Having been a chubby kid, I was always a bit intimidated by the realm of sports. Soccer balls led to sprained ankles and footballs caused concussions - all for what? When my friend asked me to come with her to the varsity lacrosse tryouts in freshman year, I agreed just for the sake of giving her company. Yet after picking up the basics and running a quick mile, I found myself on the field with a dozen other kids - somehow I had made the team! That cold February, I learned how to pass and shoot, practicing the motions until I was comfortable with them. On team runs by the Hudson River, I watched as my ball bounced out of my stick and into the water. Lugging my equipment between home and school every day, I fell asleep on the subway, resting my head in the net of my stick. Though I was exhausted, somehow lacrosse had given me something to fight for. …show more content…
Though along with the rest of the newbies, I spent much of my freshman year on the sidelines, I cheered wildly for my teammates, supporting them all the way. With a lacrosse stick in my hand, I felt lucky to be part of something bigger.
Throughout the years, I have practiced my stickwork, improved my mile time, and secured my spot in the starting lineup. As a senior, I play alongside several of the novices with whom I used to share a bench. Hearing the freshmen spur us on, I am reminded of myself. With the team that became my second family and the sport that became my passion, I have learned that you have to take chances sometimes. Lacrosse taught me the true value of hard work and
I’m a jr lacrosse player and I’m also able to play up as a sr lacrosse player. Since I’m a sr and jr, I was in South Windsor for 8-9 hours playing for only 200 minutes in total. All of the games that my team and I played were only 25-30 minute games but since I was there all day, it felt like I was there for EVER! The fun thing was I got to hang out with my lacrosse team for the whole day and won together and lost together as a team. Not one of us wasn’t able to score at least one goal during the sr games because they were easy to get by but not so easy to stop. The easiest teams that we were easy to beat by 10 points was Ellington. All of the players on every team played dirty, and were TALL! I felt like a little 2 year old playing against them! On one of the teams they had a 9th grader that wasn’t allowed to be on the team and when the coach on my team found out, they had to forfeit the game, so we won
When I went to practice at the first time, I was really nervous. But when we introduce each other, I got to know them and started to make friends with them. they are like my family where we look after each other. like what coach said, " If a lacrosse player sees a lacrosse player walking while they're driving, they'll pick that player up." And I kept that in my head.
The boys walk onto the field like a group of soldiers. The dark rubbery turf causes the Irondale Boys lacrosse team to stand out in their satin maroon and gold jerseys. Nothing could break their concentration. Their brows furrowed with anticipation for what awaits them. Within minutes the boys will be battling the other team to take home the bragging rights that go with winning. Although lacrosse does not rank highly in popularity, it is one of the greatest sports. The lacrosse boys confirmed that watching the game does not compare to the thrill of actually partaking in a game. Lacrosse is one of the more underrated sports, but it should not be.
While other students were out celebrating the first week of summer, the New Albany Girls Lacrosse team was practicing for one of the biggest moments in their lives. They were preparing to compete in the Division II Lacrosse State Championship Game on June 1st. The team had one week to ensure they knew their plays, calls and were general ready for one of the toughest games of the year. Among this team there were twenty-five girls, and within this group of girls there were only two goalies. These two goalies, Kathleen Schell and Grace Anthony, had to hold the team together. Kathleen was talking to Grace before the end of practice and told her “I am really nervous, because I don’t know who coach is going to throw out there first. Also, what if
We have spent countless hours together driving all over the north-east to practices, games, and tournaments. Pursuing my passion has forced me to be creative and make some challenging decisions. At the start of ninth grade, my former school, Collegiate, announced it was dropping its lacrosse program. While my family and I fought hard to convince them to keep the team, we ended up needing to seek out an alternative solution. I contacted most of the coaches and athletic directors at New York City private schools acting if I could practice with their squad.
I believe joining my high school lacrosse team was an influential part of my high school career. Having social anxiety, it was not always easy for me to be around others kids. Joining the team thought me to face my fears and that sometimes it is better to stop thinking and just take that “leap” into whatever you're afraid of. Secondly I learned to push through challenging times even when I wanted to quit. Lacrosse also allowed me to meet people who I would come to look up to, and cause me to want to improve myself for the better.
