Love takes many forms. The love that Eddie and Marguerite shared was a deep, loyal one. They fell in love as teenagers, and that loved remained strong throughout their lives. They both remained faithful during Eddie’s time in the war, even when Eddie was held captive for several months. Marguerite remained by Eddie’s side as he recovered, and was a constant positive influence throughout Eddie’s life. Eddie also remained loyal to Marguerite while she was sick. Although they never had children, they had a love that never died. Marguerite stated that she felt Eddie’s love even in heaven.
Upon his arrival in heaven, Eddie begins to run around. He runs and frolics and feels free, overcome with a child-like sense of wonder and energy, but

This one act displays and connects to all of the themes--heaven, sacrifice, and reconciliation. Eddie sacrificed himself to save the girl, and because of this, Eddie was sent on a journey to heaven. On this journey, Eddie realizes the importance of forgiveness, and he must forgive and be forgiven in order to move on. If Eddie was in purgatory, the story would change in only one way: the title would be “The Five People You Meet in Purgatory”. Personally, I think the story makes more sense if Eddie is in purgatory. The story would then show his journey towards achieving a state of perfection in order to enter heaven. All the lessons Eddie learns would be necessary teachings for him to live in communion with Christ. The end of the movie, when Eddie finds himself at Ruby Pier, after being lead through the water by Tala (which would symbolize his re-birth), would be representative of the final stage of Purgatory and the first stage of heaven, where Eddie can realize the effect he had on people in his life.
The first person Eddie meets in heaven is the Blue Man. The Blue Man was part of the freak show at Ruby Pier. His heaven is Ruby Pier, where he felt truly at home. He teaches Eddie the importance of listening. He also explains that there are no “random acts”, that everyone and every action is connected in some way, and that fairness plays no role in life. “If it did, no good person would ever die so
He lost his hat, the one that he got from someone at his birthday party. He got offended by Mickey, giving him a punch on the arm. From this, the readers can understand that MIckey, the alcoholic Irishman, was not a good soul to Eddie. Mickey will probably became a part of a negative time period during Eddie’s life, and this could be the reason why the narrator introduced MIckey in this way not completely positive. Thirdly, “She puts his hat back on his head. Later, she will walk him along the pier, perhaps take him on an elephant ride, or watch the fishermen pull in their evening nets, the fish flipping like shiny, wet coins. She will hold his hand and tell him God is proud of him for being a good boy on his birthday, and that will make the world feel right-side up again” (Albom 25) In a lot of moments we read about Eddie, how he suffered much pain and misconstrued events throughout his life on earth: Eddie was searching for some kind of peace within himself, which he never found. However, here the love of the mom for his kid is shown, and the reader can definitely understand that Eddie’s mom cared deeply for Eddie and his brother, Joe, offering her sons a nurturing alternative to their abusive, alcoholic
Eddie is introduced as a moral man with ethics and principles. Miller showed that at the beginning of the play, Eddie tells the story of a young boy who ratted on immigrant relatives staying in his home and warn Catherine that she must be absolutely silent about Marco and Rodolpho. Moreover, there was a discussion between Eddie and Beatrice; where Beatrice is afraid of her immigrant cousins being caught. Therefore, Eddie told her: “listen if everybody keeps his mouth shut, nothing can happen. They’ll pay for their board.”(Miller, 1955, p.9).Later in the story, Eddie revealed a different identity .He was blinded with passion to the point of immorality. When he knew about Catherine falling in love with Rodolpho, he told Alfieri that he is going to call the immigration so he can keep Catherine just for him. Even though he knew that he is going to suffer for calling immigration, but does so anyway .Eddie: “Give me the number if the Immigration Bureau.”(Miller, 1955, p.61).To sum up, Miller displayed identity that could be moral with ethics and turns to be and identity that is blinded with
Out of the five people Eddie meets in heaven, Ruby clarifies the theme the best. Ruby shows that she is connected to everyone who has ever been too Ruby Pier. She believes the if Ruby Pier had never been built, all the people connected to it would be in a better place. Ruby and Eddie had never meet before heaven and yet they are connected. Without Ruby, Ruby Pier would have never been created. Without the pier, Eddie’s life would have taken a different turn. It is interesting to see that people you have never met can have the biggest impact on your life.
While in heaven, Eddie first learns how his time in the military impacted the lives of his unit and his captain. He had immensely affected whether they had lived or died during their time as prisoners of war. Due to his quick thinking, Eddie was able to construct a diversion that gave him and his men an escape route. Eddie used his juggling skills to distract the guards resulting in their flee. Without Eddie’s assistance the men would most likely not have escaped. Unfortunately, their jailbreak also led up to the captain’s death. When the men were rushing out of the burning camp, Eddie believed he saw a person in the fire. He made several attempts to save whoever was still in the flames. This gave the captain no choice but to shoot his leg and then rush him to a nearby medical
However, he was still so nervous that he had almost hit Eddie. As a result, he felt dizzy and his head fell for a moment, causing his car to almost collide with another. He skids down the street and pulls into an alley and ends up hitting a truck; no one found him in the alley until he had already died. The second person Eddie meets in heaven is his former Captain.
