Throughout the semester of participating in KN 248, my lifestyle has changed in many ways. At the beginning of the semester, I was recovering from a hip surgery and partaking in physical therapy. I was also easing into the college experience after recently graduating high school. I became aware of many different aspects that contribute to my wellness other than just exercise. The list could continue to go on but, these are just a few specific examples. Over the course of this semester, I have participated in a variety of activities that benefited my well being. For example, I made the choice to change how much water I was drinking. At the beginning of the semester I rarely drank any but, through the behavior change process (Transtheoretical model) I now drink 32 ounces or more of water daily. I started by making a goal to drink 64 ounces a day but, I found that to be unmanageable, so I changed it to 32 ounces and have been successful ever since. By drinking water, I have benefited in several ways, including, healthier skin, fewer headaches, and I have also increased my Physical Wellness. I also worked on my Physical Wellness by attending physical therapy and going to doctor appointments. Over the summer I had hip surgery and was on crutches for 3 months, so I attended physical therapy to gain muscle endurance in my leg and to also build muscle around my hip to reduce re-injuring. I also decided to take on exercising on my own time, by creating a fitness plan. In this plan,
In everyday life many people develop habits, but it is never too late to attempt to change that bad habit to live a healthier life. For this behavioral change project, I was asked to choose a health behavior that I would like to change for the better. So, I decided that I wanted to increase the amount of water I was consuming each day. The standard recommendation on how much water an individual should consume is about 64 ounces daily. However how much a person should drink is more individualized then one might assume. Therefore, for this particular project my goal was to at least consume 64 ounces of water daily as a baseline starting point. I also had to consider days when I worked out. So, I decided that I would attempt to increase that amount
Recently I have been motivated by my friend Adrian’s life changing decision of putting behind his desire of just letting go and being determined to live a healthy life. I have always had an active life and enjoy playing sports but figured that it wouldn’t be enough and I am currently on a diet which has cut down on my calorie and sugar level intake. Nowadays I take the time to read nutrition labels and measure portion sizes which make a great difference. Every now and then I have a break and consume foods that are not healthy but I now I am doing better now. It is a constant struggle to not get tempted into a delicious looking pizza or some perfectly rounded donuts but I stay motivated to achieve my
My physical wellness continued to increase, my stress management as well and also my time management increased. Similar to my first year in the program as entering my second year my physical wellness increased. I’ve been trying to live a healthy life and having a better diet, I thank Colonel Oetjen for this and how he gave me a lecture in my first year after he saw me drinking my regular 1.5 litter soda, and explained how sugar was bad for you and how he said “white death’. I can say my stress management has improved because of my time management skill increasing, with priorities this better I have more time and are less stressed. I adapted a new quote over that summer to help me with my time management and that is Stephen Covey quote “The Key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your
Staying healthy has contributed to my everyday life in a significant amount of ways. From the time I was in seventh grade until my sophomore year of high school, I participated in track and field. In addition, I also played basketball and did cheer my seventh grade year, I took a weight class my sophomore year and took part in CrossFit outside of school. I have also tried many different diets, eating healthy, and even the delicious smoothies that are filled with vegetables and fruits.
During the time in my PED 101 yoga flow class I finally got the privilege to enforce a physical activity and this has given me some insight of how being physically active can change you not just physically. Mentally I feel that I can focus more and handle test better, I am less emotional, and have increased my social outlook and my interactions with people. This is evidence of the divine act of wellness and how dimensions often effecting many other aspects of one’s life ultimately for the better. However, with their also being an online portion I got educated on the different aspects of maintaining one’s health and certain things that goes into it or effect it.
The purpose of this paper is to explain my definition of Intellectual, emotional, social and physical wellness. Also the purpose is to set certain goals for myself so I have a standard that I can attain to.
