Many students in America, might consider school almost like a home because they spend about half a day in. We need students to be safe at school, so why not have an officer patrolling the hallways. To make the school much safer, the officers should have guns in case there is a threat towards the students. In the eyes of many United State citizens a gun can symbolize death; however, a gun can save several people’s lives. As U.S citizens, we have the right to keep and bear arms, so why do we not have police officers with guns patrolling schools. “Gun violence is a major social issue in America and American schools and university campuses have become targets of gun violence” (Bond). In the U.S we had several severe situations when someone comes to the school and starts to kill not only students, but teachers and staff, this could have been prevented if we were prepared and secured. Although the opposition may suggest it could be more dangerous to have an officer or guard be allowed with a gun; however, having an officer with a gun would decrease the number of shootings and other minor problems at schools. Several people think having an officer with a gun will lead to negative consequences such as student having easy access to the guns. It is true that students will be closer to a gun, but this is an officer that has been trained and it is not easy as it seems to remove a gun from an officer. According to College Quest, “The training program generally lasts around 12 to 14
The two articles that I have read were “Connecticut School Shooting ‘An Attack on America’” by Ted Anthony and “The Price of Gun Control by Dan Baum. All around I believe these articles were both very interesting and both took different perspectives on the issues of guns in America. Both Anthony and Baum illustrated the different problems that we have in America and our communities with gun control and gun violence. But, they both brought the text together to relate it on a personal level. I enjoyed reading both texts and connecting to each one on a different level.
The United States is home to approximately 5% of the world’s population and 31% of all mass shootings. Through these mass shootings and various other methods of gun violence, tens of thousands of people die every year. These gun-related deaths primarily originate from murder and children accidentally shooting themselves. Although those in favor of gun control tend to believe that guns should be terminated completely, the second amendment prevents lawmakers from being able to do so. Therefore, in order to combat these causes, alternative gun control solutions must be made for each one. Gun-related murders can be decreased through the use of universal background checks. Additionally, accidental shootings can be minimized through the
The big question in a lot of schools today do to several shootings and terrible incidents is whether or not a teacher should be able to be armed with a gun in case a situation of self-defense. It is a concern from regular citizens to teachers and all the way up to the government itself. Realistically, there would be a lot of problems trying to implement guns in the first place but seems reasonable in some ways as well. Teachers having or not having firearms will probably be decided soon enough, but is looking like they won’t have any in the near future. There are several reasons why a teacher should be armed in a school building.
Tragic school shootings have contributed to the topic of teachers carrying concealed weapons. School is suppose to be a safe place for students to learn. Recent talks have suggested that teachers act as frontline defenders. This opinion has brought about debate of whether educators should carry concealed weapons. This paper will argue against the proposition of placing teachers in the role of frontline defenders by establishing the position that students do not support the idea, teachers are not in favor of carrying concealed weapons and the potential for health issues associated with teachers carrying concealed weapons.
“It is something we have to prepare for. As much as we might like to think that will never happen here, it is the kind of attitude that gets people hurt.” Sgt, George Vinson made this statement after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting of 2012. Schools shootings can happen any time, anywhere so we have to be prepared for the worst, instead of acting like it can never happen in our school districts. Many states have already passed laws allowing teachers to carry guns, not in fear that a shooting will occur, but being prepared for the worst to occur (Murphy). Although school shootings do not happen often, teachers armed with guns can make students feel safer during school hours, prevent acts of violence that occur near or at school, and the teacher's right to bear arms to protect themselves and others.
2. My topic is socially significant because many people every day die from the result of gun violence. I wanted to search if there was any way we could improve our gun regulations, and thus reduce how many people die from the gun violence.
Guns have been is society for centuries. They have been used for hunting, war, and even safety. However, in the past several years they have begun to take the lives of many innocent victims, often young children. In response to the killings in Newtown, Conn., it has been noted, “If this were a country, the number of children killed by gun violence would violate international law.” (Browne-Marshall) F.B.I. data shows in 2011, 1,668 African American children were killed due to guns. Day by day gun violence is rising and it is not only in ghetto neighborhoods.
