was strongest. Thomas Jefferson became the leader of the Anti-Federalists. These two groups really did not considered themselves parties. The founders feared parties because they thought of them as factions.
When George Washington left office, he warned the nation about political parties fearing they were dangerous to the way government should function. Despite his warning, political parties developed and changed American politics forever. By definition, a political party is "a group of office holders, candidates, activists, and voters who identify with a group label and seek to elect to public office individuals who run under that label" (O'Connor and Sabato 437). The creation of political parties can be traced back to the differing views of Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton while they served in Washington's cabinet. Jefferson's Democratic-Republican counterpart today is the Democratic Party while Hamilton's Federalists are similar to
Political parties are critical structures in the modern society and universal phenomena in most democracies. In fact, they form major objects of intensive study as they are usually the centre of political and social power. They engage in most activities that are of significant consequence in the lives of citizens and link the common populace to the government. Therefore, it is important to understand political parties fully from every perspective of political systems so obtain their real importance in democracies. A political party is basically a group of citizens who converge as voters, activists, electoral candidates and office holders with a common party label and seek to elect party members into public offices. While modern political
