The Importance Of Gun Control

Recently, there has been a substantial amount of debate on whether there should be gun control. The United States should not create more gun control because it restricts the right to self-defense but it will not prevent criminals from obtaining guns and breaking laws the Second Amendment of the constitution defends individual gun ownership. Likewise, the Second Amendment of the constitution defends individual gun ownership. In contrast, some conclude gun control laws will decrease suicide and murder rates; however, this is not the case.
The Second Amendment protects the American people the right to own a gun whether or not one is in the military. In the Constitution, it states that “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” (Strasser). Many people pick apart the second amendment saying it is only talking about the militia but, in 2008 the Supreme Court ruled that the amendment “protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that use the arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home” ( US Supreme Court). The second amendment makes it possible for those who are not in the military to carry a gun. Similarly, the Supreme Court decided during the Mcdonald Vs. City of Chicago case that the second amendment was an individual right (“Gun Control”). The case further explained that gun ownership is an individual right.
