Attending college full-time and being a part-time employee is a difficult challenge I have faced while pursuing my education. I have had to make extremely difficult decision in previous semesters such as attending school part-time and working longer hours. Initially, I thought finding a school-work life balance would be very difficult, but found out it’s not impossible. I am committed to finishing my education goal, earning my Bachelors in Criminal Justice and my masters in social work, and I will not let my challenges discourage me.

Social work involves passionate individuals who are dedicated to helping others by providing services to vulnerable children, families or individuals in need, while constantly looking for ways in which we can improve society. This discipline is dedicated to helping people find solutions to their problems in order to make the world a better place. I chose this field of study, because I find the job of a social worker rewarding. I have always enjoyed helping others and knowing that I have made a difference in someone’s life. It is no secret that this is a challenging career; however, the feeling of knowing that you made the world a better place is indescribable. I have simply decided to make my passion of helping others into a career. I know that in order to make my passion a career I will need to get the best education and training possible.
I began college in 2014 at the age of 58 years-old. I want to change my line of work and do something that is far more interesting to me, working within the social services field. I am sure the fact that I was brought up by two extremely dysfunctional parents and the engaged in relationships that were of that same caliber, has much to do with why I believe I have something of positive significance to offer today. In short, I married at 19 years-old and had 5 children. I married an alcoholic and abuser of all forms and although I knew he drank and was abusive, I did not understand what I was dealing with back then in 1975; I did not understand abuse then as I do today. I grew up in it; I was very accustomed to it, it was normal to me. Ten

My title as a Child Development Specialist, can be overwhelming and traumatic in itself. Some weeks, I worked 16 hours back to back, just so I could go to school and afford to live on my own. My life was at times was hectic and it definitely showed this semester, being a full-time student as well as a full-time employee. If given another chance, I have decided to switch my enrollment to part-time, in order to maintain GPA expectations. Also, I think I would benefit from managing a lighter course load while working full-time.
I have been working as a social worker for the past three years. In all these years, it has always been my desire and passion to acquire enhanced social skills and knowledge to help me empower disadvantaged individuals and families take control of their lives. My desire therefore to pursue a Masters of Social Work degree (MSW) has been inspired by over three years of continuous work with families, children, youths and adults who require support to cope and combat oppressive structures and social injustices. It has therefore been my dream to pursue MSW program which I believe is the only program that can help me to accomplish my goal.
Perusing a career in social work has been a passion of mines for a great deal of time. For the past few years I have been working towards making that dream come true. During my fifth semester I partook in a community based psychology course entitled Child Assault Prevention Education. Throughout this course I gained firsthand experience in working with the child welfare system. Within the classroom I discussed the various aspects of child maltreatment, brainstormed how child maltreatment can be prevented, and how to promote awareness of this issue.
These obstacles pose challenges to both access to college credential programs and to persistence and success, particularly for students who work full time and attend college part time. (Kazis et al., 2007, p. 15)
This learning experience is mainly going to help me grow as a person. I’m not always confident in some areas, and developing a plan of how I can plan to become a social worker will show me how I can strengthen some ideas to become better at it. Recently from my internship this past week, I had learned that if you work in the town where you’re from, there's going to be people in the community that know you. It’s best that you remember you still have to stick to the HIPAA laws. Because you don’t get into trouble by the state and lose your licensure. Confidentiality is always important because the client deserves to have why they're getting services between them and the worker. In my values, I displayed them as I normally would, I responded in

A movie that one would watch and not immediately think “social work,” would be X-Men: First Class. At first glance, it is a simple action movie about mutants with inhuman powers, but upon further inspection, social work concepts are bound to shine through. One concept in particular that becomes a crucial plot point in the movie is ethics. Such a concept leads to a connection between the movie and the ethical principles in social work that can be seen in the characters’ interactions with the main character throughout the film.
