The purpose of this paper is to analyze the impacts and benefits of ecotourism to Costa Rica in the perspective of the environment, local community and development of tourism sustainability; the ways ecotourism creates awareness of the importance of natural and cultural conservation; and the prospective benefits and risks of ecotourism to Costa Rica in term of the local community, the biodiversity and the environment.
2.0 The Impacts and Benefits of Ecotourism to Costa Rica As tourism is clearly going mainstream in Costa Rica currently, it must have leave an impacts to the country, be it an advantages or disadvantages to the country.
2.1 Protection of Nature As mentioned earlier, in 1983, almost half of the woodland was cut down. But when Costa Rica began the industry of ecotourism and build more national parks and wildlife parks, the annual deforestation rate had dropped. In 1998 the deforestation rate had dropped to zero, and currently, the forest cover has increased to more than 50%, which doubled from 1983 (Blasiak 2011). The expansion of the protected area of the country to 30% had saved many areas from being used for logging, farming or mining, which will cause a lot of flora and fauna to extinct, given that Costa Rica is the home to estimated more than 850 of bird

To point it out, with the overflowing amount of tourists coming in to Costa Rica, new hotels, facilities and infrastructures will have to be built. As a result, disturbance of wildlife and vegetation damage will happen, and as a matter of fact, in the Manuel Antonio area, this has already cause biodiversity losses and it is expected that the same will happen to the Monteverde region not far in the future (Koens

Many people immigrate to Costa Rica for the education and literacy rate there are extraordinary. There’s Many goods in Costa Rica such as Coffee Beans, Bananas, Lumber and Sugar and they are all exported from Costa Rica. The people from Costa Rica depend on fruit, mining, lumber and other resources the country has adapted to the area by building houses with area conditioning and bridges for areas that are separated by bodies of water they have also build dams that provide energy and big factories for producing mass production products they also have airlines, airplanes, the postal mail services and etc. They have also evolved in communication because back then they could only communicate through person and now they communicate through email, text, and
Another country that has significantly embraced ecotourism is Costa Rica. A tiny Central American country located just a few hours’ flight from the United States, Costa Rica rapidly transformed to a green destination, and in 1992 the U.S. Adventure Travel Society declared Costa Rica “the number one ecotourism destination in the world” (160). Its success finds its root in a mix of positive conditions that most of the other ecotourism sites lack, varying from a stable democracy to the abolition of the army, and including one of the highest standards of
Not only is Costa Rica’s nature very diverse and unique, but also its geography is extremely different. Geography in Costa Rica plays a big role. For example, Costa Rica is home to one of the world’s second most active volcano, Arenal (Pearson). “There are more than 121 volcanic formations in Costa Rica, and seven of them are active” (“Interesting Facts”). Costa Rica is renowned for its beaches.
First, “The country's 600 species of birds include the colorful quetzal, the macaw, and the toucan, along with eagles that prowl the upper reaches of the forest” (“Costa Rica”). Since the country is like a rainforest, there is going to be animals and other wildlife that live in it. Second, “Irazu is the tallest volcano in Costa Rica at 11,259 feet” (Costa Rica). Costa Rica’s beaches are surrounded by volcanos. Also, “Costa Rica is a popular choice for American expatriates who want to retire in the tropics” (“Costa Rica”). For example, 53% of north americans visit Costa Rica. In addition, “Pura vida” is the national saying, which means “pure life,” a sunny, feel good expression used as a greeting, goodbye, or if someone asks how you are doing” (“Costa Rica”). For example, Costa Ricans would call the country “pura vida” because they think it is sunny and peaceful. Finally, “A pulperia is a neighborhood store that sells essential foodstuffs like canned goods, eggs, milk, bread and some produce” (“Costa Rica”). It is the grocery store for them but it’s quicker and you get all the stuff you need. The natural life is different from
As mentioned by Rimmington & Morrison (2009), the assistance from different parts of the world presents a new and diverse outlook for future research including theoretical innovations and revelations, cultural and environmental aspects, tourist destination and other ecotourism and recreational aspects of tourism and hospitality industry (Brotherton,
Costa Rica is one of the top destinations for college kids around the world but people might not think this is the safest destination after finishing this travel article. Costa Rica may trick people with the diverse flora and fauna, beautiful beaches, and biodiverse rainforest but there is a lot more going on behind the scenes. Most recently Costa Rica has been targeted to traffic drugs, sex trafficking has become the income source of several towns, there are cases of crime targeted at tourists and due to all of this, the country’s crime rate is increasing at a fast and dangerous rate
Just like other countries, Costa Rica was a victim to deforestation and other environmental degradation in the past. Now, however, Costa Rica is widely known for the preservation of its forests, wildlife, and the overall well-being of the environment of its pristine country. The government of Costa Rica realized the issues of the environmental degradation they had caused and pledged to never go back. Now, Costa Rica is one of the biggest leaders in the “green” movement. The governmental agency SETENA, has helped Costa Rica’s eco-preservation. SETENA is the Costa Rican National Environmental Office. SETENA stands for, “Secretaría Técnica Nacional Ambiental” which translates to “National Environmental Technical Secretariat”. The purpose of this agency is to address the environmental impacts from development and building.