In the film, Edward explores the theme of love in many different aspects of life. It was clear that the day when Peg kindly brought home Edward to the conventional village, she also brought down a deeper and more meaningful understanding of love. For all Edwards’ life, he had only known one person, his creator, and even though he was not all human, the bond of family was something that they had, and the most precious thing he lost when his creator "never woke up". Therefore, when he had nothing left but his own entertainment Edward turned to art instead, beautifully caring for his garden around the dark and ghostly mansion. After he had been brought down to the community, he developed a love for Peg's family who cared for him. He grew to have a great love for Kim, who adored Edwards individuality and kind heart above Jim, urging him away after he became sickly jealous of the couples’ love. Kim exclaiming, "Jim I don’t love you anymore I just want you to go, just go!" despite this Jim's jealousy resulted in his death. Edward found happiness in the simplest of things, such as gardening, ice-sculpting, cutting hair and the company of the people around him and
At the start of the book Ed is simply existing. He’s not living, “I cook. I eat. I wash but rarely iron. I live in the past and believe that Cindy Crawford is by far the best supermodel. That’s my life.” (p.20) This is a sentence that I feel really shows who Ed is at the beginning. He more or less does the same thing every day in sort of a monotone way. Throughout the cards and difficulties that Ed goes through, we really start to see a person emerging out of Ed. We see someone who is feeling and hoping and living. “In a flood inside me....three minutes straight.” (pg.351) This change that we see in Ed happens progressively. Each card and task that is given to Ed brings out something in him that in the beginning we didn’t see often.
Eddie is struggling to maintain dominance. In Eddie's view, he has just been monumentally disrespected. His power has been challenged. So, what does he do? He forces his niece to kiss him. Forcing himself on his niece, he symbolically asserts his power over her.
Eddie at the beginning of the story was hopeful that his career would succeed.Everything started going well for him, people said he played from the heart. He was starting to show that he had money, he got a leather jacket and and wore a chain. He made 1 record that went to the charts. When he went to hollywood he met a girl immediately and moved in with her. Not only that she taught him how to play the guitar which started his music career.Eddie started to become successful however when the A&R man told him that he doesn't hear a single. His music career was basically over, he had no idea what to do, he was confused. He was lost, he had no career when his A&R man fired him, he is “a rebel without a
For instance, the 1st person that Eddie meets in heaven is the Blue Man. He worked at the freak show on Ruby Pier due to his rare skin color. It turns out, Eddie is the reason why the Blue Man died. To go more in depth, one day Eddie and his friends were tossing a baseball around and it rolled into the middle of the street. Eddie, only a child at the time, sprints after the ball going directly into the busy road.
a young woman “…You still walk around in front of him in your slip …”
In The Five People You Meet in Heaven a novel by Mitch Albom Eddie changes his perspective drastically from the beginning of the story to the end. In the beginning, Eddie didn’t understand a lot of what happened in his life. He didn’t know if he saved Annie or Amy from the rollercoaster. He doesn’t know his father's last words, or if he really saw someone in the barn that he burnt down.
I have always thrived to work toward perfection, wanting to achieve a life of wealth and prosperity; but what I have come to realise in my present age is that this ideal is impossible. Wealth and prosperity; they are words with infinite meaning; to one mind wealth and prosperity, is what poverty is to another. This is the problem with mankind; we cannot achieve perfection as our minds evolve to redefine it. The Five People You Meet in Heaven goes to communicate this exact conflict of the impossibility of perfection, due to the mind's constant modification of what perfection is, and I believe that it is an accurate representation of life. Before his death Eddie goes about his dull routine “as if all the days in the world were still to come” (Albom 4); I believe this refers to him expecting a life of wonder, and perfection after death. It is
At the beginning of the play, Eddie is portrayed as a sensible and smart character. Eddie and the girls (Catherine and Beatrice) all have a requited respect for each other – Beatrice: “Mmm! You’re an angel! God’ll bless you” – and there are no problems as such, even when the immigrants first come. He is also respected by the community – Alfieri: “He was good a man as he had to be in life that was.” But this dominant respect that he gains is what he is very used to and the slight changes where Catherine finds another man in her life and Beatrice also looks after the two immigrants (Rodolpho and Marco) effects Eddie hugely. The respect that he becomes used to is now shared by the women in his life between the men in his house and he craves for more attention. This can be considered one of his flaws that lead to his downfall. He is also shown caring for Catherine in the beginning of the play. He can be seen as a normal uncle or father – Beatrice: “She’s got a job.” Eddie: “What job? She’s gonna finish school.” He is also very proud of Catherine – “Sure she’s the best… You look like a
The relationship between Eddie and Beatrice changes in a number of ways throughout the play. At the beginning, they appear to have a loving relationship “You’re an angel!”. Soon, however, the relationship’s shiny and happy exterior begins to crack as Beatrice asks “when am I going to be a wife again?”. This quote suggests that Beatrice knows that Eddie’s feelings are straying elsewhere. She also mentions that “it’s been three months”. Eddie takes this as an insult to his masculinity and quiets her, telling her “I got nothin’ to say about it!” This short scene shows the lack of communication going on between the couple. The ill-fated marriage creates a sense of tragedy as, once again, Eddie does not realise the pain and suffering he is imposing on others, in this case his wife. We understand that Beatrice needs Eddie more than Eddie needs her throughout most of the play, until the very last moments when Eddie calls out 'My B!' and Beatrice replies 'Yes, yes!' before her husband dies in her arms. The rapid, dramatic and tragic interaction between the two shows Eddie ask for forgiveness and Beatrice grant him it. Like in many tragedy, the protagonist realises his mistake too
