Favorite Visual Artist
One of my most favorite artists is the Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo. She was born Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderon in Coyoacan, Mexico, July 6, 1907 and died July 13, 1954. She was one of four daughters born to a Hungarian-Jewish father and a mother of Spanish and Mexican Indian descent. Frida Kahlo is the most famous Mexican woman artist on the contemporary art scene. In 1922, Kahlo hung out with a group of politically and intellectually like-minded students. The Mexican mural movement begins. Frida first learns of Diego Rivera, who is painting his mural "Creation" at the school 's lecture hall. Kahlo becoming a painter, was not a part of Frida 's career goals. Her goal in life was to become a doctor but a tragic accident at age 18 left her mentally and physically scared for life. It changed the course of her life forever. It was during her months of convalescence that Frida began to take painting seriously…"to combat the boredom and pain". she said. "I felt I still had enough energy to do something other than studying to become a doctor. Without giving it any particular thought, I started painting." It was the beginning of a life-long career for Frida. Aside from a few art classes in high school and browsing through art books from her father 's collection, Frida had no formal training in the arts. As Frida developed her artistic skills, her paintings evolved into her own unique style, heavily influenced by other people, artists, cultures

All Artist are influenced by their experience of the world, their personal and cultural beginings and stories. The history and life experience of an artist flows though their work influencing their symbols, style and meaning. Frida Khalo and Gordon Bennett are rich of example this, their art is filled with strong connection to their cultural and personal backgrounds. Khalo had a troubled life of pain and loss; the story is woven through her paintings, where Bennett art is a comment on Australian cultura and the story of his people, not just himself. The art working Diego and I (1946) and Self portrait -But I always wanted to be one of the good guys (1990) are great examples of these artist drawing on their pass.

Frida Kahlo, she never intended to become a painter. Kahlo was aspired to become a doctor as a young woman, but after a horrible accident at the age of 18, it left her mentally, as well as physically scared for life. This event had totally changed her life forever. The theme in almost all of Frida’s painting was her own life. Her paintings were based on events took place during her lifetime. As we can see in many of Frida’s paintings, especially in her self-portraits, it expresses her own personal emotions along with feelings about an event that happened in her life, such as her physical condition, her lack of ability to conceive children of her own, her ideology of life and nature, and most important of all, it was her unstable relationship with her husband Diego. Somewhere between the movement of surrealism, realism and symbolism in the art of Frida Kahlo, she was able to bring out tenderness, femininity, reality, cruelty and suffering within her paintings.

Frida Kahlo, was criticized by the world of art because she was a “rebellious loner,” (Bravo) as well as how she compared to women in general. In 1939, she painted an oil based canvas which was known as Las Dos Fridas in which she would expose her pain as well as incorporate the painful aspects of her life such as her health and love life. In the double self-portrait, she expressed her emotional status, anatomical and metaphorical aspects of the human body and how they represent her split identity (Herrera). The portrait consists of two identical Fridas sitting in a bench in front of a stormy sky.
In Frida Kahlo’s arts, Frida put all her emotional expression and her views on her life. She spoke to the world not by words, but by her distinguished paintings and hard times. Frida relieved her frustrations by drastically painting her honest expression while she struggled with her new illness. Each portrait expressed her anger, difficulties and personal ways. She painted her life as it really was not thinking how it looked to anyone else, but only the meaning and how it represented her as a person. Frida Kahlo recovered in a body cast where she spent most her time alone. She picked herself as the subject to paint because she knew herself the best. All of her drawings were her personal experiences from marriage, to miscarriages, to her every operation. Drawing herself while being mobilized created her creativity to symbolize her physical problems while relieving her emotions. Frida Kahlo’s poor health and chronic pain became prominent themes in her artwork. Frida portrays the effect of her body of the injuries she had sustained and conveys sharp images of the nature of her torment.
