“No amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man will store up in his ghostly heart” (Fitzgerald 101). This quote represents The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, a summer story of love, murder, dangerous affairs, and the intoxicating appeal of money. Set in New York, readers are told a story from Nick Carraway, who is remembered this summer in 1922. He moves to West Egg, a place of new money and opportunities. It is here that he meets Jay Gatsby, a very rich man, surrounded by mysteries. Later, readers find out that Gatsby is trying to win back Daisy Buchanan, Nick’s cousin, and he needs Nick’s help. There is only one problem: Daisy is married to Tom Buchanan. He is a cruel and harsh man who has been cheating on Daisy since they …show more content…
He does not treat Daisy well, which ultimately leads to her being unhappy and going with Gatsby. Also, after the supper, Daisy goes outside with Nick to catch up with him. She is obviously upset, but Nick does not try to pry answers from her. Daisy says multiple downcast things, such as when she says, “Well, I’ve had a very bad time, Nick, and I’m pretty cynical about everything” (Fitzgerald 21). Based on recent events, it is to be assumed that Daisy is upset because of her rocky relationship with Tom. Because Tom and Daisy had a conflict about the call from Myrtle earlier in the chapter, readers can also assume that Tom’s affairs are one of the main factors contributing to the decline of their marriage. Clearly, Tom can be blamed for Daisy’s unhappiness. Between how he mistreats her and how he is actively cheating on her, Daisy has reason enough to be upset with him and their marriage. This leads her to see Gatsby as an option, which sets them down the path of his murder. Additionally, Myrtle’s death was also Tom’s fault, which also led to Gatsby’s death. After finding out about her affair, George traps Myrtle in the attic, determined to keep her there until they move
Daisy is greedy for the life of luxury. She wants more money and her priorities in life are skewed. Unaware of her selfish mentality, Daisy later kills Tom’s mistress. Tom informs everyone, including Wilson, that Gatsby’s car was the one that hit and killed Myrtle. Due to his endless love for Daisy, Gatsby takes the blame for Myrtle’s death in order to protect Daisy and
Nick Carraway is responsible for an affair between Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan, Tom Buchanan’s wife. Nick was having a conversation with Gatsby when he agreed to set the two characters together. He agreed to “call up daisy the next day and invite her over for tea. ”(FSF 87) Nick did not even think twice about the decision he made.
In The Great Gatsby, Tom Buchanan's actions lead to Gatsby's death. His affair with Myrtle Wilson and her lies to her husband, George Wilson, set off a chain of events that piled up and caused Gatsby's death. Tom not defending Gatsby while George is planning on killing him leads to Gatsby's death because Tom had George believe that Jay and Myrtle were having an affair. Tom's obsession with his social person also plays a main role, causing him to manipulate Gatsby and Daisy, ultimately making him responsible for the death of Jay Gatsby. Tom’s affair with Myrtle Wilson caused Myrtle to die because she thought Tom was driving the yellow car and ran out.
I am blaming Daisy because she is selfish, hurtful person, and Gatsby lover. She is the one that loved Gatsby but really loves Tom. Gatsby think Daisy is going to leave Tom, but Tom knows that Daisy is not going to leave him. Daisy think that she loves Gatsby, but Gatsby think that Daisy loves him. Daisy just wants Gatsby money and Gatsby wants Daisy to leave Tom and come stay with him.
Daisy is most prominent through the story, more so than the other girls. She is married to Tom Buchanan and is Nick’s cousin as well as Gatsby’s old lover who both still share mutual feelings of love for each other as she does not care much for Tom or the situation she is in. It is seen how little she cares when she responds to a question of
Nick confronts Gatsby about how he felt that Daisy didn’t enjoy his lavish party and how “He wanted nothing less of Daisy than that she should go to Tom and say: ‘I never loved you. " ’.. After she was free, they were to go back to Louisville and be married from her house- just as if it were five years ago” (109). Gatsby just wants Daisy to love him and needs Tom out of the picture. He thinks with all these fancy parties, it can make her love him.
