Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderon also known as Frida Kahlo was born on July 6, 1907 in Coyocoan Mexico in her family home known as La Casa Azul (The Blue House) later referred to in many of her paintings. Her parents were Guillermo Kahlo and Matilde Calderon y Gonzalez. Frida was the middle child out of four children, once remarked that she grew up in a world surrounded by females (Kahlo Biography). Throughout most of her life, however, Frida remained close to her father.
At the age of six years old Freda contracted polio which cause her to be bed bound for various months and enabling her to participate in daily everyday activities. Her farther insisted she take on soccer, swimming, or even wrestle to help aid in her recovery (Ed.Biography).While she did recover from the illness, she had gained a limp when she walked in result of the disease damaging her right leg and foot. Frida then later attended renowned National Preparatory School in Mexico City in year of 1922. At the time there where only thirty-five female students enrolled in the school and she soon became famous for her outspokenness and bravery. During her time in the National Preparatory School she had meet her later soon to be husband Diego Rivera who was a Mexican muralist whose work she had admired for some time , seeking his advice about pursuing art as a career (Kahlo paintings). The same year, Frida joined an organization of students who shared similar political and intellectual views as she did.
