The way PACs work, is they receive donations from individuals or companies. After receiving donations, these political action committees can donate to candidates if it is a traditional PAC. However, if it is a Super PAC, the organization can receive as much money as a donor is willing to give but cannot give directly to a candidate. Super PACs can receive money from anywhere, including foreign governments, companies, and private individuals. The Super PACS must spend the donations on individual funds, such as commercials, flyers, and phone calls, without the influence of the candidates. As money flows in from donators, the politicians pass legislation to achieve what businesses and individuals want. Figure 1 above helps clarify the influence
America has been a nation the allows every citizen over the age of 18 an opportunity to vote for whoever they wish to represent them in numerous political matters from county
In other words, Super PACs gives a voice to people with money. All corporations that have money to give, are giving millions and millions of dollars to the candidates across the board. Independent voters don't have that money to donate, so their
The American political system is built on simple but revolutionary principles from our founding Fathers. These principles state that self-governance is an absolute right and the governments purpose is to serve the interests of the people. Characteristics which are essential to a healthy, functioning democracy. But America has stumbled upon a formidable roadblock to the realization of our founding fathers dream, as Lincoln said, of a country that is "of the people, by the people and for the people"( Citizens at Work, 2003). There are many factors that distort this reality and the main
For example, some cons that are associated with the Super PACS are the abuse of power and abuse of integrity. The Authors, Ginsberg and et all mention this use of the PAC as a form of bribery. On page 262, the text reads “such support can easily the cross the threshold into outright bribery.” The speculation of this con support the abuse of power these super PACS might enforce upon its supporters in plain and blind sight. The outlawing of this tactic could benefit people against groups with vindictive interest. The people expect the United States government, specifically the law, to protect them, but this tactic is loop hole that prevents the latter. They are receiving currency legally as donations, again for “the elections not the elected”. If these people are donating their money for a cause they deem justified and favorable, what is the benefit? The question is subjective to the follower, and to the person that sees this as way of abusing the power of the government to extract funds of people from a higher socioeconomic status. In this situation, the groups that make use of the super PAC tactic would essentially be labeling people as ATMs. If the government were to outlaw this tactic, the people would be better protected.
or candidate? Today’s politics is being shaped by Super PACS and Interest groups, and we see this all the time in the elections happening. A Super PAC is a political committee that is organized to raise money to support their candidate so they can pull ahead in the polls, and spend money to oppose the other candidates. An interest group supports a certain side on a topic and a candidate for a position in government would find it beneficial to appeal to interest groups in order to gain supporters. Interest groups and Super PACs has changed the way we elect someone for their desired position. Some examples of interest groups are GLAAD, NRA, and PETA.These different Interest groups have nothing in common, besides the fact that everyone wants their support. A candidate can find good in appealing to certain topics to influence interest group help. The support given would definitely boost the votes and donations the candidate gets in order to ensure his win. It seems that a candidate can benefit from Interest groups just because of who the candidates know. This is seen as unfair or wrong, which I can personally see, but it does have its advantages. A couple examples of Super PACs are Commonsense Ten PAC, Patriot Majority, and Citizens for a Working America PAC. Politics is influenced by these PACs, which are either liberal or conservative, finding ways to raise money for a better chance to win. It is
The government of the United States is one of the most effective and thoroughly formed governments in the world today. There is no doubt that it has its advantages and provides helpful balance in ultimate power. However, our system is not without its flaws. In fact, many things keep the U.S. from operating as smoothly as it could potentially operate if it weren't bogged down by selfish interests. All of our problems in government stem from personal sin and lust for power and prestige. One prime example of this is the role money plays in influencing American politics. Money can be used to bribe, manipulate, cheat, deceive, and do all kinds of damage to our system of government. We do not need to look far to see how people will bend over backwards
The political parties and super pacs are legally allowed to raise virtually unlimited amounts of money to throw at their chosen candidates’ campaigns and, money from foreign investors makes its way into the election through super pacs and through legal residents who cannot legally vote. Also candidates reporting of their campaign spending need to be more concise and transparent.
illegal, with 52% of the participants feeling strongly about the issue (Cillizza & Blake, 2012). A
The so called super PACs have not been in existence for very long since America has remained used to the PACs. The electoral system has been used to the PACs that are political committees with the ability to raise up to $5000 in order to support particular candidates or issues. The super PACs on the other hand may raise unlimited amount from the donors who can remain anonymous if they choose to. The Super PACs are not allowed to donate directly to the individual campaigns or the candidates or the political parties. The super PACs may use as much money as they may collect to promote what they support or to attack what they oppose. The American political landscape saw the super PACS come into being in 2010 after the Supreme Court’s January 2010
There is a distinct influence on how special interest groups impact law maker’s actions. When making campaign contributions, special interest groups gain the support of candidates to support their causes if they win the election. Candidates promise to support political action committees (PACs) when they are in office and these PACs help them determine what the important issues are at election time. Special interest groups usually contribute to those who have helped them before and those who serve on committees or subcommittees that routinely consider legislation of concern to that group.
As said by Joe Garecht, PAC that is an acronym for Political Action Committee, is an “organization that is formed to raise and spend money to support certain candidates, ballot propositions and issue campaigns (Garecht).” Meaning that it focuses on supporting nominees that take a certain stand on one or more issues or certain industries/areas. PACs are formed on an ideology that are either state-based or federal-based. With this government action can make a difference between profit and loss for a business. PACs are generally formed by organizations or individuals and channel the voluntary contributions they raise to candidates for elective offices, primarily in the US House of Representatives and the US Senate. The formation of PAC forms contributions
-Political Action Committee also referred to as PAC is a committee, which is a group of organized people whose main focus is to raise and spend money to elect and vanquish political candidates. PAC is supported by groups like business that share the same ideologies. The political organizations are customarily political parties, candidates, committees or associations.
The political action committees (PAC) are interest groups that accumulate contributions and construct ways to raise money from individuals and/or businesses. Once the PAC has the funds, they must determine what candidates will receive the contributions, the percentage, and establish when it will be most beneficial to the candidates. The political candidate that appears to be more in favor with current politicians, committees, policies, and often with the public are more likely to receive the larger percentage of the contributions. The candidates’ popularity should increase once they have been endorsed with the financial backing.
I choose the term/concept “astroturfing” for my RML assignment this week. I found an interesting article on the Washington Post. The article is titled, “The three types of political astroturfing you’ll see in 2016”, and was written by Caitlin Dewey. It was published on September 26th, 2016.
“Most PACs represent business, labor or ideological interests. PACs can give $5,000 to a candidate committee per election (primary, general or special). They can also give up to $15,000 annually to any national party committee, and $5,000 annually to any other PAC. PACs may receive up to $5,000 from any one individual, PAC or party committee per calendar year.” (Opensecrets) Super PACS are allowed to give as much and receive as much they want as long as they don’t directly coordinate with the candidates who they give to. With that said I feel they both play a role that’s not really in light and is helping on the side with additional funds and support coming in. PACS can also hurt campaigners they don’t approve of with various media sources like “running ads or sending mail or communicating in other ways with messages that specifically advocate the election or defeat of a specific candidate.” (Opensecrets) Over all I feel the pacs are just another group try to get what they want out of the government and are just people looking out for their own interests so I don’t they really help or hurt democracy and the process as a whole but more or less are trying to help