Over the years I have worked diligently for countless hours to become the best lacrosse player that I can possibly be. In turn this has provided me with the opportunity to be a student of Duke University which is a incredible honor. However, now that I have the opportunity to go to Duke and play the game I love I want to have the opportunity to better myself as a person off the field and put a positive effect on others around me. To have the chance to be able to learn from some of the best if not the best collegiate staff is unimaginable to most. I plan to take full advantage of the knowledge and wisdom that the Duke coaches as well as Professors and even Alumni have to offer. I know that In the end, I will come out with a degree, and
A memory that is etched into my brain is when I was asked to come back and be on a national lacrosse team. This summer I went to try out for a national lacrosse team down in Ocean City. The team’s was named, “ Diamond National” and they were a pretty good national team. This is the first time I tried out for a national team and I thought I didn’t do my best at the tryouts. Even though I didn’t do my best I was still asked to come back.
Around March last year, lacrosse season was beginning to come around the corner. Everyone was getting prepared for the season with high expectations of winning another championship. For the returning seniors this was a huge deal for them, along with the rest of the team. Everything was in good shape until events unfolded and my spot on the team was a swinging player.
You recently asked to be allowed to play lacrosse. I have reached a decision on your request, and I would like you to understand the reasons for this decision. I have decided that this sport will be a positive experience, having positive long-term effects on your growth, development, and education. I believe you will be very pleased with my decision, but it’s very important for you understand why I’m letting you play lacrosse.
Having played the sport of Lacrosse for the previous 4 years, now going on my fifth i can definitely say that at the beginning I had a big problem. I wasn’t as good as the skilled players, but I also wasn’t much of a competitor. I first started playing in my first year of eighth grade but i never found any success so i took a year off. During that small time off I missed something. I missed being on the bench, And
Lacrosse is the fasting growing youth sport in the world. The game has been played since the early 1600s by Native American tribes. Lacrosse is described by players as a game that combines the player movement and passing of basketball with the stick skills, shooting, and hitting of hockey to create a high scoring, action-packed game we know as lacrosse. So you’re probably asking “how can I play lacrosse”, well lacrosse is a game that anyone can play it’s fairly easy to pick up and with enough time even the most novice of players can be an expert. In this paper we will explore the basic rules and regulations of lacrosse, the positions of lacrosse, and the equipment one will need to play lacrosse. Lacrosse is a game that can be enjoyed at any age by anyone.
A high intensity game that involves physical attributes and cognitive awareness describes the sport lacrosse. People play lacrosse all over the world and the sport continues to grow in size. The sport lacrosse dates all the way back to when Indians would play for land and resources. The word lacrosse translates to “Little Brother of War”. Men and women of all ages and levels play the game lacrosse to this day. At the Eastern Cincinnati Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio, the sport lacrosse qualifies as a club rather than a sport. The sport lacrosse should qualify as a sport because it would reduce costs, more players would join, it offers benefits, and people would consider lacrosse as a more serious sport.
Especially when I got to college. How could this 18-year-old kid be taking this many classes and still have time for practice, let alone time with friends? As I was working to finish a 5-page paper, the lacrosse guys were working to finish a 5-mile run. Why on earth would one choose this path if they both led to the same result? I never understood, until I talked to one of them. Matt was a freshman at Illinois State University, coming from his hometown of Naperville. Matt was also late for class… He stumbled in, looked towards the teacher for any sign of pity, and finally found a spot in the desk next to me. I could tell by his team jacket and sweaty hair, that he had just come from lacrosse practice. “Hey man, do you play lacrosse here?” I asked. He looked at me with almost a sigh of relief; he now had someone who understood his struggle. “I do!” he replied, “Our first game is this Saturday!” Without beating around the bush, I whispered, “How do you have time to do schoolwork, and lacrosse?” He laughed, “I actually have a job too if you can believe it. Out of all of them, lacrosse is the only one that keeps me in check. It doesn’t really feel like work to me, it’s just something that I really enjoy”. The realization came to me at once after these words. The same way I felt about writing a paper was the same way Matt felt about lacrosse. It wasn’t work; it was finally a chance to play! Sure, both take a lot of long hours and dedication, but where we choose to allocate this dedication is what makes us the individuals that we are! I guarantee Matt couldn’t write a better English paper than myself. I also guarantee that I couldn’t keep up with him during a 5-mile run. We are
Soccer is a sport that’s very challenging and during the course of this semester I’ve found physics can also be described as challenging. As far as I was concerned soccer and physics were both challenging and that was all they had in common, consequently upon researching them both this semester I found that I was wrong. For me this was nothing new because I’ve found that physics isn’t a subject that can be skimmed, but rather it has to be studied to the finest detail. Those small details if missed can make all your efforts worthless. Or on the positive side understanding those details can make your efforts worth it in the end. And in soccer if you understand the physics, which to most players
