With many nations on high alert, The United States must act on tighter immigration laws. Implementing Homeland Security after 9/11 was a start, but it has not been enough. With the most recent terrorist attacks in San Bernardino, and The Boston Marathon proves are system is broken. The continuous attacks of terror in Paris, Pakistan, and Brussels within the last several months our government must act now before it's to late before another 9/11 happens.
There have been many positive outcomes following the introduction of heightened airport security since 9/11. Public safety has improved dramatically as a consequence of new security measures, such as baggage being checked, with laptops, iPads, tablets or other electronic devices be taken out of the carry on bags, body scans, a document or a specific ID that shows you information and no liquid, aerosols or gels can be taken on board. These security measures are necessary because it protects the people and keeps them safe from any dangerous threats. For instance, in 2001, Richard Reid attempted to blow up a plane with a bomb located in his shoe. To prevent similar attacks in the future, shoes and outerwear clothing must now be removed and scanned
Then They Were Gone. The twin towers turn into a pile of ash and rubble after two planes disintegrate in the center of both towers. People were running every were to get to out of the ash and smoke fire fighters running in while everyone is running out many not making it back out. From this day on nothing has been the same the people were devastated that it happened and cried out for better security in our nation. Since September 11, 2001 United States security procedures have drastically changed.
Just like every Tuesday, Jane got up and ready for work. She got up at her usual time, about six AM, had a cup of coffee before she got her kids up and ready for school. As she’s helping her three year old daughter brush her teeth, Jane’s husband came in and said his final goodbyes to his wife. Sadly, neither Jane nor her husband knew that though. After about 7:45 AM Jane had her kids dropped off at school or preschool and was now on her way to work at The World Trade Center. September 11th use to be just a normal day in September until terrible events happened; these events changed America’s homeland security, started a war, and a memorial in New York.
Since its inception the DHS has gone through a shift in terms of overall concepts and missions. Something had to be done to ensure the safety of American people and protecting the U.S. homeland against future terrorist attacks. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security was enacted shortly after the September 11th 2001 attacks and the creation of DHS was one of the most significant changes made by the U.S. government with a clear mission of protecting our homeland.
According to Jason Villemez of the PBS News Hour, there were immediate changes to airport security following 9/11. Within 2 months of the attacks, the Aviation and Transportation Security Act was passed. This law requires that every single bag is screened at airports andrequires that certain procedures are followed at every airport (Swickard). Before 9/11, scissors, baseball bats, darts, and 4-inch-long blades were allowed, but these are now illegal under the ATSA (O’Connor). The Aviation and Transportation Security Act also created the Transportation Security Administration known as the TSA (Tognotti). Each airport had to supply their own security before 9/11, but with the creation of the TSA, the government supplied security for airports (Villemez). Gabi Logan of USA Today found that the increase in security including baggage checks caused a six percent decrease in the number of passengers. Passengers chose not to travel at all or found a different way to get to their destination. While security in airports was significantly increased, 9/11 also affected millions of Americans involved in the war on terror”.
Great post! The creation of Homeland Security itself is very interesting because we were all around for 9/11. We could tell you exactly what we were doing and where we were for this tragic event on our soil. The memory and depending on the person, the feelings will have a strong presence for the rest of our lives. When George W. Bush proposed The Department of Homeland Security in 2002, he was protecting and defending the American people. All of the different levels of government began to work together like never before. The nature of threats on America are ever changing and we required a structure to protect against invisible enemies that could strike at any time, with any weapon.
