While the music industry is blaming the decline of music sales on people who download free music- the real blame should be placed on MTV and BET. Yes! MTV and BET have ruined the music business. These two "music" television networks were created as a way for consumers to enhance their music experience. Now, if your turn the channel to MTV or BET, I guarantee you won't see any music videos. As a matter of fact, you probably won't see anything related to music either. Today, reality television, sitcoms, movies, and dramas rule these networks. The days of Total Request Live (MTV), Yo! MTV Raps, Club MTV, 106 & Park (BET), Rap City (BET), and Video Soul (BET), are long gone. While these networks blame low ratings for the reason why they cut these programs, I don't believe this to be true. Let's be real MTV and BET, you cut these programs because the executives realized they could make more money by creating programs like The Real …show more content…
Iconic legends like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Bon Jovi, Prince, Def Leppard, and Guns N' Roses built MTV. Music fanatics like myself used to run home from school, just so we could witness a Michael Jackson music video. MTV is the reason I listen to all genres of music including Rock, Hip-Hop, Pop, and R&B. BET was so instrumental in making sure R&B artists were recognized and respected. If it wasn't for BET, legendary musicians like Patti LaBelle, Luther Vandross, Anita Baker, and New Edition may have gone unnoticed by the world. MTV and BET were important factors in the music business- I just wish the networks understood how essential they are in this battle to get music back to its dominance. Music deserves to be played/viewed on the major MTV and BET channels- not the affiliate MTV and BET channels that most people don't have access to. Television is a vital platform, and artists need that platform in order to help promote their
MTV also shapes the customer culture, as consumers starting to get used to the fact that it is not the song that the performance sells, and that there is more to the song than music itself. MTV's live concert broadcast was also a huge promotion breakthrough for the artists as well, as it broadcasted not only videos of recorded music, but also live music on television. All in all, MTV did bring a huge impact on both publicity and sales to their record.
The entertainment industry kept growing for years and as the business grew, the competition also increased. There has also been an increase in the sales of music online. Selling online made it cheaper for customers and as a result many preferred to buy them online rather than going to the stores and buying music. Secondly, there has been an increase in illegal digital downloading; young people tend to download music of various formats which are easily available from the internet. This has lead to
MTV, formally known as Music Television, is one of the most viewed networks on television today. Roughly thirty-three years old, it has changed the American culture drastically in more than just one way. Specifically targeting teens and young adults, the MTV network provides all of the most up to date gossip on celebrities, highlights the latest fashion trends, promotes versified lifestyles, and defines the music industry of our generation. However, this so-called “idolized network” has not always been this way. The American culture has been affected by MTV through the creation of the network, the transformation from simply just music television to inappropriate reality shows, and the promotion of inappropriate content.
The creation of TV stations dedicated to music helped usher in the transformation of the way people enjoyed their favorite bands, singers, and songs. MTV became a place where anyone could potentially become the next star and it was a place where many stars who are still famous today got their first
Since its conception, hip hop has been a very necessary and influential art form in the way that it gives a voice to people who would normally not have one. The fact that it was often the sole voice for a marginalized community meant that the genre has often shouldered the “burden of being a genuine political force.” Hip hop’s role in addressing the concerns of urban Black Americans has led people to refer to it as “CNN for Black people.” However, in recent times, the commercialization of the genre (and growing popularity with white audiences) has generated a lot of criticism from many who feel that the essence of hip hop is being destroyed and it does not have as much of a meaningful effect on dispossessed Black youth as it used to have.
Mel Karmazin noted: “Every radio comes equipped with an on/off switch.” Not to say that radio isn’t still a valid contender, but times have changed since our parents listened to Top 40 as their primary means of audio enjoyment. Entertainment payola is relatively harmless nowadays, wherein the past it could exert considerable influence (threatening moral creativity/stifling economic components) the Digital Age has seem the rise of consumer choice, and buying power. Fundamentally if no one likes the music, no one will listen, and stations only hurt themselves when they alienate
MTV can be defined as “a cable and satellite television channel which broadcasts popular music and promotional music videos.” (oxforddictionaries.com.n.d.). Launched on August 1st 1981, MTV’s programme started out by helping musicians gain exposure through music videos. This helped TV audiences connect with music by new means. As MTV became more recognised, the network branched out by creating new means of entertainment. MTV has remained relevant by continuously adapting throughout its existence to meet their audience’s entertainment requirements. (International MTV and Globalisation).
