In the late 1800s to the early 1900s, Africa was plagued by imperialism. Imperialism was the state policy, practice, or advocacy of extending power and dominion through military force, or diplomatic talks. In Africa, countries such as Italy, Britain, France, Belgium, and Germany. Imperialism is considered negative due to the way the colonizing countries treated the natives of Africa. In 2009, director James Cameron produced Avatar, which portrayed imperialism in the worst way possible. In Avatar, the humans start mining for unobtanium, a valuable resource, but to find the unobtanium they destroy the lands. In Avatar, the imperialism portrayed includes the militaristic views, how the colonizing countries viewed the natives of the land, and how assimilation came into play. …show more content…

One of the main problems of imperialism was the militaristic views. The militaries were used as a way to force the natives to do the work. The colonizing countries would punish the natives of Congo, Africa by cutting off their right hands if they didn't mine enough rubber, a prevalent source of good at the time. Another major problem during imperialism was how we viewed the natives. In Africa, natives were thought of savages who don't meet what we think of as standards. We would often subject them to harsh punishments such as beating them. Assimilation played a big part in trying to help solve imperialism. While in Africa countries sent over missionaries, or people who travel to help certain problems. Even though we thought missionaries would help, sometimes they only made the problem worse. If the natives did not cooperate, then most of the time we would handle it using our militaries, or even killing
