The Great Gatsby is a story of a man who has almost everything, Money, Huge house, but he is missing one thing, his true love, Daisy. He bought a huge mansion in west egg just to be across the bay from Daisy who lives in east egg. The central theme in the Great Gatsby is that you cannot have everything no matter how rich you are.. In the Great Gatsby, Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald shows many different sides of the complicated character Jay Gatsby, some good and some bad. While Gatsby shows many different sides of him, the sides that are most prevalent are his traits of having a complicated history based on relationships or …show more content…
Therefore, Gatsby is a complex character because he has a complicated history based on relationships or actions Another way Gatsby is a complicated character is because he may not always be reliable or trustworthy. This is shown by Fitzgerald many times in the text. For example, he doesn't sound the most credible or convincing at times. A notable example of this trait is when Nick and Gatsby are driving to the Plaza Hotel and they are talking and Nick asked, “What part of the Middle West? Gatsby replied “San Francisco” Nick thought “His voice was solemn, as if the sudden memory still haunted him, for a moment I thought he was pulling my leg”(65). This quotes shows that Gatsby may not be the most reliable person, and he may not be from the midwest or San Francisco because they are totally different places. This quote also exposes Nicks suspicion to what he is telling the truth about and what he is lying about. Another Example of Gatsby not being the most reliable or trustworthy is when Nick is with Gatsby and Gatsby says, “‘I was brought up in American and educated at Oxford, because my ancestors have been educated there for many years’” (65). Nick thinks “he hurried the phrase ‘educated at Oxford.’ Or swallowed it, or choked on it, as it if had bothered him before, and with his doubt, his statement fell to pieces” (65). This quote is a very important piece of evidence into Gatsby’s past, Because if he lied about going to Oxford, he could have lied about anything else.
In, “The Great Gatsby”, while he wrote the novel he added similarity about his life from a point of view of Gatsby and Nick. During the book Gatsby was the most similar character to compare to Fitzgerald life. During the book we found out that Gatsby had left to served in World War 1. Gatsby had also went to a college called Oggsford. Later towards the book he had dropped out of Oggsford. Gatsby had fell in love with Daisy. Gatsby strived to become successful in his life. Gatsby came from a family who were not successful, and poor. He goes on to run away from
He finally was able to see the luxury that is known as Gatsby’s mansion. In literature, geography can be much more than just humans occupying a space, “it can be revelatory of virtually any element in the work. Theme? Sure. Symbol? No problem (p.174)”. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald takes time describing the mansion that we long to read about. As the story unfolds, however, the reader learns more and more about Gatsby’s personality and his life story. Everything he has done in his adult life has been with the sole purpose of fulfilling an unrealistic dream, to recapture the past. Gatsby is in many ways, as the title suggests, great, but when looking at him, some of the things he stands for may not be so admirable. Foster mentions how “geography can also define or develop a character (p173)”, which is what occurred to Gatsby. He fell in love with a rich girl, Daisy, and was ashamed of his financial background, therefor lying. He went off to the army and returned, attending Oxford, so he can make something of himself. While he was at school, Daisy married Tom. Fitzgerald finally introduces Gatsby with dialogue in the third chapter where he has a conversation with Jordan and Nick during the party.
Gatsby is a symbolic figure created by James Gatz; an idea of who he wanted to become to please himself and fill his incompleteness. Freud said the symbolic was an “idea of the self that depends on an idea of the loss of the self because we cannot recognize selfhood unless we compare it to its absence” (Parker. 140). James Gatz’ absences come primarily from his low self-esteem, insecurities, and regression.

In Fitzgerald’s, The Great Gatsby, characters deceive others throughout the entire book by living an illusion or a lie. The citizens of East and West egg use each other through their deceptive ways. However, more specifically, Gatsby is the key character of deception, having no respect for himself of the people surrounding him. Throughout the book, the reader can see the figurative and literal aspects of Gatsby’s life along with how it came to a sudden end because of his previous lies. The book also helps the readers see how he deceives every character throughout the continuous lies.
Gatsby tells his story of being an Oxford man, but nothing before that. His story leaves his early life open to many different interpretations by many different people. There are only few people who know the man he truly is, but his life is still a mystery for many people that he meets. Gatsby lies about his life to protect his personal safety. Jay Gatsby is a persona created by James Gatz after becoming a mentee for Dan Cody. Very few people know of Gatsby’s true life, Nick included. Gatsby does this to protect himself. He’s worked extremely hard to erase his past, which consisted of him working on a farm in North Dakota, then having to work as a janitor to get through College. Gatsby has lied to everyone he’s met, it’s as if the tables have turned and what is fake has become the truth, and the truth has become a

In the beginning of this novel everyone seems to know, or at least have heard, about Gatsby. He is talked about a lot and it is manly in a good way. Gatsby appears to be a very powerful person who also has a lot of respect from people. He has a very strange and kind of mysterious personality. For example when he has his party’s, usually on
First of all, in the novel Gatsby lies throughout the whole story to his peers about himself such as: where he got his money from, where he went to school, and even what his real name is. Moreover, in the novel Gatsby’s past affects him in a negative way because he was not able to let go and move on from Daisy nor did his attitudes no values change. For example, F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote Gatsby saying “The past well, that you can always repeat” this depicts
People come from all around to attend his house parties and he is always the center of attention. When the narrator peels back the first layer of Gatsby’s character, he appears much more complicated. He comes from a poor background and committed crimes to receive wealth. His character is problematic
Gatsby is a mystery, a present that is slowly unwrapped as the book progresses until finally you see what’s inside. Fitzgerald delays the unwrapping of the mystery that is Gatsby until quite late into the book. In the beginning of the book all the reader knows about Gatsby are the rumors they hear of him The first things the reader hears of him are of embellished stories – that he is “nephew to von Hindenburg and second cousin to the devil” or “he’s a nephew or a cousin of Kaiser Wilhelm’s”. – that leave you wondering who exactly this man is . The
As a person who came from nothing, Gatsby became someone he did not even recognize in the end. He came from a family in poverty. Fitzgerald shows the irony in how he changed his name and begins a whole new life not wanting anyone to know who he really was. This is what society wants, they want you to be someone who you yourself, cannot even recognize. The view of Gatsby seems to be someone who lost himself along the way. He served his country knowingly that he would put his life in jeopardy but he never wanted anything else but have what he never did, the money. Gatsby always only worried about what others would think and the reactions he would get out of people who never even knew him. He got amazing reactions out of everyone and they all wanted to know the great Gatsby because he was like a secretive Godly figure to these people. He had the amazing parties, the huge house, the money, and the trips of a lifetime. The only thing he did not have were the people.
A main event in The Great Gatsby occurred at the end when Gatsby was found dead in his pool at his luxurious mansion. However, his murder was not solely the responsibility of the person who committed the crime. Many characters in the novel contributed to Gatsby’s final downfall into the pool. The responsibility of Gatsby’s murder was divided between the obvious killer, the sly betrayer, the guilty initiator, and the dead man himself.
Nick Carraway in the novel The Great Gatsby plays a significant part in the story and the timeline. Without Nick there wouldn’t be a story to follow. Nick plays both objective commentator and is also apart of the action. This narration style does work in some situations but it also doesn’t work for a number of reasons. For one, Nick doesn’t play the objective commentator in many situations throughout the novel. Also, Nick wasn’t always involved or around some situations to narrate which means some parts are inaccurate. This style of narration can work because Nick had just met everyone and his perception of THE events cannot be biased.
