Technology is quickly developing as a method of communication and information for people everywhere. As technology becomes a part of education, it captures the attention of students in a special way of its own. Although technology is fairly new, technology draws the attention of students because it is interactive and offers many different methods of learning and information for students.
Technology offers both unique and informative methods of learning and information that strongly capture the attention of students. Over the past several decades, we have used the same techniques and strategies in education in the United States. Schools in the 1900’s were preparing students for the “mechanized, routinized labor of the factory” (57), and would use strategies that focus on “rote memorization and mastery of facts” (57). However, as our country and world continue to rapidly grow and change, these methods are becoming less and less effective. Using things like standardized tests and reading textbooks do not allow students to fully expand their minds. Instead, they require them to use the same “routine thinking skills” (60) that are now outdated in the job market, and do not include the many different ways in which students learn. Standardization runs on a “one-size-fits-all model” (60), which doesn’t include talents like art or other special skills. According to brain researchers, kids with “directed, special attention” (60), like smaller class sizes, work better, as opposed to
In this day and age, it appears students and technology go hand in hand. Despite being a controversial conversation, teachers and other andminstators are searching tonintergrate computers and othe technological devices into schools. Nevertheless, in order to efficently develop students into successful thinkers, technology will only be practical if used to enhance learning, not control leaning.
Technology in the classroom is important for teachers, parents, and students alike, because technology use has become a necessary skill for survival in today’s vastly expanding technology driven global economy. Research has shown an increase in student’s success rates when exposed to technology in the classroom. Also technology has opened lines of communication between educators and parents to keep students on track, and help teachers educate better.
As we progress through 21st century, technology plays a vital role in our education system and how students are thought in society. The way students are thought are more advance than just reading books, taking notes, completing assignment, essays and so forth. There was a time that education and learning were not possible without teachers, but today has taken on a whole new meaning. Incorporating modern technology in classrooms can better prepare students with technical skills that might be beneficial in their field of study. The digital age has reshaped the way student learn and create. It has become more versatile unlike any other time in history. As any educator knows it is essential to keep students engaged. (Wainwright). Educators must not only understand the changing ways that students are acquiring knowledge and interacting with content but serve as a guide to help them navigate the nuanced challenges of the digital world. (Dawn Wilson). Students today have grown up will technology so school in our society today must modify with the times and adapt to the way students are learning, because technology is a central part of our everyday lives it should be a key aspect in education in order to prepare students for the real world and their future endeavor.
In America and many other countries, technology has impacted our daily lives in many ways. Many people use technology for communication, education, business, or personal use. The technology industry is growing rapidly to the point where we are surrounded by technology everywhere we go. It is even almost unheard of to not have an email or a cell phone today. Parents should not limit their child’s technology access because our society revolves around technology. If parents limit their child’s technology access, students may fall behind in school, be unsuccessful in their careers, and fail to adapt to America’s rapidly changing culture.
The amount of technology on the shelves at ROWVA community School District 208 is very impressive for such a small, rural district. While looking at the vast opportunities available for learning, one may assume that technology is the focus of education, that is not the case. It is time to teach technology - not for technology's sake but to ignite a spark of creativity and logical problem solving that is sometimes lost in the “old factory” ways of education. Educators should integrate technology into the classroom through various techniques to enhance student collaboration, problem solving skills as well as provide the student a platform to document their learning progress and process. Implementing the technological devices
Technology prepares students for their careers. First, it links to the need for technologically literate workers. Schools are teaching students to operate technology for their careers. For example, schools are adopting important technical roles that helps students use computer systems and in turn create more jobs for the United Kingdom (“We Need More Digital”). In classrooms, students learn the basic features on the computer, like word processor, that will enhance their technological skills needed for their jobs. Additionally, Gartner Incorporation, a technology company, states the importance of robotic classes. These classes “need students who can come up with powerful and smarter robotic software that can perform new functions” (qtd in Marshall). Both the robotic aspect and the problem solving makes them more tech literate. Next, technology teaches students to adapt to new environments. Schools provided training centers to help students adapt to new resources. For instance, Morales, a professor in education, emphasized about how The Academic Students Development Program offered informational advice to guide students on how to use technology. Training centers mentor students to use technology, be independent, and cooperate with learning techniques (Morales and Roig 69). Preparation centers show children how to transition from the traditional learning to computerized work for multiple school and job settings. Also, Dell introduced multiple displays for classroom
Technology is an ever-changing learning tool that requires a lot of thought and a lot of practice in order to utilize it well. There are times when I feel like a leader and there are times when I am the student in the field of technology. I do understand the importance of using it within my classroom, but often I do not have the time to use it correctly or to its full potential. Oncu, Delialioglu & Brown (2008) state that “while there is more technology in classrooms, there is little evidence that these technologies are integrated into instruction” (p.20). In order for technology to be effective, it must be implemented well in order to be effective. In any case, technology is a 21st century skill and it needs to be embraced in the educational community.
