Many authors have written novels in which characters are misled by another, either through love or for the simple act of lying to protect someone’s identity. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby does both to Nick and Daisy, along with everyone else he’s met. Gatsby lies to Daisy about his death, and to everyone else about who he was before he met them. Most of Gatsby’s relationships are based on lies, and he’s lied so much that he believes he is instead telling the truth. Before Daisy meets and marries Tom Buchanan, she has an affair with Gatsby, who has to leave to serve the military. While he is away, Daisy waits for him to return, until she receives a telegram on her wedding day from Gatsby. Although the scene in the book is full of ambiguities, it is safe for the reader to assume that Gatsby had broken her heart right then. All of those years before Gatsby had been reunited with Daisy were years where Daisy had believed that she had truly messed up something important in her life. Gatsby tells his story of being an Oxford man, but nothing before that. His story leaves his early life open to many different interpretations by many different people. There are only few people who know the man he truly is, but his life is still a mystery for many people that he meets. Gatsby lies about his life to protect his personal safety. Jay Gatsby is a persona created by James Gatz after becoming a mentee for Dan Cody. Very few people know of Gatsby’s true life, Nick included. Gatsby does this to protect himself. He’s worked extremely hard to erase his past, which consisted of him working on a farm in North Dakota, then having to work as a janitor to get through College.
