The Civil War was one of the most important and bloodiest wars in American history. It tore a nation apart and then brought it back together. An author, Michael Shaara wrote a book about the Battle of Gettysburg and how both sides, the Union and the Confederate, interpreted it. This novel was named The Killer Angels. After reading the book, visiting the Atlanta History Center allowed to learn and experience the life of soldiers during the War. The Civil War began on April 12th, 1861 and came to a much wanted end on May 9th, 1865. The southern people had been so reliant on slaves for all their work that losing them would destroy their economy. While on the other hand the Northern people hadn’t really needed the use of slaves because the women usually did all the work which is why they opposed slavery. In the Killer Angels, Chamberlain is divided, he believes that blacks should be free but when he walks up to an injured black man he sees animal like characteristics in him. In the end, 670,000 people from both sides were dead which means, 670,000 families were heart broken. Even though the Union lost a significant amount of people, the slaves were freed which was a reason why they fought. With this outcome the South lost billions of dollars that they had put into slaves. Because of this huge loss, the Southern government was significantly weakened. The North saw an opportunity to restore the union so they stepped in and began controlling the South. Shortly after the North began reconstruction which was their plan to bring the country back together. The cost of the Civil War was arguably worth it because the slaves were freed and the Union was restored. But, with all this fuss and trauma, what does this war mean for the future of
