Sherlock Holmes and Watson are brought back in The Hound of Baskervilles written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to solve a mystery about a Supernatural Myth (Baskerville curse) Where a Hellhound is supposedly haunting the family.Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson have some bumps in the road but eventually, solve the baffling Baskerville curse. Specifically, the author conveys the theme “ Appearances can be deceiving” by having Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson make false assumptions about the characters and objects throughout the story.
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson were startled to see Dr. Mortimer and his appearance after making false assumptions about Dr. Mortimer by his walking stick. For Instance, “ the appearance of our visitor was a surprise to me since I had expected a typical country practitioner”. (15) Holmes and Watson studied Dr. Mortimer's stick trying to make predictions about Dr. Mortimer just by his walking stick. They were shocked …show more content…

Watson saw the hound for the first time they were flabbergasted. According to the book, it says “ A hound it was, an enormous coal-black hound, but not such a hound as mortal eyes have ever seen. Fire burst from its open mouth, its eyes glowed with a smoldering glare, its muzzle and hackles and dewlap were outlined in a flickering flame”. (216) Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson couldn’t believe their eyes because the hound appeared to be breathing fire and glowing, but later that discovered that it all was just a show and the owner of the dog had put phosphorus all over him to deceive people into thinking he was a Hellhound. The owner of the dog (Stapleton) starved the dog making it vicious, so the only reason it wanted to kill was that it was hungry. The appearance of the dog seemed to scare people even to death but when you get up close to the dog you realized the hound wasn’t as dreadful and horrific as people made it out to
