The 16-year-old bravely volunteered for her sister Prim in the Games, risking her chance of survival for her sisters. This shows great strength of character as “In District 12, where the word tribute is pretty much synonymous with the word corpse, volunteers are all but extinct,” implies that Katniss not only has a deep level of love for her sister, but also an extraordinary level of strength. This quote clearly highlights the main act of strength portrayed by Katniss as she is risking her life for someone else’s. From the very moment Katniss volunteered, she had absolutely no self-confidence and she straight away told herself “I can’t win. Prim must know that in her heart. The competition will be far beyond my abilities.” However, Katniss starts to grow in strength, throughout the games, although when the announcement that two tributes from the same district could win together, she had her main peak of strength. With her continuously growing strength, Katniss was able to win the Hunger Games, not just with her physical strength, but mental strength
An important idea that Katniss makes the audience think of is bravery. Every day since she was sixteen she has been going outside the wall to hunt for her family. When her father died and her mother slipped into deep depression she was the only one who could feed her family as her younger sister Prim was only seven. This bravery is shown
Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games is a dystopian novel about the adventures of Katniss Everdeen, who is forced to battle against other children in a fight-to-the-death tournament. Throughout the novel, Katniss appears to be saved by luck in many near death situations. She is fortunate when her backpack protects her from a knife and when she chooses a tree with a tracker jacker nest. Many believe Katniss survives because she has never-ending luck in the arena. This assumption may be true; however, the other tributes aid Katniss throughout the games. She becomes dependent on other people to make decisions easier for her. Luck does not play a role in Katniss’ survival because the other tributes actions save her in life-threatening situations.
In the film, The Hunger Games directed by Gary Ross shows the protagonist, Katniss Everdeen as a strong well-skilled District 12’s female tribute who carries hope along to survive in the arena among other tributes to rebel against an oppressive government control. Throughout the film we can see how Katniss gets motivated by her loved ones back at home as well as her District 12’s members. For instance, Katniss’s younger sister, Prim gives strength when she gives the mocking jay pin
In the case of Katniss Everdeen, who was introduced as a strong, resourceful, independent, and protective young woman, she is faced with the challenge of the Hunger Games. Instead of succumbing to the challenge, she magnifies her skills to conquer it; meanwhile, gaining a deeper understanding of the country she lives in and the people who govern it. Nevertheless, this is just the beginning of Katniss's journey, and it has given her credibility while also laying the foundation for the rebellious future that lies ahead of
Michael, I do concur with your statement that Katniss is a strong young woman; however, there are times throughout the novel that Katniss struggles to differentiate between her true self and the persona she created to secure her survival during the games. Even the quote you provided as evidence, “By the end of the session, I am no one at all” (Collins 143) she did know who she was by the end of the mock up session with Haymitch Abernathy. For instance, nowadays, many young adults use social media as an escape from their mundane reality. Most of millennials do not have the social skills necessary to get through life. For the most of their teenage year’s social media has inflated the reality of their lives, once they graduate high school and
In the novel “The Hunger Games” Suzanne Collins conveys the qualities of a hero through the main character Katniss Everdeen. The novel is based around a dystopian nation, in which is placed in Panem. Through which a boy and a girl from each district must take part in ‘The Hunger Games’ where they have to fight to the death, until there is one survivor. Katniss subsequently evolves as a significant hero portraying the heroic qualities such as selflessness, identity change and intelligence. The Hunger Games written by Suzanne Collins delineates that there are times when people believe that all hope is lost but only those who are strong will persevere through their darkest moments. Suzanne Collins portrays the theme throughout the novel with the main protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, as she struggles to endure her daily life and the annual Hunger Games. “We had to save you because you're the Mockingjay, Katniss, says Plutarch. While you live, the revolution lives” (Collins). Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games is a complex character who epitomizes the archetype of a hero, however, she also shatters the mold by rebelling against the capital and endangering her whole family. She starts out as a hero to her family, especially her sister, and then becomes the symbol of strength to everyone. Katniss sacrifices herself by volunteering to join the Hunger Games in place of her sister, it is a game of survival where a boy and a girl from each district are forced to fight the other members of other districts to the death. By going out of her ordinary world and preparing to join a game where her life could be taken, she fits right into the archetype of a hero. Her bow and arrow, the weapon that only she can wield, will be the only things to help her survive. Despite these heroic qualities, Katniss makes an erroneous decision and blunder mistakes that shows the reader the flip side of Katniss.
In addition, Suzanne Collins also demonstrates that Katniss is a good hero in the ‘Hunger Games’ through her inner strength and selfless acts. Through repetition we can see that Katniss has inner strength. This is evident through the quote, With one sweep of my arm, I push her behind me.“I volunteer!” I gasp. “I volunteer as tribute!” Katniss demonstrates that she has inner strength through repetition of the word volunteering, by stepping up putting her own
She volunteered to take her sister’s occupation as a tribute for the 74th Hunger Games not because she was attempting to be a heroine. However, this move was what catapulted her into various tiers of activism. Her climatic activism occurred in Mockingjay. Everything she went through led her to a place where she felt no option but to fight for equality, peace and love for her people. She battled for complete equality for all 13 districts of Panem, sacrificed herself as a whole for others’ safety, and in the resolution, she gave hope for the freedom to love. As the Hunger Games trilogy draws to close, Katniss finally embraces the tender future ahead. She might have felt like Martin Luther King Junior when he said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward. Free at last, Free at last, Thank God almighty, we are free at last.”

The Hunger Games, directed by Gary Ross is a movie about 24 tributes fighting to the death for the Hunger Games crown. The prize is riches, fame and freedom from ever having to physically fight in the arena again. It is a game of violence, ferocity, and blood, and only one tribute can win. Even though stories often have a Battle between Good and Evil, it is Katniss’s internal conflict confronting her own good and evil that portrays humanity with a longing for destruction, violent inclination, and sense of separation.
Katniss has an edge over many of the other tributes because she often lives not knowing if she is going to make it through the night. For years she has been responsible for the life or death of her family. She was devastated by the death of her father, though she recalls many of his fine talents and qualities. Throughout the training and the Games, she fights against feeling friendship for Peeta Mellark because she knows
