Gun Violence And Gun Control

Decent Essays

1. The topic I chose to study was gun regulations. 2. My topic is socially significant because many people every day die from the result of gun violence. I wanted to search if there was any way we could improve our gun regulations, and thus reduce how many people die from the gun violence. 3. The most surprising thing I learned doing my research was how oppose the NRA (National Rifle Association) is to any change in gun regulations. They are the main reason many new gun regulation rules are never passed. I also learned how easy it is doing research. 4. If I was to write a research paper on this topic, my thesis would be gun laws are the cause of much violent crime in America and need to be changed so that it is more difficult to obtain guns thus reducing gun violence. I like this scholarly article because it examples why people have guns. The first reason is for recreational purposes which include hunting, collecting and sporting. They are most likely to be white, male, middle-class and Republican. They are also likely to be from the South, and have the belief that it is their right to own a gun. The second reason people have guns is for defense. They fear crime, or they have been a victim of crime. Some think the reason for many people having guns in the South has to do with their higher crime rate. Personally, I don’t understand why people would have them for recreational purposes. There is nothing manly or fun about a man hiding in a tree and shooting a defenseless animal who is just minding their own business. I understand the having them for defends. We need to be able to protect ourselves. This article was overall a great read. "Gun Control." Gale Encyclopedia of American Law, edited by Donna Batten, 3rd ed., vol. 5, Gale, 2010, pp. 175-180.