Tom and Daisy were both careless for staying in a relationship together. Reasons for this include: Tom criticizing women for going out with the wrong people, but he is cheating on his wife Daisy, with Myrtle. Tom having this affair breaks trust in the relationship and can leave Daisy to feel betrayed. Tom’s carefree affair could be the main reason why she feels it's okay to disregard Tom and go off to mislead Gatsby. They don’t have trust built up to keep from seeing other people.
Later in the book, it details his obsession with Daisy Buchanan, whom he used to date several years ago before he got sent off to war. Gatsby lives in a fantasy by trying to make up for the several years he missed with her. Nick, his temporary neighbor, is Daisy s first cousin. Gatsby and
Gatsby not only changed himself but changed others close to him, one of which being Daisy. Daisy is not only Nick’s cousin, Gatsby’s crush, and Tom’s wife, but she played an important role in the book. When we first met Daisy she was selfish and inconsiderate, but throughout
Later that same day Gatsby and Daisy leave together to head back into the Eggs, and Daisy accidentally crashes right into Myrtle leaving her dead. Daisy does not tell Tom that she was the one who murdered her, instead she lets Gatsby take the blame. Fitzgerald writes, “They were careless people, Tom and Daisy - they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made…” (139.) Daisy and Tom didn’t care who they hurt, as long as their reputation and money still stood. They were selfish and only cared about themselves.
Since Gatsby desires Daisy, he changes his lifestyle for her. Before going to war Gatsby had met Daisy Buchanan, the reach, pretty girl, and fall in love with her. She didn’t know that he was a poor man and promised him to wait for him to come back after the war and marry him. Gatsby thought of Daisy all the time, he dreamed of their meeting. However, when he came back, he found out that she got married to another man, Tom Buchanan.
The novel ,The Great Gatsby, is mostly based around the past events of the life of Jay Gatsby. During the entire storyline up until his tragic death, Jay is chasing and yearning for his past. As I read, I found many symbols in the novel that can be related to the past Jay so desperately desires. The green light at the end of the dock, the extravagant parties thrown in hope, anything can be a symbol because Jay Gatsby lives for the past.
"They're a rotten crowd, I shouted across the lawn. You're worth the whole damn bunch put together"(186). One of the few words at the end of the story that Nick told Gatsby, he actually meant that was not a lie. This was also the last thing nick said to Gatsby before he left to his train.Gatsby was later killed before Nick had a chance to come back.. In the Great Gatsby.F. Scott Fitzgerald, demonstrates you can not relive in the past as the outcome will lead you towards an unknown place you never seen before, far from where you want to be.
2 QUOTES EACHHHHH The roaring twenties was a time filled with excitement, extravagance, and the desire for romance. Written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby is a novel that takes place in the nineteen-twenties. During this time period, it was a common mindset that one can only achieve happiness with money. This applied to most, but stood out in Jay Gatsby’s life.
So with that being said, he turns to making his money by illegal ways like bootlegging. Daisy is to blame for most of Gatsby’s problems because of the way she feels about money, she has affected other characters due to this issue. Gatsby has to be the most affected by Daisy and her decisions, like not waiting for him when he went to war. Daisy has Gatsby head over heels, no matter what she does, he cannot stop obsessing over her and will support her in everything she decides to do. Even to the end of the book where she kills Myrtle, Tom’s mistress with Gatsby’s car. Despite the fact that he knows that she killed a person, he still wants to take the blame for her. A little before she killed Myrtle, Tom finds out about the affair she was having with Gatsby. Tom confronts them about it and Gatsby comes clean to him and tells him what he thinks is true. Which is that Daisy loves him not Tom and she wants to leave him, yet daisy is speechless because at some point she did love Tom and is not so sure she wants to leave him. Gatsby ends up dead because of Daisy bright idea of killing someone and her husband Tom blames it on Gatsby knowing that Wilson was going to kill him. This shows the type of person Daisy is, so she has made many decisions in her past that eventually came to hunt many others in the present till the end of the book her
