Your mind is reading this sentence in English because it has been taught how to. As children, we learned the alphabet and the sounds each letter made. Then we learned how to put the sounds together to make words. The words we learned are the language we speak today, which is English. We are taught how to speak, read, and write in English. However, where did the English language come from? Despite the fact that English has become our primary language, Latin was the language English derived from.
What is a language exactly? A language falls into the category of communication and is defined as a method of human communication, either spoke or written. It is what we use to communicate with each other. Without language, we wouldn’t have any idea what to do in the world. We communicate with language everyday of our lives. For example, if someone was hungry, they would simply say, “I’m hungry.” How would we understand anything without language? It would be impossible. Language is also used to let someone understand how you feel. A student can simply say, “I have a stomach ache,” to a teacher and the teacher would understand he or she was not feeling well. Every word used in the English language has a definition and that’s why we know what each word means. Using Language to communicate is the foundation to this world. Communication is key to being able to be successful and Latin has made it possible for us to be successful in knowing our language and being able to communicate with

Think about your personal definition of morality. Is it a set of independent morals or are they applicable to the community as a whole? Virtue refers to high moral standards. In the pre-revolutionary American colonies, the idea of virtue was central to the idea of the “quintessential American”. Benjamin Franklin and John Winthrop created their own set of virtues to live by. Both of the prominent colonists drew from their past experiences, religious beliefs, and their beliefs about the foundation of human nature. Because he took an individualistic approach motivated by divine reward, Benjamin Franklin changed Boston’s idea of virtue from the Puritanical, community based morals set by John Winthrop decades previously.
Language is an object that is central to human lives as it is perhaps the most significant cultural tool that separates humans from any other species (Evans, 2014). As language is multimodal, it is often described as a combination of words, sounds, gestures and images created by the mind, used in context with the assistance of objects, actions and interactions (Gee & Hayes, p. 7, 2011). The topics discussed in this essay will demonstrate the importance of language as both an object and as a social process, as a teacher’s approach to diversity in the classroom can be either damaging to a student’s educational experience or uplifting and positive.
In an authoritative and widely cited translation of the Analects of Confucius originally published in 1938, celebrated English sinologist Arthur Waley provided the most comprehensive explication of this enduring contribution to humanistic philosophy, one which has since been continually reprinted for scholarly study. An anthology of short yet powerful passages which capture the beliefs taught by Confucius during his lifetime, the Analects offers a fluid recreation of Confucius and his associated teachings, through the prism provided by the evolving structure of the school of thought created. Beginning with a sober deconstruction of the mythologizing which has come to define the Western conception of Confucius, of whom Waley states "it appears from the Analects that he was a private person who trained the sons of gentlemen in the virtues proper to a member of the ruling class" (14), this translation offers modern readers with an comprehensive and historically accurate interpretation of the Analects, and their influence on the resulting system of moral mastery known as Confucianism. Spreading slowly but steadily throughout China after the original texts comprising the Analects was compiled by Confucius' pupils in approximately 300 BCE, the philosophy of social and political ethics espoused in these twenty books developed into a combination of religious dogma and ruling doctrine.
“Neologisms” are new words added to a language to capture new ideas or phenomena when there is a gap in the existing vocabulary. In the last 10 years, the Oxford English Dictionary has added “bling”, “bromance”, “chillax”, “locavore”, “upcycle”, and “woot”. What word would you invent to add to the English language, and why?

In my country, English is taught as a foreign language. The school that I was teaching is a bilingual school. They use English as one of instruction languages. However, in a certain level, the instruction language is mixed between L1 and English depending on the need of students. I teach English for senior high school students. Their ages are ranging from 13 to 14. The students in this context are first-grade students in senior high school. They are divided into two level. The one that I am preparing the material for is the pre- intermediate level students. These students can understand a simple text even though they do not understand all vocabulary. They read graded reader book every week and have a test every two month. This reading activity aims for comprehension and vocabulary practice.t
I would have never thought I would incorporate these many languages in my life, but I am glad I have, for they are very applicable. No doubt, learning a language can take a lot of time and effort, but their benefits outweigh their disadvantages. Monolinguals, especially in the United States, should become fluent in another language because of increased global communication, business and career benefits, and cognitive improvement.
What inspires a man to forge his linguistic capabilities of his primary language from sub-rudimentary level, into an art form? Well, as I am only a singular individual, I cannot answer for the entirety of society, but I can give you a record of a period of my life that motivated me to attempt to excel at learning the English Language. So, what inspired me to learn the English Language better than what I knew beforehand? The answer is not as straight forward. I had many things that happened to me around the same time, the first event was my experiences in Speech and Debate. The Second was what I learned in English Class and History Class. Finally, was me learning military tactics, and philosophy. All of these events helped me to come to the conclusion that in order to be an excellent leader and be a persuasive speaker or writer, one must know the language of his subordinates, peers, and superiors, and be able to communicate effectively with them.

I knew from the first day I started high school I had no desire to go to college. My main goal was to graduate high school even if that meant doing only the bare minimum. Which is exactly what I did. I didn't know how important an education was until after high school. Once graduating I enrolled into cosmetology school and even there my instructors advised me to get a degree, which I still was against. After receiving my cosmetology license I began working at a beauty supply store. I found myself knowing what I wanted to say but not knowing how to get it across without talking in ebonics when educating customers. We had a lot of Hispanic customers and only had one employee who spoke Spanish. On her off days I would find myself trying to translate as much as I could from what I could remember from high school Spanish classes. However I spoke Spanglish, a mixture of English and Spanish, which left me feeling embarrassed and frustrated that I couldn't communicate like I wanted to. This prompted me to go back to school for a degree in Spanish and work on my English skills. In her article, “Spanish Lesson,” Christine Marin writes about being raised in an English only household despite being Mexican-American and learning the power of her Spanish language and being bilingual. In the article, “Homemade Education,” Malcolm X describes being street articulate but not knowing how to express himself how he wanted to through letters. Malcolm X and Marin have both overcome learning
Based on the numerous sources of sound data available, U.S. is currently out-educated. On the latest Program for International Student Assessment form 2015, the United States scored an average in reading and science, and below average in math. Results had been unchanged since 2000. U.S. scores are behind global leaders like Finland, South Korea and Canada. It is not a surprise that Shanghai outscored every other country, in all areas tested.
Many Americans due to the fact that they have been in America they believe that the English language is easier to master than another language. Moreover, U.S college students believes that since they speak English frequently throughout the day they have mastered the English language. However, this may sound like common sense but it not true. Studies “from the U.S Department of Education shows that many high school seniors are graduating unable to read at grade level and one in four cannot read at even the most basic level” (abcnews.go.com). These studies completely refute the theory that mastering the skills of English is unnecessary. Malcolm X who “was one of the most articulate and powerful leaders of black America during the 1960s” even struggled with the English language (palomar.edu). In addition to that, he was born in America too. Evidence to the previous claim is in “Learning to Read,” where Malcom X said it himself saying, “Trying to write simple English, I not only wasn’t articulate, I wasn’t even functional.” Malcom X did not let that stop him. He performs some effective techniques in his pursuit of enhancement that college students emulate if they want to improve. Practicing, Reading, and learning new words are three effective techniques that college students should use to reach their mastery level of the English language.
