The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (2017), reported natural products as the most commonly used CAM method. It has been found, use of natural products improve the quality of life, increase cancer survival rate and improve immune function (Yin, Wei, Jian & Yang , 2013). A systematic review by Yin, et al. (2013), reported cancer patients who used Chemotherapy and natural products such as, astragalus, turmeric, ginseng and ginger have shown a positive outcome regarding cancer symptoms. Most commonly reported was a reduction in chemotherapy induced nausea, vomiting and pain (Yin, et al., 2013). In a study by Lu, et al., 2008, stated those who previously used pharmaceuticals to treat their post chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting reported higher rates of emesis compared to those who used acupuncture to treat their symptoms. Just as patients have negative side-effects while using drugs to treat post chemotherapy induced nausea, cancer patients are also susceptible to having post-operative pain. Patients who are treated with opioids can have negative side effects on the medication they also try acupuncture (Lu, et al., 2008). Although, acupuncture and cancer specific pain has not been widely researched, there is evidence that chronic pain unrelated to cancer has seen significant benefits from acupuncture (Lu, et al., 2008). Unfortunately, there is not enough clinical evidence suggesting that all cancer symptoms can be treated with acupuncture (Lu, et al., 2008). Despite the positive outcomes, there is research that contradicts the use of acupuncture and cancer care. It is suggested, those who are at a high risk for infections, have clotting dysfunctions, needle phobia or have had certain surgeries should avoid acupuncture (O'Regan & Filshie, 2010).
