Federal Reserve Chair, Janet Yellen, spoke at the Economic Club of New York yesterday. As a result of this speech, the stock market jumped and the dollar depreciated. Chelsey Dulaney of the Wall Street Journal reported that, "The WSJ Dollar Index, which measures the buck against a basket of 16 currencies, fell 0.4% to 86.65. The euro rose 0.3% to $1.13295." The key part of Janet Yellen's speech that triggered the dollar depreciation was when she said:
During the Great Depression and between 1926 and 1933, housewives setup self-help groups to aid their locals in the community who were greatly affected by the Depression because they were no longer able to afford basic necessities- food, clothes, and shelter. The housewives played was a step up from traditional gender roles. They no longer passive, waiting for the men to take care of it, and instead were proactive leaders who worked side by side with men. They took leadership while organizing strikes, barter exchanges, and demanding what they wanted from businesses and the government. This showed others that women are no longer the traditional stereotype, where their only duty was to stay at home and cook, clean, and take care of the kids, and rather be leaders outside the house.
The child isn't growing at a normal rate, which means that he will be "released" if he doesn't begin to grow the way he is supposed to. For Jonas Gabriel is a symbol of hope, and starting over. Because Gabe is just a baby and has not conformed to the rules of this society Jonas can show him the memories that he receives, and he does so because he feels that the baby could be a new beginning. All of the memories of the past that Jonas receives, show him how the society that he lives in is constricting to the people. He is genuinely scared of what could happen if he or Gabe stays where they are. This shows that although Jonas wouldn't want to break the rules, he feels the need to protect baby Gabe, and would go to any lengths necessary to do
In the novel, The Giver written by Lois Lowry, Jonas, The Receiver, carries the memories of the world. Jonas quickly realizes that holding the memories is quite the burden to bead. People in the community should be able to own their own memories because the community would become a better place, Jonas and The Giver would have less stress, and citizens would become stronger.
Jonas and the Giver plans to change the Community so that everybody can have the memories. They decide that at midnight, Jonas will leave the Community with Gabriel and go elsewhere. "Memories are forever." ( Pg. 144) All the memories that had been transmitted to Jonas will be given to all the citizens. Memories of hate, war, love, family, fun, joy, and more. Jonas is hoping that Gabriel will be safe, neither of the two will starve, and that the Community will be able to experience
Jonas the main character in The Giver, could be best described as caring and adventurous. Jonas’ caring was the main factor to his success at the Receiver of Memories. He was caring to The Giver by taking the bad memories from him when he was really weak, like the war, and sunburn. Before Jonas was running away his dad said they were going to release Jape so he took Jape with him so he could live. When Jape and Jonas were running away, Jonas gave all of his warm memories to Jape so he could stay warm. Jonas’ adventurous was the main
Jonas receives memories of color, something that is absent from his community. He realizes how absent his community really is. Jonas hurts inside to tell people in his community what they are missing. The only person that he can really open up to is The Giver. They grew really close, and it became like a grandfather, grandchild relationship.
The Giver knows that the burden of memory is too much for Jonas to bear, so he and Jonas plan Jonas’ escape. In the escape, The Giver plans to leave Jonas with memories of courage and strength so that he can make his journey to freedom. The plan changes when Jonas finds that Gabriel, an infant the family had been caring for was going to be “released” the next morning. Upon hearing the news, Jonas takes Gabriel and flees The Community. The book ends with Jonas hearing music, which symbolizes finding his
Jonas wanted to live a different life. In his journey, Jonas travels with Gabriel, the child that was being nurtured by his family. He needed to saved him from being “released”. Together they faced danger and fear but it was just the beginning of a new life in the land of Elsewhere.
Jonas goes through a lot while receiving the memories from The Giver. He first gets happy memories such as the sled, but then The Giver has to give him painful memories. He first receives the memory of physical pain from sunburn (Lowry 86). The pain is minimal compared to the memory of a broken leg (Lowry 109) and an injured arm during a war. During the war memory, he sees death (Lowry 119, 121). He experiences grief when he receives the memory the shot elephant (Lowry 100). Most haunting of all are the memories of the release of old and the part his father plays in the release of new born (Lowry 150). These trials at first horrify Jonas but he learns to deal with the