In response to what marked the United States forever, the September 11 attacks, the federal government procreated what is known as The Department of Homeland Security. The main responsibilities of the Department of Homeland Security consisted of having to protect the territory of the United States and protectorates from and responding to terrorist attacks, man-made accidents, and natural disasters. In another words, the existence of the Department of Homeland Security is to ensure a homeland that is safe, secure, and resilient against terrorism and other hazards. Though many different government agencies see and define Homeland Security accordingly to their protocol, the National Strategy for the Department of Homeland Security was able to
Homeland Security has not affected me negatively. However, I do feel positive about some changes that were made after the 9/11 attack, the Homeland Security Act was pushed through Congress to organize a government that is responsible for dealing with terrorist threats on the U.S. The aftermath of 9/11 brought awareness to our country. Personnel are more aware of when a threat exists and taking the needed steps to do something about the threat before it happens. Better changes made within the country after the 9/11 attack some examples are: 1. Travel (Aviation and Transportation Security Act). The new TSA implemented procedures that included stricter guidelines on passenger and luggage screening. 2. Government (Patriot Act and Transportation
When the topic of Homeland Security is introduced, the first thought that comes to mind is either 9/11 or the Transportation Security Administration, TSA for short. No matter the reference, most Americans know that Homeland Security has something to do with Terrorism. Until an actual attack occurs, or election season begins, the average person may never give any thought or credit to the Department of Homeland Security. Homeland Security goes far beyond terrorism and terrorism prevention. Homeland Security does not just encompass holding individuals up at airports for multiple hours to intentionally hinder passengers from catching their flight out of the Caribbean. Homeland Security is multiple levels of legislation; law and policy to prevent
The role of Homeland Security originated from the Founding Fathers, under the United States Constitution, that created a system and gave the primary role of homeland security to state and local governments (Oliver, 2007). When state and local governments became overwhelmed and could no longer effectively deal with a crisis then homeland security government would assist those governments (Oliver, 2007). The relationship was created through the United States Constitution in Article 4, Section 4, which declared that “the United States shall guarantee to every state in this Union a Republican form of government, and shall protect each of them against invasion; and on application of the legislature, or of the executive (when the legislature cannot be convened) against domestic violence” (U.S. Constitution, 2015) (Oliver, 2007). President John F. Kennedy was elected 1961, and made it a priority to necessitate organizational changes with homeland security (Oliver, 2007). President John F. Kennedy felt that local governments were doing little if anything to prepare for natural disasters and civil defense (Oliver, 2007). This became a priority for the Kennedy administration, and the office of civil and Defense mobilization was split into two agencies that became known as the Office of Emergency Planning and the Office of Civil Defense (Oliver, 2007).
“The Homeland Security Act of 2002 established the federal United States Department of Homeland Security. Its stated mission is to secure the nation against terrorist attacks, to protect against and respond to threats and to ensure safe and secure borders” (Andrew, C., & Walter, F., 2013). “In addition to reducing the nation’s vulnerability to terrorism, the act was also created minimize the damage and facilitate recovery from any attacks that may occur” (Homeland Security, Department of, 2017). Many people want protection from dangerous situations, but what’s the cost of protection.
The face of war has changed in the 21st century, a change that the United States is not totally prepared for. Our new enemies are not citizens of countries, they have no face, and they do not abide by any “rules of war.” Because of this, there is not a person safe from their attacks, from the President to military personnel to a college student in west Texas as now everyone is a target. They succeed by their element of surprise and their surprising ingenuity in creating their terror. Before someone can propose policy regarding terrorism, we need to begin to understand what incites these people to perpetrate such heinous acts and what they hope to gain by
The creation of the department of the homeland security was primarily the most significant policy to curb the events related to September 11, 2001. These events and the ongoing terrorists’ attacks made the federal government pass new laws, such as creating the Department of Homeland Security, and also the development of crisis management programs among others. On June 6, the former president, Bush decided to form a cabinet level department of the Homeland security in order to merge federal agencies with homeland security missions. The president already had formed the White House Office of Homeland Security to aid in condonation role for the agency. The administration worked closely with Congress to ensure homeland security measures have been monitored.
Great post-Jasmin. I say this very respectfully. I can always depend on your discussion post to be straightforward and authentic. The homeland security assessment has proven itself to be a beneficial tool for any organization, especially one such as an abortion clinic, where they provide a service to a very controversial customer. Since the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973 that made abortions legal, the violence against women’s health care providers has consistently increased from picketing to murders, arsons, bombings and Anthrax attacks( Violence Statistics & History-National Abortion,n.d). Any healthcare provider who has not conducted some form of risk assessment to protect their employees, customers, and vendors from threats of violence is
What are the capabilities and limitations of intelligence in supporting homeland security efforts? The limitations of intelligence in Homeland Security are still the information gathering and the sharing of this information among multiple Federal Agencies, State, Local and Nongovernmental organizations, along with foreign intelligence services.