Costa Rica’s rainforests are some of the most beautiful natural attractions in the world today. Each and every year people travel to this country in Central America to see these vibrant rainforests. There are parts of the year that are more vibrant than others. During the rainy season, which falls from May to late October, the rainforests are more lively and colorful than ever. As you near November the colors start to fade; however, later months hold their own beauty in different ways than color. As the dry season begins the lively and bright colors slowly fade to a duller color.
Natural hazards strike several parts of the world, some areas tend to get more hit than others because of their location. For this project, I have chosen to focus in the Republic of Costa Rica. The republic of Costa Rica is mostly known as Costa Rica. Costa Rica means “rich coast”. Such country is slightly smaller than Lake Michigan and even though It only takes up .03% of planet’s surface it holds 5% of its biodiversity. Costa Rica is located in Central America, bordered by Panama to the southeast, Nicaragua to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and the Caribbean Sea to the east.
Nicaragua is the second poorest country of the western hemisphere and the poorest country in Central America. Issues with poverty are mainly all Nicaragua cares right now. Environmental issues such as deforestation are generally ignored by the government because these problems are considered not urgent enough. However, the government cannot neglect the importance of stopping deforestation. It is obviously vital to this country. Tourism is a major part of Nicaragua’s economy. Deforestation is threatening this rising part of economy. Without the terrific environment and so many wild animals, this is no way for tourism to keep developing in the future. Therefore, protecting rainforest is not only critical for protecting wild animals, but also critical for protecting the future of Nicaraguan economy. If the government do not take real actions, it will be the doom for wild animals like Baird’s tapir in near future. Nicaragua is a poor country, but it still has an advantage about rainforest and wildlife. Now it is slowly losing this advantage. Rainforest and wildlife should be the symbol and hope for this country. Nicaragua cannot afford to lose them. They are simply priceless.
This paper explores a great number of academic research journals and databases on the impact that the tourism industry has on the countries in the Caribbean. Tourism impacts the Caribbean in three different sections. Tourism has a social impact that allows for increases in revenue, jobs, and service for the people living there. Tourism’s cultural impact allows the history and heritage of the Caribbean to be acknowledged and practiced not only here but around the world as tourists come and go. Tourism’s environmental impact effects the natural and geographical diversity that can only be found in these countries. Although tourism brings about many advantages in all three categories, there are still negatives attributes that appear from tourism that must be handled properly to maintain a successful industry. This paper examines 12 different research journals that suggest all of the positives and negatives of tourism in the Caribbean and how they can effect not only the tourism industry but the area in which they are practiced.
Planning and development are both extremely important factors within the tourism industry and can have both positive and negative effects on the environment, local communities and tourist destinations. “Destination planning aims to limit the negative impacts of cultural tourism upon the history and lifestyles of the local community. An understanding of sustainable tourist development allows for the development of culture without loss of its authentic identity” (Maidment. T. 2012). This statement discusses the importance of planning to avoid having any negative impacts on environments and communities. Because the effects of tourism are so severe to destinations, many natural and cultural resources have been destroyed, therefore tourism planning is vital to preserve and maintain these places for future generations.
