On September 11th, a tragedy happened when almost 3500 people died from a terrorist attack. One thing that did not change after this was the way America held itself together. Something devastating had happened but they still managed to push through it and come out strong. As well, the support that American's and other places around the world gave each other are still strong today. Just like every Tuesday, Jane got up and ready for work. She got up at her usual time, about six AM, had a cup of coffee before she got her kids up and ready for school. As she’s helping her three year old daughter brush her teeth, Jane’s husband came in and said his final goodbyes to his wife. Sadly, neither Jane nor her husband knew that though. After about 7:45 AM Jane had her kids dropped off at school or preschool and was now on her way to work at The World Trade Center. September 11th use to be just a normal day in September until terrible events happened; these events changed America’s homeland security, started a war, and a memorial in New York.

Since its inception the DHS has gone through a shift in terms of overall concepts and missions. Something had to be done to ensure the safety of American people and protecting the U.S. homeland against future terrorist attacks. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security was enacted shortly after the September 11th 2001 attacks and the creation of DHS was one of the most significant changes made by the U.S. government with a clear mission of protecting our homeland.

Since the events of September 11, 2016, many Americans want to know what the government has done or are doing to make America safer and is it working. After America endured attacks or was involved in war, the government made changes to attempt to make the country safer. Some of the most recent changes involve The Patriot Act and changes to our immigration laws. Before we can look ahead to the present, we need to look into the past to see if our government has learned from past bad practices or if they have indeed helped us become more secure as the United States has had its share of surprise attacks.

Jo Ann Davis once said, “The terrorist attacks upon our country changed the way that we live forever and provided us with a cruel reminder that freedom and liberty have a price.” When a tragedy happens most people don’t think that it will ever happen to them until it actually does. I think that when major events happen in the United States it shocks Americans because they did not expect anything to happen. From a personal experience, I am just like most people when it comes to a tragedy; I freak out! Through out my seventeen years that I have been alive, three major events have happened that have affected me: 9/11, Barack Obama being elected as President, and the war in Afghanistan.

As Americans, we the people, as well as our nation are built on past events that have occurred. Sometimes our moods are even based on occuring American events. Currently, some people are ecstatic while others are heartbroken or mournful that our 2017 president-elect is Donald Trump. The election has already dramatically changed and shaped people not only in America, but in countries all around the world. The September 11th attacks have had a profound effect on American history. Often referred to as “9/11”, these attacks were comprised of a group of organized terrorists known as Al-Qaeda. This extreme Islamic group assaulted several landmarks in New York City, Washington D.C, and the state of Pennsylvania. In New York City, two airliner jets were hijacked with passengers aboard and slammed into the World Trade Center. “The next attack resulted in a plane colliding into the Pentagon, government building; the last attack was in Pennsylvania when a plane crashed into a field. In total, 3,000 people died on September 11th, 2001” (History.com Staff). The September 11th-attacks have affected airport security by the new training of flight attendants, the formation of the Transportation Security Administration and new technical advances to keep up with increased terror threats.

September 11. 2001 was a major turning point in American History, and its political and social impact can still be felt today. The tragic event shook the entire country on the civilian and federal level. Before 9/11 many did not think that a plan of terrorism such as that of Osama Bin Laden's would be able to come to fruition because they had great trust in American security. The destruction came as a wakeup call to the federal government and American citizens themselves. National Security became the first thing people thought of when they traveled, and civilians looked to the government for reassurance that they were safe. The federal government's plan of action was to pass a series of acts that would go on to create the Department of Homeland Security and Transportation Security Association. Along with the creation of more strict security measures came the question of "who is a terrorist?" within the country. The formation of the DHS, TSA, and increase of Islamophobia are some examples of the lasting effects that 9/11 had on the country.

September 11, 2001, millions of New Yorkers and American citizens woke up and started their day, unprepared and unaware for the catastrophic attack that would be taking place in just a few short hours. At 8:46 a.m., Eastern Standard Time, Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower. The impact killed all of the passengers and crew as well as hundreds inside the building. At 9:03 a.m., a second plane, Flight 175, crashed into the corner of the South Tower killing passenger, crew, and workers who worked on floors seventy-five to eighty-three. Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m. killing approximately 185 individuals (History.com Staff). Because of the damaged to the support system, fires, and impact at extremely fast speed, the South Tower collapsed at 9:59 a.m. (Lipton and Glanz). Having heard about the acts of terrorism that had just taken place in New York and Washington, D.C., a group of passengers drove their plane, Flight 93, into a Pennsylvania field killing everyone on board but possibly saving hundreds of other lives in the process. The North Tower collapsed at 10:28 a.m. 102 minutes after being struck (History.com Staff). On September 11, 2001, almost twelve hundred people were wounded or killed by “coordinated suicide attempts” by Al Qaeda terrorists. In result to the four airplanes being hijacked and used for premediated reasons, the United States government instituted new regulations for entering the country and airport security as well as expounded on systems already in place.

When the terrorist attacks occurred on 9/11 it did more than just affect the comfort level of American citizens. It had an all around impact on how this country will be run for years to come. The one economic impact that I will concentrate on is that the attacks, arguably, but directly effected the U.S. GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and how the national budget will be handled from that day forward.

On the clear morning of Tuesday, September 11th, 2001, the United States of America was brutally attacked by cowardly terrorist. 4 planes leaving northeastern airports were hijacked, American Airline Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 struck World Trade Center Towers 1 and 2, American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon building and United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania after passages stormed the cockpit but was too late. According to History.com “A total of 2,996 people were killed in the 9/11 attacks (History.com Staff)”. In this Research paper I plan on figuring out How did the attacks affect American security policies, how did they impact U.S. foreign policy, and how did they impact American views of Islam?
