Hunger throughout America is something that 12 million Americans are battling with everyday. That’s one in every six people (dosomething.org) In Texas alone, 4,320,050 people are tackling hunger and of those 4,320,050 people, 1,713,430 are children- or one in four children throughout Texas (Feeding America). Throughout North Texas, “the number of people living in poverty is 631,261” (Glean Texas). Since hunger is tied to poverty, it is assumed that those living in poverty in North Texas are also living with hunger insecurities. To brighten things up a bit, Flower Mound, is considered to be a more wealthier town in North Texas. Ranked by the American City Business, Flower Mound is “number 21 on a list of the top 50 cities in the Southern …show more content…
The S Tracy Howard Project focuses most of their work during the summer months due to the actuality that “this is the most challenging time in a child 's life in receiving the proper nutrition” (sthproject). They do, however, also have an after school program in select communities during the school year, along with providing gently used books, exercise and health education, and job training (sthproject). All of the work that this charity provides shows that although feeding the hungry is their main goal, they are also going above and beyond with the other programs that they offer. Also, in order to better their work, the staff and volunteer members “partner with local Churches, Community Centers, and Boys and Girls Club of America” (sthproject) in order to help as many families and children as they can. The S Tracy Howard Project does however, pay their employees, which isn 't something that is often seen being done in charity work. Having said that, the average amount each employee receives a year is $4,376- which in total is $43,716 after paying all of their employees (findthecompany.com). However, $4,376 is a much lower compensation cost, whereas the median cost per employee in other nonprofit organizations in Flower Mound is $20,887 and $17,266 nationwide (findthecompany.com).

First, I would like to give my opinion of whether this book was worthwhile at the beginning of this book review. Because I believe this is one of the most moving books written today about the problem of hunger in America. I also believe that this book should be required reading for every "elected official" who has the power to end the needless tragedy of hunger in America. This is a very well-written, well-researched book based on real people with real stories not just about numbers, trends, stats, or theories.
In the land of the free and home of the brave, this great nation continues to see a change. The change spoken of is not one that bears fruit or gives to our own people. Instead the United States appears focused on helping other countries with aid financially as well as sustenance. Many authors have written about this recently and this paper will shed some light on why the United States should focus on its own people first and only then assist the rest of the world (Critical206). “If we can conquer space, we can conquer childhood hunger in our own nation” -- Buzz Aldrin.
The articles “The Return of American Hunger” by Ned Resnikoff and “Shift to ‘Food Insecurity’ Creates Startling New Picture of Hunger in America” by Tracie McMillan along with A Place at the Table, a documentary, all share the same premise, hunger in the United States. Although many Americans know to some effect of the food insecurity problem in the United States, they do not know the extent and some causes of food insecurity. Resnikoff explains some of the reasons behind the growing hunger rate by focusing his piece on how changes made to the SNAP program on federal and state levels made it more difficult for low income persons to receive aid. The main focus in McMillan's article is there was a rise in hunger because the terminology has changed and due to wages not rising with inflation. The film showcased many aspects of hunger, such as food banks, government subsidizing some farms while neglecting others, and cuts to SNAP.
In the foreword, Bridges states he and the political will are part of the problem of hidden hunger in America. He does not give us much information on what he was not doing before he decided to help. Bridges also states that we could help end this problem just as much as anyone else can, but he never furthers the thought after this. Bridges could inform us on what he meant when he was the problem and how we individual's reading this could help end this problem. We do not see ads on television telling us the people in our own country are starving. The politicians have so much power and if they are standing for what they believe in then most would think there would be no hunger in America. The politicians should be making sure that everyone
Starvation in America is heavily used when you also hear “donations” but have you actually sat down and looked into the problem? What causes it, and what we can actually do to help people? Is there really a way to stop people from starving?
“There are 16.2 million children that live in households that lack the means to get enough nutritious food on a regular basis. As a result, they struggle with hunger at some time during the year.” (Hungry Children Suffer) Child hunger prevents children from getting all the vitamins that they need to sustain a healthy life. Some people believe that parents spend money on other wants besides food for their children. Around 3.1 million children die each year because of poor nutrition, which is nearly half of the children population, could this be because of the government?
There will in fact be rules and regulations pertaining to the distribution of the food. I would like for this adventure to developed and maintained by the community for which it is going to benefit. The rules will be as follows:
Hunger in America is very important and dangerous. Hunger means that people are in need of
I would march for the people who don't have an education and that are facing hunger problems. Being able to do this will give the kids and adults that haven't received an education and that are facing hunger. I would be brave enough to fight for their rights and be more active to what's happening around the world. We are facing big problems and we are almost getting to the road where there is going to be true equality in our country. Some people are not being able to vote (certain people). We will need to come a long way to help the kids and adults who have suffered from hunger to their educational rights. Some specific people are not able to have a job just because of their race. People are still treating other people with no respect and
Hunger in the United States, and how it’s an important topic to write about and that everyone should know about. The hunger in America then and now, we have moved from efficient scavenging to conspicuous consumption and then back again. The estimated percentage of household waste about 22 percent millions of thousands approximately. Food waste has become a serious issue in our society in the last few that affected poor and rich countries as well. We live in a world where so many have no clue about the people in need of food. I feel like so many don’t show their kinder sides to those who need our help and can’t eat. Of course, there are a good proton of people out there who show kindness to those in need. Just think about everyone who is worrying
Although the United States government spends $176 billion on hunger programs every year, there are currently more than 46 million Americans going hungry every day. In the U.S. every county, state, or congressional district experiences some form of malnutrition and hunger. Right now there is a rapid increase in the number of hungry Americans and the issue is quickly becoming problematic. Today one in six Americans participate in one or more of the fifteen nutrition assistance programs funded by the government and provided by the USDA. Recently more people have begun to question what hunger really is, what all the programs actually do, and what their results are.
Some citizens of the United States believe that we, as a country, should concern ourselves more with the well being of our own citizens first. That the United States citizens should be our first and top priority above anyone else around the globe. I argue otherwise, in that the well being and economies around the world are all equally important and if we are able to help other countries, we should.
Food For The Poor (FFP) - Jamaica is the largest charity organization located on the island of Jamaica and its parent organization Food For The Poor Inc., located in Florida, USA, is the largest international relief and development organization in America. After reading the extensive “The New Face of Hunger” (Tracie McMillan), my eyes became more open to the overall issue of hunger, faced by many people today. In a few words, I was absolutely shocked by the true meaning and examples provided of what exactly food insecurity is. Honestly speaking, when I hear the word “hunger” I think of a human who has no food, living on the streets. “The New Face of hunger” brought to my attention that food insecurity is much more than simply having no food. In fact, “In 2006 the U.S. government replaced “hunger” with the term “food insecure” to describe any household where, sometime during the previous year, people didn’t have enough food to eat” (The New Face of Hunger). Not only was I able to see the harsh
Millions of people in the world went to bed hungry last night. The amount of food in the world is unevenly distributed and adequately produced to satisfy the needs of humanities growing population. The hunger issue the planet is faced with can be resolved with the conservation of excess food, the increased use of Genetically Modified Foods (GMFs) and the greater funding of global relief efforts.
