"I have no spur / To prick the sides of my intent, but only / Vaulting ambition, which o'er leaps itself / And falls on th' other." Shakespeare 1.7. 25-28) The passage, The Monkey’s Paw, narrated by W.W. Jacobs, is about a monkey’s paw given to the White family by Sergeant Major Morris. As Mr. White wishes for two hundred pounds, the paw moves in his hand, but no money is found. The next day Herbert dies by getting caught in machinery and his work gives the White family two hundred pounds as compensation. They use another wish to bring him back to life, reviving Herbert but as a corpse. Then an evil entity tries to enter the house, rattling the door, then Mr. White uses his last wish to make it go away. Herbert is most responsible for the sorrows …show more content…
However, Sergeant-Major Morris states, “If you must wish,” he demanded, “Wish for something sensible.” Nevertheless, Herbert ignored the warning and encouraged his father to make a greedy wish for two hundred pounds, so you can beg to argue that the blame is on Herbert. Although Sergeant Major did give them the paw, it was clear that he had no part in them making a careless and greedy wish, but Herbert was because he kept telling his father to make the wish knowing they had more than enough money. This is why Sergeant-Major Morris is not the most responsible for the tragedy of the curse the monkey paw brought on to the White family. In the passage, Herbert repeatedly told his mother and father about wanting more money since his parents didn't know what to wish for. In the short story, The Monkey’s Paw, it states, “If you only cleared the house, you’d be quite happy, wouldn’t you” said Herbert, with his hand on his shoulder. ‘Well, wish for two hundred pounds then; that’ll just do it.” This provides support to my claim because it shows how Herbert was greedy over the paw and wished for money more than anything else even though they have everything they
In Louis N. Parker's story, The Monkey's Paw, Mr. White is to blame for Herbert's death because he is nonchalant, impulsive and greedy. First, because of Mr. White's nonchalant personality he does not take Sergent-Majoy Morris's multiple warnings about the paw seriously. For example, Sergeant-Major Morris tells the family about the consequences of the monkey's paw and Mr. White does not listen. The Sergeant says, "If you keep it, don't blame me, whatever happens [...] But I warn you! I warn you!" (Parker 125). Thus, despite that the Sergeant gravely emphasizes how dangerous the paw is, Mr. White ignores his words and decides to continue using the paw. This shows Mr. White's lack of concern which leads to his son's death. Next, other than being
Herbert convinces him to wish for 200 pounds, so he did just that. The next morning, however, the money was not seen in the house. Well, I don t see the money, and I bet I never shall. (Jacobs 36) Herbert remarked.
Although regretting wishing another wish, Mr. White wishes Herbert, his son, to be alive again. Unfortunately, Mr. White realizes that Herbert will return in his mutilated form, so he quickly wishes for Herbert to return to the grave before his wife is traumatized. As Mr. White and his wife look out at an empty street, awaiting Herbert’s arrival, they are heartbroken knowing that they will probably never see Herbert again. Unlike Mr. White’s first wish, Mr. Peters wishes for a wife as beautiful as the forest. However, Mr. Peters apprehends that Leita, his wife, will never be satisfied being a human, because she longs to be with her swan sister. So, for his second wish, he wishes her back to swan form. Now, without Leita Mr. Peters, as well as Mr. White, is heartbroken and a lonely man, once again. Now, understanding that wishes only lead to misfortune, he decides not to use the third wish.
Throughout this story I am going to be writing about who’s responsible for Herbert’s death. The person who’s responsible for Herbert’s death is Mr. white as you notice in the first paragraph. The reason being that its Mr. White fault is because he didn’t need anything but he still wished for 200 pounds. He should’ve wished for anything because he has everything he could possibly want and need. Even though Herbert wanted him to make the wish he still should’ve made it if he was warned about the paw.
This shows that Mr. White realizes that the paw is not to be used. But he is still forced to make the second wish because Mrs. White had gone crazy and forced him to. After he makes the second wish, nothing happens. Until, 10 days later, they hear a knock at the door getting louder and louder. Herbert is brought back to life.