Few topics can generate more of a divided opinion than gun control. In reviewing the following case study, “Case 8.4: Have Gun, Will Travel…to Work”, several important questions will be discussed involving moral and legal rights of both the employee and the employer. This case involves the dilemma of a company’s rights to protect its employee’s verses an individual’s right to bear arms. In 2002 several employees were terminated for violating company policy by keeping guns in their vehicles while at work. Although at the time there was no state or federal law prohibiting the company from dismissing an employee for having a gun in their vehicle, this action by Weyerhaeuser, a Seattle-based timber-producing company set in motion a legal
Can we trust armed public school staff with our kids? Can the school authorities regulate their actions? These are new questions parents ask those who are in support of arming public school officials and faculty. Allowing teachers carry concealed weapons to those who support means better protection of the children in time on trouble. To the people who oppose, it is simply bringing the trouble closer to the kids.
This database indicates the mass shootings as incidents of 3 or more shooting victims, not gang or drug related and appears to be indiscriminate. It includes the numbers of people injured or killed in mass shootings from 2000 to 2015. 80% of gun deaths occurred in young men and 10% in young women. Young men were ten times more likely to be killed by guns than young women, but older teenagers are at the most risk. If gun control was legal, it would decrease the amount of fatalities and injuries. The main purpose of this database is inform readers by looking at the numbers to really see our country’s issue with gun violence. There are no proofs stating this database is pleasant. They all state the toll of fatalities and injuries. The date of
Gun Violence is found not only in our country, but around the world. Mental illness is a great connection to this very horrible topic we find . Knowing and understanding the importance of gun violence can help to save a life and also influence our generation to come. Knowing the correct information because of laws and rights should influence consequences that can be avoided more easily.
Imagine living in a carefree world, it’s impossible but with the criminal justice system enacting laws to forbid illegal activity, crime has lessened nationwide. Several categories of crime such as guns, drugs, and organized crimes spark major concern. Crime has existed since human conscience was active. Gun violence is the illegal use of a firearm. Drug crimes are executed by one whom obtains, produces, and allots illegal substances. Organized crimes have several components, one that involves firearms, drugs, and the exchange of human beings for self-gain. This professional crime threatens the tranquility within our society, defies our rights as a human, and weakens all social and economic classes nationwide. Thanks to state-established programs, an extensive amount of crimes, globally, are eliminated, resulting in fewer criminals among the community. Numerous policies were formed to prevent the distribution of firearms and criminal gun crimes such as homicide. The Organized Crime Convention provides states a certain plan to battle organized crime. Crime has marked our history, and unfortunately, it will continue in the future. The criminal justice system is society’s response towards any violation of cultural norms. Advanced forensic procedures, together with the amount of news given by the public allows an offender to be tracked down. New and improved forensic technology aids scientists and investigators to conclude their ongoing criminal investigation. The criminal
Recently, the SAFE Act, or Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act, has sparked a large debate amongst New York residents. The law, passed January 15th, 2013, created many new restrictions for gun owners and those looking to purchase guns. Perhaps the most controversial part of the ordeal was the hasty enactment of the law. Many dispute that it is an infringement on their constitutional rights. In addition, the State doesn 't have the means to enact many parts of the law. The law assumes that restricting the physical guns will solve the issue of gun violence; however, the real issue is mental health, or rather the lack of sufficient mental health care in New York State. The SAFE Act will do little to prevent further gun violence, instead it will restrict law abiding citizens from obtaining firearms for hunting or sport, and it continues to enrage many who feel it 's a violation of their rights.
The gun laws in California are for the most part the strictest in the United States. In order to purchase a gun legally, one must obtain a firearm safety certificate by passing a written test. There is a 10-day waiting period as well as several limitations on who may own a firearm. Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton are two democratic candidates who recently had a presidential debate in Flint Michigan for the 2016 election. The purpose of this essay is to compare both candidates’ standpoint on the subject of gun control and determine which candidate has the best policy.
You go to school to be educated by your teachers and peers. It brings unnecessary tensions and can cause problems. Students, teachers, and other staffs shouldn’t be able to bring guns to school. Who’s to say that person carrying around an assault weapon doesn’t have an unstable problem? We don’t know what is on someone’s mind or what they are capable of. Anyone could be having a bad day and decide to threaten someone with a gun. These kinds of circumstances should be made clear to the public and be banned from educational schools. Guns are used as protection, but they may be misapplied to be used as violence. There are more rational ways we could go about this such as; investing in more security guards or police enforcement. Needless to say, guns are dangerous especially when in the hands of a deadly person. What's more important, the second amendment or the lives of our teachers and students? Ultimately guns have no place to be in or around a school
