Today is Martin Luther King Day. Martin Luther King Junior was highly known for his activism during the Civil Rights Movement. In his final “Mountaintop” speech, he proclaimed, “The nation is sick. Trouble is in the land; confusion all around. That’s a strange statement. But I know, somehow, that only when it is dark enough can you see the stars. And I see God working … in a way that men, in some strange way, are responding. Something is happening in our world. The masses of people are rising up.”(1) Martin Luther King Junior was a symbol of hope for equality for the oppressed, peace for the nation, and most of all, love, for all people. She volunteered to take her sister’s occupation as a tribute for the 74th Hunger Games not because she was attempting to be a heroine. However, this move was what catapulted her into various tiers of activism. Her climatic activism occurred in Mockingjay. Everything she went through led her to a place where she felt no option but to fight for equality, peace and love for her people. She battled for complete equality for all 13 districts of Panem, sacrificed herself as a whole for others’ safety, and in the resolution, she gave hope for the freedom to love. As the Hunger Games trilogy draws to close, Katniss finally embraces the tender future ahead. She might have felt like Martin Luther King Junior when he said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward. Free at last, Free at last, Thank God almighty, we are free at last.”
In the film, The Hunger Games directed by Gary Ross shows the protagonist, Katniss Everdeen as a strong well-skilled District 12’s female tribute who carries hope along to survive in the arena among other tributes to rebel against an oppressive government control. In the novel “The Hunger Games” Suzanne Collins conveys the qualities of a hero through the main character Katniss Everdeen. The novel is based around a dystopian nation, in which is placed in Panem. Through which a boy and a girl from each district must take part in ‘The Hunger Games’ where they have to fight to the death, until there is one survivor. Katniss subsequently evolves as a significant hero portraying the heroic qualities such as selflessness, identity change and intelligence. Selflessness is shown as she puts others before herself, her identity changes as she has to put up a brave face, and intelligence is displayed as her strategies progress in the games.
“We had to save you because you're the Mockingjay, Katniss, says Plutarch. While you live, the revolution lives” (Collins). Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games is a complex character who epitomizes the archetype of a hero, however, she also shatters the mold by rebelling against the capital and endangering her whole family. She starts out as a hero to her family, especially her sister, and then becomes the symbol of strength to everyone. Katniss sacrifices herself by volunteering to join the Hunger Games in place of her sister, it is a game of survival where a boy and a girl from each district are forced to fight the other members of other districts to the death. By going out of her ordinary world and preparing to join a game where her life could be taken, she fits right into the archetype of a hero. Her bow and arrow, the weapon that only she can wield, will be the only things to help her survive. Despite these heroic qualities, Katniss makes an erroneous decision and blunder mistakes that shows the reader the flip side of Katniss.
For thousands of years, governments have been oppressing their people. Although their reasons for doing so may have been different, the outcomes were all the same: a revolt of the people. There are many examples of this throughout history, such as in the French Revolution and the American Revolution. The Hunger Games, a tale of a dystopian society filled with maltreatment by “The Capitol,” displays the path to insurrection triggered by the mounting cases of misery brought on by their government, that was attacking lower classes of people. By using common themes of oppression and rebellion found throughout history, The Hunger Games is a striking example of how repression by government will eventually lead to a revolt of the people.
Upon watching the movie “The Hunger Games” from a sociological perspective, I learned that many of the things that we have gone over in this online sociology course were incorporated heavily into what is perhaps one of my personal favorite movies of all time. Things like social status, culture, heritage, gender, and more were all used throughout the film in order to portray a realistic and believable setting for the viewer from a social perspective. Probably the most important sociological themes explored in this movie were the struggle to maintain a high ranking social status amongst surrounding humans, the pre-perceived idea of what you were and weren’t allowed to do legally speaking based on your district, and most importantly, how humans can ultimately make life or death decisions based on the value or benefit of a certain person to the group.
In The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins expresses two themes. The first one is that we can’t let the government use their power to treat, and use people like they want, they are oppressing them. “At one o’clock, we head of the square. Attendance is mandatory unless you are on deaths door. This evening, officials will come around and check to see if this is the case. I think The Hunger Games was supposed to make a political message. The movie has the wealthier people and political leaders in the capital, which would be the rich and political people in our society. I think the people in the districts represent the common people in our nation. The movie shows how the upper class does not have to deal with some of the hard times the lower classes have to go through. An example of this is all the extra food in the capital, but people in the districts were starving and struggling to find food.

In life there is always some sort of violence and there always seems to be a good and a bad side. The Hunger Games, directed by Gary Ross is a movie about 24 tributes fighting to the death for the Hunger Games crown. The prize is riches, fame and freedom from ever having to physically fight in the arena again. It is a game of violence, ferocity, and blood, and only one tribute can win. Even though stories often have a Battle between Good and Evil, it is Katniss’s internal conflict confronting her own good and evil that portrays humanity with a longing for destruction, violent inclination, and sense of separation.
