The Killer Angels is a very interesting and intriguing novel about The Civil War and gives us day by day actions through out it all. That is what really interested me in the way this book was set up. Because of this, we get to see different views from different characters and how each one of them have their own stories in the war and how they got through the war. At the very beginning of the story, we meet a spy named Harrison, who loves his Shakespeare. He sees that the Union Army is coming, because he sees about twenty thousand men all at once. He is so scared and surprises and runs to tell the two generals, General Longstreet and General Lee. This is our introduction to the character I will talk about

The North and South both had opposite opinions about slavery, The South favored slavery because of there agricultural based economy which they needed slaves to attend to their harvests and crops, the North was against slavery because they were an industrialized nation they had no need for slavery. This debate went on and almost resulted
Wars have been fought for many different reasons through the years, and that holds true for the American Civil War (1861-1865). As in any conflict, there are two sides to the story. The Union and the Confederacy each had their own views as to why they were fighting the war. Victors write the history so too often only the Union side is

Both sides, the union and confederacy, had different opinions as to what honor for their country. The Union believed that should if they should fail in the fight for preservation of the union all that the original founders fought for would be lost. The Confederacy believed possessions, such as slaves, were part of the right to freedom. This is the main reason North wanted to separate from the confederacy. The division between the North and South were very apparent. The South was primarily fighting for “property and homes” (McPherson 117). On the other hand, the North was fighting for freedom of all men and unification.
After the four year war the death toll was over 600,000 Union and Southern men. The war fought mostly in the south and left it in ruins. The Killer Angels tells the story of the Battle of Gettysburg.
Throughout the novel, Killer Angels, Michael Shaara does a terrific job presenting Joshua Chamberlain of the 20th Maine Regiment as a person of mighty innovative leadership. On day one of the battle, Joshua Chamberlain is told by his good friend Buster Kilrain that their regiment will be receiving one hundred and twenty mutineers from the old Second Maine Regiment. Joshua is also authorized the right to shoot any man who refuses to fight. At first Chamberlain was a bit skeptical of what he was going to say to the men, but being a professor rhetoric at Bowdoin College, a prestigious school, he knew what had to be done.
The memory of the Civil War is vital for history and needs to be taught and preserved, so that the current and future citizens of the world can learn from others’ mistakes and take time to remember the lives that were lost.

The Civil War was a four year armed conflict between northern and southern sections of the United States. The Civil War cost more American lives than any other war in history. There were bout 3 million people who fought in the beginning of the Civil War and about 600,000 people’s lives were lost at the end of the war. What began for many as a romantic adventure soon became a heartbreaking bitter struggle between the two parts of a divided country. This, however, was more than the industrial North fighting against the agricultural South. There were divided families with brother fighting brother. Some Northerners joined the Southern ranks and some Southerners were in the Union
The Southerners white opposed to the confederacy at first there was some then a lot more, bringing it down. When Lincoln was elected president the white Southerners knew that he was against slavery. They felt that Lincoln should not take away their rights to have slavery they were completely opposed to it. The slavery was made up of both rich white and poor white that were worked as Negroes. They felt that the Republicans were going to eliminate slavery in Washington,
The book, Why We Fought - Battle of the Civil War, by Gail Fay was a very well written book that was also very well organized. The author’s purpose was to inform the reader on all the battle of the Civil War and how it impacted the end of the war and the future of the United States. The author did this through questions and then in the following paragraphs and subtitles he explain the question. The format was a Question and Answer which could be beneficial to the reader because it allowed them to get answers to common questions in a descriptive way. This book also had a glossary which helped the reader understand important historic vocabulary. The overall purpose of the text was to educate the reader about the important battles of the Civil
The North’s actions of abolishing slavery and enacting tariffs caused the South to fight in hopes of preserving their way of life and economy. Plantations in the South were only successful because of slavery. Without the slaves helping them create the abundance of cotton, the South would have no economy. The country’s economy would be greatly altered if slavery was eliminated both from a consumer and producer perspective. When the North did announce that they wanted to completely eradicate slavery, the South was taken aback due to the fact that the whole country would not function without slavery and the cotton produced. The North wanted the South to industrialize but the South replied “… we must ever continue to be, wholly dependent upon agriculture and commerce (South Caroline Protest Against the Tariff of 1828).” The climate in the South did not allow for the same industrialization to occur as it did in the North. Plantations and their productions of cash crops were booming in the South and the northern frontier was too small of a market, therefore leading them to sell to foreign countries. This caused the North to enact tariffs and in order to prevent the South from being too successful and lose them as a market. The North ended up petrifying the Southerners into fighting a war in order to preserve their way of life and thriving economy.
