Theme Of Imperialism In Avatar

In James Cameron's Avatar the idea of imperialism is displayed strongly through the measures that the humans take to overpower the land and the people of Pandora. Imperialism is when a group of people believe that they are superior,and see others as inferior. This leads to them thinking that they have the entitlement to take what they want. This is shown in the movie Avatar when the humans think that they are more superior and take away important landmarks to the Na'Vi people,Such as Home Tree.

The the idea of imperialism is shown, when the humans destroyed Home Tree, the living area of the Na’Vii. Home Tree is also sitting on a large mass of unobtainium, which is a grey rock that is found on the land of Pandora. On earth this rock sells for 20 million per kilogram and the humans are in desperate need for it. We can see this through dialogue and mise en scene. It is shown when Parker Selfridge (The head of administration for the RDA) explained to Grace (the head of the science for the RDA on Pandora). That the only reason her science is taking place is because the ‘little grey rock sells for 20 million per kilogram’. At this point in the film there is a close up shot of the unobtainium floating on a magnet, this makes it look highly important and of great value. James Cameron has used this film technique of lighting to illuminate the unobtainium. We can also see through character actions that some of the humans do not care about the Na'Vi.