I want to continue drinking more water every day rather than drinking a lot of sodas, because I felt a positive change in my body within the first two weeks of tracking my behavior change. Being in a better mood and having more energy has allowed me to accomplish, without getting tired, more in one day than I have since I was a little child. Before this behavior change project, I always told myself that I needed to drink more water because I know that it is better for me than sodas, or other drinks with a lot of sugar in them. Although I did not completely reach my long-term goal of drinking eight glasses per day, I still feel very accomplished and proud of myself. I was able to get up to drinking seven glasses of water per day rather than only drinking water when I ran out of sodas in the refrigerator. Without completing and reaching all of my short-term goals, I most likely would not have gotten so close to my long-term goal of drinking eight glasses of water every
My original plans for academic success were decimated. Still, as I entered college I reverted back to my original ideal. Perhaps it was the sense of renewal or a change in perspective that spurred me back on track. I truly believed I was going to hold myself together long enough to become the successful student I needed to be, my original self. I did not even last four months. This time was different, though. Instead of pushing through the anxiety and depression to finish, the way I had my freshman and sophomore years, or letting everything pass without a care, like junior and senior year, I made a decision to stop. I left college and everything I had spent my entire life working for to focus on my health, because I was not going to survive
Environmental factors play a great role for determining the likelihood of students encountering alcohol, not necessarily consuming it or consuming it excessively (College Drinking: Changing the Culture, High-Risk Drinking in College). After comparing different universities with different demographic makeups, it was found that predominantly single ethnic or minority schools tended to have lower rates of excessive alcohol use among its students when compared to predominantly white, coeducational schools (College Drinking: Changing the Culture, High-Risk Drinking in College). Two of the most common and widespread campus organizations that have been shown to encourage student consumption of alcohol are emphasized athletic programs and Greek systems (College Drinking:
The goal I chose is to live a healthy lifestyle which in terms will add years to my life. In this transformation I chose to eat healthier, exercise more, drink plenty water and add supplements to my personal wellness plan. I will devote a significant amount of time to each area of this wellness plan over the next eight weeks to get the ultimate results. Below are specific goals and a plan of action that I will be doing over the course of eight weeks; in an effort to make lifestyle changes. I will be reviewing the various area of my health deciding which areas I would like to make improvements. My present situation is that I have gained a significant amount of weight that has made my life a little uncomfortable. I started by making a chart to track my plan of action in each area that I will be working on.
In the past few weeks, I have attempted to exercise at least 5 times a week, challenge myself by eating more fruits and veggies, drinking more water, eating more superfoods, and getting at least 8 hours of sleep at night. I also worked on overall improving my own wellness with more meditation, winding down at night before sleeping, and dumping the processed, unhealthy foods. At the beginning, I thought this would be simple, but as days passed, I soon realized how unhealthy my usual lifestyle is and how much better I was feeling focusing more on my health. From running a mile around the neighborhood to sleeping more at night, I saw an improvement physically and mentally.
I began to slack off on my exercising, being that I could already lift a great deal more than any of my friends, not to mention I had gained an additional five pounds bringing my total weight gain to twenty pounds. Adding even more difficultly to maintaining my exercise routine, I took on a career as a traveling salesman, requiring me work long days and living out of hotels most of the year. I also continued in poor eating, abuse alcohol, and sleep for only a few hours a night. Over the next two years of irregular and undedicated exercise, I had lost ten pounds and nearly all my strength. I began to notice my life style had suddenly taking a toll on my overall health, sending me to the emergency room on several occasions. I soon realized that I needed to make a change in my life style or it was going to destroy me. I again turned to exercise for the answers I needed to make the change. I had heard many times before, while talking to other people who worked out, that it is very important to eat healthy, get enough sleep, and avoid alcohol if I wanted to see results from exercising. I was always quick to brush off advice like this, because I seemed to be making progress without following such strict rules, but I knew now that I need to make a change. I set out to achieve a healthy life style and began to use exercise as a source of
There are many personal self-care activities that are extremely important to our health. As a college student I chose an activity that I believe is one of the most important as well the most difficult for college students to do, exercising. I believe physical activity to be one of the most important personal self-care-activity a person can do to help improve their overall health. As a college student I have experienced what most college students or soon to be college students dread the most; “the freshman 15” which could easily be avoided with simply some exercise. Although many things lead to the freshman 15 such as irregular eating habits, stress, and lack of sleep I am going to discuss just how important exercise is as well as how it could help improve your overall health.
I have had to use these concepts in my career because I continue to be physically active as well as encourage others to stay physically active for the recommended periods of time to ensure their health. Even though the obesity rate has been increasing in the past, thanks to regulations of exercise the rate of obesity in America has decreased and is predicted to continue decreasing. I know I am just one person, but the optimism I gained from KIN 250 has allowed me to push for change and help one person at a time. The course also helped me understand the importance of scholarly study in my field *** The course and my degree in Kinesiology has shaped me into the professional I am because I gained a foundation of knowledge that I use in my career, I was allowed opportunities that helped improve my professional portfolio including my resume and cover letter, and I was able to network with connections that I made within the program in my post graduation
We only have one life to live so make the best of it right? From a health standpoint, there are many factors that can influence the way we live. There are some things that just cannot be avoided through heredity and other causes. But we can still choose to live a healthy lifestyle to better our chances. In my life in particular, I’ve discovered some poor dietary selections and my activity level can be greatly improved from the sedentary state that I exhibit now. From the Personal Health Inventory, the Family History, and my fitness plan I was able to gather information to plan for a better life and try to make to best of it.