White were sitting at home as their son Herbert is at his job. But then their day turns into tension as a mysterious man dressed in nice clothing visits them while their son is away. He goes on to tell them that Herbert has been in a terrible accident but he is not in any pain. The mother thought he was okay until she later realized that the man was telling her that Herbert had been killed by the machinery he was working with at his job. The company Herbert was working for gave his family some money in his honor...two hundred pounds.
To conclude, Herbert is to blame for his death. Another reason that Herbert remains responsible is because he was the first person in the White’s family to interact with the paw. In the text, it states “He took something out of his pocket and offered it”. Mrs. White drew back with a grimace, but her son, taking it, examined it curiously. ”(Jacobs 2)
Herbert’s own greed cost him his life. Herbert heavily influenced his father into wishing on the paw. “‘I don’t know what to wish for, and that’s a fact,’ [Mr. White] said slowly, ‘It seems to me I’ve got all I want’” (Jacobs 3). Herbert, however, interfered and convinced him that with the money he could do things that would make him happy.
In the back of his mind, he knew he wanted the paw and money that could come with it. Although the White’s had a great amount of money, they were still greedy enough to want the paw. An additional reason White is to blame for the events that have happened with the paw is that he's the one who made the wish for the two hundred pounds. In the story it states, “As I wished, it twisted in my hand like a snake” ( James 3 ). Herbert was the one who suggested the two hundred pounds, but White made the choice to make the wish.
“It seems to me I’ve got all I want.” “If you only cleared the house, you’d be quite happy, wouldn’t you!” said Herbert, with his hand on his shoulder. “Well, wish for two hundred pounds, then, that’ll just do it.”... ”I wish for two hundred pounds,” said the old man distinctly...
The story says, “‘If you only cleared the house, you’d be quite happy, wouldn’t you!” said Herbert, with his hand on his shoulder. ‘Well, wish for two hundred pounds, then; that’ll just do it.’” This explains how Herbert is greedy over the paw and wishes for money more than anything else even though they have everything they need. Herbert thinks that the consequences of the monkey’s paw won’t be as bad as he thinks it is going to be.
In “The Monkey's Paw” the main character is an old man, Mr. White, living in Laburnam Villa. Mr. White keeps the paw to see if it really grants him the three wishes, as it says on page eighty-nine, “If you don’t want it, Morris,” said the old man, “give it to me.” The soldier replied doggedly, “I won’t... I threw it on the fire.
The merchant the man's name.He said " It's Martin Jones ". Martin had a scruff beard and a heavy head head of hair. The merchant asked what did martin want. Martin said " you know what I want dammit the dam monkey's paw." "I don't have the paw" the merchant said nervously. Martin screamed at the man telling him I will kill you and pulls out a gun aims at the man's head and tells him again "Where is the monkey's paw you or you're a dead man. "Here" the merchant said handing the monkey's paw. His hand shaking. It is cursed the merchant said. Martin didn't care what the merchant said and ran out of the shop and hid in a nearby alley. He threw away the gun ran towards the airport to go back home in rural
In the text, it asserts “Well, wish for two hundred pounds, then; that’ll just do.” To further elucidate, Herbert felt that his father would be contented if the house was hollow and they would become affluent and eminent, in which he convinced his father in making
The person most responsible for Herbert’s death I believe is Mr. White. I think Mr. White is responsible because Sergeant-Major Morris warned him that there might be consequences if he wished for something but he still took the monkey’s paw. For example, Sergeant-Major Morris said this after Mr. White decided he wanted to keep it, ‘I threw it into the fire, if you keep it, don’t blame me for what happens” (Jacobs). This evidence shows that it is not the Sergeants fault because he clearly warned Mr. White that something terrible could happen. So if Mr. White hadn’t taken the monkey’s paw from the sergeant than his son wouldn’t have died.
