I would like to become a student of the Masters of Social Work because I have a significant background in this area working with adults of both sexes as a Substance Abuse Counselor. In this context, many social experiences in my life have helped to shape this desire. Below are described some of the activities I have participated in that have influenced my decisions. For instance, after finishing high school I attended a secretarial school for a year where I graduated, found a job as a secretary, and start working in a place where I had to deal with numbers, accounts, and billing; therefore, I thought accounting would be the career I have to pursue. After having attended the accounting career for a year I changed my mind and me met with a friend who talked to me about the social work career, her passion, and her knowledge about social movements, and how important it is the role of the social worker for people in disadvantage; I decided to pursue the social work career, and I did it. While I was studying the social work career, I found a job in a non-profit organization where I got a lot of experience working with a female population who lived in the belt of poor neighborhoods, most of them were unemployed, illiterate, living in poverty, and also having to put up with domestic violence. Once I have graduated from the social work career, I continued working at the same place for several years until I move to the City of Chicago. Being part of a team of social workers, a
There are several goals that I hope to achieve by pursuing a graduate degree in Social Work. Pursuing a MSW will provide me with the knowledge, tools, and skills-set that will be fundamental to the achievement my career goals outlined below.
Pursuing a social work career can be very challenging but yet rewarding. In order to provide services for clients, you must have the adequate education and training to assist them. The minimum degree to become a social worker is a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW). The bachelor degree prepares graduates for entry-level social work positions. In order to be classified as a social worker, you must obtain degree from a college or university that accredited by Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). I began college in 2014 at the age of 58 years-old. I want to change my line of work and do something that is far more interesting to me, working within the social services field. I am sure the fact that I was brought up by two extremely dysfunctional parents and the engaged in relationships that were of that same caliber, has much to do with why I believe I have something of positive significance to offer today. In short, I married at 19 years-old and had 5 children. I married an alcoholic and abuser of all forms and although I knew he drank and was abusive, I did not understand what I was dealing with back then in 1975; I did not understand abuse then as I do today. I grew up in it; I was very accustomed to it, it was normal to me. Ten
I knew that even after I graduate from the masters program that I would like to continue to expand my knowledge through taking various workshops and even volunteering to enhance my social work skills and to be able to serve the clients that I support. This would involve taking advantage of any opportunities to be able to attend any local and regional meetings, conferences and workshops sponsored by professional organization, which may include an organization that I work for or even College of Social Work. For me personally, I finding having experience working in different areas and with different populations to be helpful in understanding of the various complex issues and strategies to combating issues. That is why I am always open to working
Ever since I can remember I have always had a passion for helping people. I always felt as if I was called to fulfill a greater purpose in life to assist those in need. It has always been my desire to be that motivation and the change in the lives' of those individuals who were less fortunate than me. My main goal is to work somewhere that makes me wake up in the morning eager to get to work because I love what I do. There is no other field that can give me that feeling, and this is why I chose the social work field.
Many personal and professional life experiences have been my motivation to pursue a degree in Social Work. Although I was unaware that this would later be my profession of interest, my personal life situations caused me to have to come into contact with a few social workers. The social workers that I have had the opportunity to meet have helped me with overcoming poverty, mental illness, child abuse, emotional instability, and domestic violence. My interest from pursuing a career as a parole officer, then a physical therapist to now a Social worker all shifted to this decision based on my life. Over the years I found myself enjoying helping others in need such as when I was employed as a Correctional officer and talking an offender from committing suicide causing me to question my future and whether I was in the wrong field.
I have been working as a social worker for the past three years. In all these years, it has always been my desire and passion to acquire enhanced social skills and knowledge to help me empower disadvantaged individuals and families take control of their lives. My desire therefore to pursue a Masters of Social Work degree (MSW) has been inspired by over three years of continuous work with families, children, youths and adults who require support to cope and combat oppressive structures and social injustices. It has therefore been my dream to pursue MSW program which I believe is the only program that can help me to accomplish my goal.
Once doing so, I plan to continue with my education and hopefully be accepted into a PhD program where I can further expand my knowledge. This is important because it will help me obtain ongoing education and more experience which can potentially offer promotional career opportunities for me. Promotional opportunities are important because I can potentially work with community leaders and or elected officials to effect change through laws, policies and community outreach. I want to continuously educate myself so that I can offer the best treatment to my clients and to bring awareness to the severity of the issues regarding this population. I am aware that social work is not an easy career choice. However, I want nothing more than to become part of the social work community so that I can offer my help. All of my educational choices so far have been great opportunities for me which have all confirmed that social work is the professional career choice for me. I know that social work will help me create a positive impact, allow me to accomplish my overall career goals and develop into the professional I want to
16. Why do people leave this field or company? People do and have different reasons for leaving their jobs. It's hard to sum up why people leave the field of social work because different thing happen to different people causing different outcomes in their life. But two reasons kathy could think of on the top of her head was low paid and high stress. At the start pay is low but increase well you move up. So some people don't have the patience to wait and move on to different jobs. Well being a social work is often stressful with the things that happen and the things that we have to do and see. So some people can't handle it and move on to new things in their life.
Attending college full-time and being a part-time employee is a difficult challenge I have faced while pursuing my education. I have had to make extremely difficult decision in previous semesters such as attending school part-time and working longer hours. Initially, I thought finding a school-work life balance would be very difficult, but found out it’s not impossible. I am committed to finishing my education goal, earning my Bachelors in Criminal Justice and my masters in social work, and I will not let my challenges discourage me.
As graduation nears, I find myself reflecting on what it means to be a social worker. I have questioned if the original purpose of me becoming a social worker was still my main focus, or had something changed? I originally decided to become a social worker because I saw a need for someone who could relate too and understand the military culture, and the experiences are men and women in the military who need help. However, from my studies, I have learned that shared experiences alone will not equate to me becoming a good social worker. I will still need to further and continue my education. Such as becoming aware of new theories and evidence-based practices, policies and culture changes. Nevertheless, I felt then and still do today that I can

It is my mantra that getting the opportunity to serve people in any capacity is a privilege that holds so much value and importance. To think about political leaders, extending themselves to solicit the mandate to serve, reiterates the notion that I hold about service to humanity. Everything we are doing as individuals and groups basically, are to make life better and easier for the people around us, what I term “a village community”. My parents, siblings, church, schools and other institutions have served me throughout my life, therefore I felt the onus at a younger age to also reciprocate. In effect, to broaden my understanding of people’s behaviors in order to better serve them, I studied Sociology & Social Work. The sociological knowledge provided the foundation for researching into societal problems and its effects on people; studying social work further proffered the fundamentals in identifying variety of resources that could solve these social problems. I had the opportunity to work as a peer counselor, where I helped colleague students navigate through the problems they faced on and off the college campus, especially their economic and mental health needs. After school, in Ghana, I travelled to the United States where I started off as a mental health counselor at Lahey Health Behavioral services. After working with mentally ill clients for a year, I pursued further studies in social work at Salem State University. I have been working with Lahey ever since as a
