Part 1: Plot Summary
“The Monkey's Paw” by W. W. Jacobs is a story involving the supernatural and when messing with fate, can break apart a family. The story begins with Herbert, the whites son, and Mr. and Mrs. White sitting around the fireplace in their home. Sergeant- Major Morris, a friend of the whites, arrives and begins to talk about the past 20 years while he was in the military. Morris then tells the Whites about the monkey’s paw and its powers. Sergeant explains to them how the monkey’s paw has the power to give someone three wishes. Mr. White wants the paw, but Sergeant Morris tells him that it is cursed and that somebody will get hurt when the wishes are granted. Mr. White gets the paw and buys it to keep. Sergeant Morris

White and Herbert begin to wish for two hundred pounds to pay off their house, using the monkey’s paw. It’s the next morning and Herbert gets up and goes to work like normal, and then that afternoon a man shows up at the White's house. He knocks on the door and tells Mr. and Mrs. White that their son, Herbert, had been killed at work involving a machine. The man tells the White’s that the company wants to pay for the death of their son and the company is going to give the Whites 200 pounds, the exact amount Mr. White wished for the night before using the monkey’s paw. Several nights later Mrs. White gets the idea to use the other two wishes from the monkey’s paw to wish their son back to life. Mr. White does not like the idea of this plan because he could barely tell it was Herbert because the machinery messed him up so badly. Mr. White gives in, and wishes Herbert back to life. Nothing happens, so the Whites go back to bed, but then, someone begins to beat on their front door.