Mtv has been going strong for almost 30 years. In the beginning, they were told they played too many videos, now they are known for not playing enough videos.
When speaking economically, the digital music sector of the international music industry is undoubtably the most important sector in the industry. Within the last decade, music has seen cardinal changes in the way both major and independent labels distribute their products. An industry that once relied on Payola 's and mass distribution of physical records and CD 's now relies heavily on the power of the internet. The first instance of mass distribution of music through the internet was by the service Ritmoteca.com in 1998 [1]. Ritmoteca had a library of over 300,000 songs, offering individual songs for 99 cents each and albums for $9.99. After signing distribution deals with many major music labels such as Warner
In the midst of the United States’ “dot com bubble” (years 1997-2000), there was a surge in technology that brought about file sharing and digital downloads. Threatening the survival of the music industry and introducing a unique set of challenges for the industry to overcome. To remain relevant in the new global market of digital music online, the music industry would have to evolve and change with the introduction of each new facet technology had to offer. The introduction of digitally compressed music files, so easily attainable for a small fee or downloaded legally (pirated) for free, made the music industry reevaluate how to make a profit and protect copyrights. Social media created a visible opportunity for both consumers and artists to maintain digital relationships while providing a platform for consumers to follow and discover new musicians and bands, naturally, making the internet a promotional medium for artists. As the corner record shops closed to make way for virtual storefronts and instant downloads; the internet, digital downloading, and social media made an enormous impact on the music industry that has changed the way consumers purchase, source, listen to, and produce music today.
No one can deny that technology is actively changing the music industry. Production, distribution and sales of music have been affected dramatically within the last 10 years along with artists, composers, and technicians. Most of the changes have been great for consumers, but vastly negative for professionals in the music industry, however a few artists have found ways to adapt to the changing atmosphere of digitally downloaded music and use it to their advantage. We’ve seen music change form from physical, tangible products like records and CD’s to electronic single tracks stored in an invisible cloud. Two major factors in this sudden revolution are online music stores (specifically iTunes) and file sharing websites that allow music to be downloaded illegally.
Nowadays, teenagers are living constantly surrounded by technology. Even if the younger generation may not see it, technology has had an impact on different factors. The widespread use of digital technology in the music industry has allowed consumers to reproduce digital versions of copyrighted songs inexpensively, with the help of many software and websites. There has been an increase in digital copying activities and those are most of the time claimed responsible for producers’ loss in revenues. While some people claim that the increase of digital technology has killed the music industry, in fact it has lead to innovation and new ways of consuming and sharing music, such as
Is entertainment destroying or benefiting modern society? There is no doubt that entertainment is the main source of amusement for many today. It is used in almost every common man’s daily life, from watching TV to listening to the news. However, entertainment has unfortunately become deeply saturated in people’s lives, to the point where it is no longer healthy or beneficial. The utilization of entertainment has become an addiction, thus giving it the capability to annihilate society. From the adult industry to television shows, one conclusion is inescapable” entertainment is, indeed, a dangerous tool.
In this article, Peterson and Berger show how the organization of the popular music industry affects the music that America hears.
Both MTV (Music Television) and BET (Black Entertainment Television) do not just play music videos. They also have interviews with musicians. This is another way for a musician to be recognized. Even if the audience doesn’t even hear a song from the musician being interviewed, they have still been introduced to the musician and the next time they are out buying CDs they may come across a CD from that musician and want to try it out. Shows dedicated to music also usually have a top ten countdown. To make it to the top ten countdown, the musician already has a lot of people listening to their music, but can still gain a lot more listeners. Just because it’s on the top ten doesn’t mean everyone has heard it, so if someone watching sees the video for the first time the musician may have gained another listener to buy the album.