Technology has been around since the beginning of modern man and it has continued to evolve and transform with time. When once simple hand tools to complete simple tasks were considered technological advances; today technology is viewed a little differently, but the presence remains the same. Technology, beginning near the end of the 20th century and on into today has grown exponentially, and so have the uses and roles, it plays in our daily lives. With this ever-increasing role technology plays in the day-to-day lives of man also comes the increasing role of technology in the workforce, as well as in education. While some educators are open to the notion of implementing technology into the classroom, seeing it enhance student engagement and student learning, other educators see the increasing push for technology into the classroom as a negative outcome. This debate may never be solved completely, but perhaps those resistant to the idea, fearing the technology will, in fact, replace them, are merely just uninformed about how to go about using technology in their classroom, and how it is meant to be an aid in the education of students, not a replacement.
Technology connects students to the world. Educators must use this as a teaching tool to influence thinking, learning, and achievement. According to Holzemer (1998), “the integration of multimedia into the curriculum has helped teachers create student-centered learning environments that encourage students to take responsibility for their learning” (p. 1). The students will receive the opportunities to think critically, provide substance to their activities, learn with their peers and the teacher, and adapt to a continuous learning experience. During multimedia projects, students must learn and apply the appropriate way to present the material. This can be accomplished through photography, videography, a multimedia presentation, and so much more. The more confident a student becomes, the possibilities will be endless. “Putting together a multimedia presentation is a lot of work”, but using an innovative and creative solution will foster creative thinking (Holzemer, 1998, p. 1). Multimedia allows students to work in groups much more effectively. The teacher can set goals, mentor the group and individual students, and keep their projects on task. If the students choose to use PowerPoint or GoogleDocs, for example, “students teach each other the details of the multimedia authoring program being used” (Holzemer, 1998, p. 1). Many students are already familiar with the programs, and occasionally know or can learn the program quicker than the teacher. Many teachers admit, “students
In the last several years, college, administrators, faculty, and staff have observed the growing number of adult students enrolling in classes. Since these nontraditional students have recently come back, they are struggling more with technology-dominant classrooms compared to their traditional counterparts. These institutions have initiated methods to work with this problem, such as implementing beginner computer courses and encouraging them to be proactive in practicing their new found skills. Contemporary education research has observed numerous obstacles that adult student encounter returning to school. There is a learning gap that educators must close between traditional and adult students. While adult students bring valuable life experience and practical skills, they lack a background in modern programs and navigating access to technology tools. Working together hand-in-hand adult students and instructions through training in technology and time management, adult students will have a better outlook on achieving their goals and dreams.
Technology has weaseled its way into numerous parts of regular day to day existence. We have turned out to be so acclimated to its utilization, we are not by any means mindful how simple everything has progressed toward becoming. In spite of the fact that many contend technology has done as much obliteration, Many schools have begun incorporating educational technologies in their schools with an incredible point of enhancing the way students learn. Technologies such as smartboards and computers has turned into an incredible source for teacher to enable students to get a handle on an idea effectively.
For years people have been searching for a more efficient way to learn; ways such as flashcards, textbooks, and agendas. Unfortunately, these techniques are not always reliable, or easy to access. Luckily, due to recent tests, educators have discovered that the use of technology has surprisingly proved as a more effective class source. After this study many schools and educators began to use technology as an everyday in-class resource, but there are still many teachers who fail to see technology’s impact. Those who do not use technology do not realize that technology can be compatible and convenient in any environment, is constantly being updated with new resources, and it helps give students a better understanding of a specific class
Technology is here to stay and appears to be ever advancing, but teachers are struggling to adapt with learning about the new software and tools that the districts are trying to implement into the curriculum. Teachers shape the minds of our future; thus making teaching the most important occupation in the world. In order to achieve maximum greatness in the classroom a teacher must be open to changing the methods in which they teach. With time, technology has seemed to shimmy its way into almost every aspect of the average American’s life; including the classroom. Technology is ever changing and with new advancements teachers must be able to adapt. The main issues that teachers as well as schools are facing with technology is the price of
As a student in the modern era, where technology is at an all-time high everywhere I look technology is being introduced into a teacher's curriculum. Technology in school, although once banned it is now being praised to have technology intertwined with a school lesson. Everywhere I look people give up old habits such as keeping a planner because your phone now offers a new way to be organized in an easier and faster manner. One habit that students are giving up with this technological surge is taking notes by hand. Personally, I at one point tried to take notes on my laptop or even study pre-written notes, found myself distracted with such easy access to the internet. Consequently, I found my grades had become lower due to me not paying attention and not being able to truly grasp the lesson being taught. Eventually, I discovered that writing notes by hand benefited me immensely more and allowed me to try process the information being taught. In the article “Attention, Students: Put Your Laptops Away” written by NPR staff member James Doubek, he illustrates why my grades had decreased during my time of writing notes on my laptop.
I am well aware of how technology can be an aid to education. I lived most of my life in Spain, which is considered a first-world country. However, in terms of education, Spain falls behind. Even though I didn’t notice it, not having a technologically advanced classroom hindered my learning. It wouldn’t be until I moved to the US that I realized how useful technology can be to the student. I truly believe that technology can help the majority of the students, and not just myself. As someone who has faced both sides of the coin, studying in a place where technology was discouraged in the classroom and studying in a place where technology was proactively encouraged, I believe that my experience can open people’s eyes to the usefulness of technology in education.
