“People ask the difference between a leader and a boss. The leader leads and the boss drives”- Theodore Roosevelt. What does it mean to be a leader? What defines a good leader? History has taught us many things about leadership. Good Leadership can be the difference between winning a war and losing a war. Even in everyday life, a good leader is capable of achieving much greater things than a normal person. But leadership is a powerful tool that can be used both for the good of mankind and its downfall.
Leadership is the ability of an individual or and organisation, to influence other individuals and its team to achieve a desired outcome. Influence is a very under-rated aspect of leadership. No individual would follow a person who does not have

The ability to self-reflect is as crucial as any. A leader should always evaluate himself and his values time to time. This make him more aware of his strengths and weaknesses and allows him to adapt to any scenario. Being able to reflect enable leader to remember past experiences and gain quality insights into themselves. This will aid the decision-making process a leader goes through.
The next value that Harry Jensen Kramer Jr talk about is the need for balance. A leader may have his own set of values and opinions of a situation. But it should not obstruct his ability to see the same situation from another point of view. A good leader accepts that there are always different perspective to consider in a given situation. Many leaders tend to be headstrong in their mind set that only their opinion matters. Anyone who does not believe in his opinion is just challenging his authority. This is a clear case of an ego issue. The open-mindedness opens room for god communication between the leader and his followers. This develops trust and respect within an organisation. But it is also necessary to filter out the good opinions from the bad ones. As a leader, you must decide which is important for the organisation and not take all suggestion without due thought just to appease the teams. Doing that makes you the follower and it you will always lose credibility as a
Leadership is the ability to inspire and focus members on a common goal, whether short term or long term and have the same vision. Leadership is more than telling or ordering, but having members believe and want to follow the same path as you. It’s a commitment to your people built on trust and respect. Many leaders shaped my personal leadership philosophy, to include several negative and positive experiences. Negative experiences from poor leaders and lessons learned on my part have uniquely shaped this vision. Difficult to be a good follower when your leader lacks competency, integrity, and your trust. If a leader takes credit for work other than their own, or forces and ideology onto others, but does not follow it themselves; these negative influences damage the trust and respect required by all leaders. However, positive experiences can also have a career lasting impact. A leader who inspires through personal actions and convictions can change how an entire unit operates without ever saying a word.
Leadership is all about influence. It is motivating and inspiring followers to engage in a vision. Leadership brings together the
Leadership is “the fusion of heart and mind, selfless action, encourage betterment of others, and to make a difference. It is the process of influencing
There are many ways to define leadership, but perhaps the most laconic as well as accurate definition is presented in Peter G. Northouse's Leadership: Theory and Practice book (Northouse, 2013, p.5): "Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal". Individuals, engaged in leadership, use influence to solve challenges, which the groups under their leadership face, in order to succeed in their common goals.
According to the GLOBE Project (House and Hanges, 2004, p15), leadership is the ability of an individual to influence, motivate and enable others to contribute toward the effectiveness and success
Leadership is a complex process by which a person influences others to accomplish a mission, task, or objective and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent. Leadership, as a process, shapes the goals of a group or organization, motivates behavior toward the achievement of those goals, and helps define group or organizational culture. It is primarily a process of influence. Leadership is a dynamic or changing process in the
There are lots of definitions and interpretations for the term LEADERSHIP. One is “A relationship through which one person influences the behaviour or actions of other people” (Mullins, L.J. 2002, Management and Organisational Behaviour, 6th Edition, FT Publishing, p904). Another popular definition would be, “the process of influencing an organization or groups within an organization in its efforts towards achieving a goal” (Johnson, Scholes & Whittington, 2005, Exploring Corporate Strategy, 7th Edition, FT Prentice Hall, p.519)
Leadership is the process of influencing individuals or a group of individuals by providing purpose, direction with the support of others, and motivating those individuals with the purpose of accomplishing a certain obligation which is helpful to all individual that is involved.
Leadership is an influence relationship between leaders and followers who intend real changes and outcomes that reflect their shared purposes.
Leadership is ability to influence others to perform tasks (Benowitz, A.E. 2001). It is the function or activity that an individual performs. This definition implies that leadership is an influential process. In other words leadership is the notion that leaders are individuals who facilitate the movement of a group of people toward a common or shared goal. Therefore, leadership is an important part of management and it produces change in the operation of an organisation.
Leadership is comprised of three components: (1) a bi-directional process during which a transaction occurs between the leader and the follower; (2) influence, the affect the leader has on followers; and (3) it occurs in groups of individuals focused on achieving a common objective or task (Northouse, 2013; Lussier & Achua, 2013). Therefore, a concise definition of leadership according to Northouse is, “a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal” (Northouse, 2013, p. 5). The differentiation between leadership and management is the former establishes direction, aligns people, provides motivation and inspiration (Northouse, 2013). Influence, when coupled with power provides a moving force.
Leadership is the personal capability of influencing a group of people to initiate a goal and to motivate them to work towards achieving that goal (“Leadership,” 2010). It is important to distinguish between leadership and authority for that, authority does not always indicate a person being in a leadership position. A leader can be in any organizational position, whether high or low, and still have the power to guide others in accordance to a collective vision.
There are many definitions of leadership even though these definitions are merely a change of words (Northouse, 2016). However, the definition that covers most examples of leadership is the ability to influence a team in such a way that the team will follow orders and see the vision for success the leader sees (Northouse, 2016). However, some of the characteristics that allow a follower to lead vary from person to person. (Storsletten, V., & Jakobsen, O). When a Leader rises to power, factors exist based on the environment of the individual, such as when the son of the King eventually takes the throne (Northouse, 2016).
Leadership is a process that occurs between a leader and another individual; between the leader and a group. Or between a leader and an organization, on a community, or a society; and that influences others, often by inspiring enlivening, and engaging others to participate in the achievement of goals. Leadership is a subtle art and skill. It is based on inherent qualities of the individual and developed over time, through life events and experiences that range from significant to life altering. Leadership involves influencing the attitudes, beliefs, behaviors, and feelings of other people. The process of leadership involves the leader and the following in an interaction. This implies that leadership is a reciprocal relationship.
Leadership, as u can easily know the meaning from the word. It is basically a process where a person influences others to ensure that they reach their goals, directs the organization towards success. However, it also depends on how effective the leader is and on the followers’ interests. It can basically be termed as teamwork, where an individual (a leader) influences a group of people to make sure that they achieve the goal.
