“Did you know, 20% of Canadians will experience a mental illness in their lifetime” (Canadian Mental Health Association, 2015), of that more than 350 million people of all ages will be affected by depression? Depression is a mood disorder caused by an overwhelming feeling of sadness and loss of interest. It has a negative effect on how one goes through their day to day activities. Depression is more than just having a “bad day”, it is a serious mental disorder that can harm people’s lives. The causes of depression are widely ranged. The debate between if depression comes from a nature vs nurture environment is highly looked into. Depression is backed up and proven by scientists and researchers to come from a person’s personal events, can be caused by a person’s biology, or even the abuse of substances is proven to have an impact on the cause of depression as well. The events in a person’s life can have increase ones risk of clinical depression. These events can have an immediate effect on a person or it can develop later in life. Going through traumatic events may change ones mental health causing them to become depressed. This is an example of the nurture effect; the behaviour is something that happens to a person not something they are born with. Events such as death of a family member, a divorce, or even natural disasters are known to cause a person to become clinically depressed. Scientists believe that events like this will increase ones risk of becoming depressed
“Recent data estimate the overall prevalence of depression at about 11.1% of the American population, or nearly 35 million individuals (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011). A predictive models suggest that up to 50% of the population will experience at least one episode of depression during their lives” (Life Extension, 2014). Depression has negatively affected the lives of many individuals throughout the world. Look around you there may even be someone close to you that is demonstrating signs of its stifling affects. Depression does not discriminate with its suffocating
Biological explanations however ignore the fact that nurture can play a significant role in the development of depression for instance some people develop depression (unipolar or bipolar) after a tragic event such as a death of a close family member. Therefore how can those individuals have genetic changes that only get triggered when something horrible happens in the person’s life time?
Depression is a debilitating mental disorder, which can be detrimental to a person’s way of living. For example, depression can cause an individual to have negative thoughts, experience chronic distress, and hopelessness (Pourbabaee, n.d.). Researchers focus on two causes of depression. Those who support the cognitive-behavioral perspective believe depression results from faulty thinking associated with low self-esteem or learned helplessness, as well as environmental influences such as the loss of a loved one or a job. Whereas, those who support the biological perspective believe depression results from the genes a person inherits, chemical imbalances that change the functions of the brain, as well as damage to the anatomy of the brain.
Depression is a serious mental health illness when left unattended, and it affects not just the mind but the whole body. It is characterized by hopelessness, loss of interest, sadness, lack of sleep or too much, loss of appetite and suicidal thoughts. When one has an episode, there is a possibility of having more episodes in the future. According to Statistic Canada (2012), depression is one of the common mental illnesses in Canada. Statistic Canada’s (2012) Canadian community Health survey (CCHS) on mental health report state that 6.7% of 15 years and up has depression, while 11.6% of 1 in every 8 has major depression. (“6.7% of the Canadian population aged 15 years and above reported symptoms that met the criteria for depression. On the other hand, 1 in 8 adults with 11.6% identified symptoms that met the criteria for major depression”). Craft and Perna (2004) gives a rough estimate pf depression in US adult to be 9.5% yearly and projection of 17% in the future.( stated that depression affects “roughly 9.5% of the US adult population each year, and17% more will suffer at some point in time”). As reported by Statistic Canada depression runs across young adults to adults, which implies that depression is not a respecter of age.
Major depressive disorder has caused many people to commit acts of insanity and has destroyed lives. It is defined as a mood disorder that will cause a constant sad feeling. This is because it affects how you think behave, and feel. these affects may lead to emotional problems and make you think that life is not worth living. It has been shown to affect twice as many women than men but is common for both genders at the ages of 25-44. It can effect about 10%-25% of women and 5%-12% of men. This disorder has many impacts on society as well. An example would be that people with Major depressive disorder may be caused to take more sick days and when they are actually at work, they tend to not do as well as their co-workers. There are some organizations
It became clear what Tom was going through and why (Given, et al., 2004). Another point to add here is that Tom might have gone through depression during his father 's final days and after (Gries, C. J., Engelberg, R. A., Kross, E. K., Zatzick, D., Nielsen, E. L., Downey, L., & Curtis, J. R. 2010), and it is a possibility that he is picturing himself going through the same pain of loss with regards to his mother, which is causing him depression. Moreover, a final revelation by Eric was that Tom has turned towards alcohol for support and has made a routine of drinking excessive alcohol every other day until he can no longer stay awake. Again, alcohol can be a major contributor to depression and can increase the chances of it becoming
Sociologists report how different people get along together in groups. They field of study refinement , sociable institution and they affect individuals. The sociology of depression incorporates the cultural acceptable context in which people live, as well as the social pressure that people encounter as a part of life. The sociological aspects of depression are both influenced by and also influence the other biological and psychological aspects of people's
Depression is a condition that affects people more primarily in the work force, it lasts forever if untreated. In the United States those with depression are “two times to three times more likely to be unemployed, and their employment rate is 15 percentage points lower than for those without depression” (by Christopher Prinz from PBS Newshour). It is not easy for someone with depression or any mental illness to apply for jobs or get interviewed. I believe that people, especially in the work force always see you as weak minded if knowing about the depression. Look at it this way, a job is rarely understanding when it comes a mental illness, just like a therapist or physciatrist when it comes to the workforce, they want you to be happy and healthy
Depression does not have a single cause, but rather it develops from the combination of psychological, social, cultural, biological, and environmental
Depression has numerous causes and effects which affect not only the person but the people around them. Depression doesn’t have a specific cause; in most cases it’s different for everyone. It is a common, treatable mental illness that can be experienced at any time in life. It is often described with feeling sad, unhappy, miserable, or “down in the dumps”. Most people have these feelings on occasion. There are several types of depression. These different types of depression describe slight, but often important, diagnostic differences. True clinical depression interferes with mood disorder in everyday life for weeks, months, or even years. Most people think depression affects only one
Depression is the most common of all psychological disorders, affecting 100 million people worldwide. The depression ranges from mild feelings of uneasiness, sadness, and apathy to intense suicidal despair. (Kasschau) If left untreated, it could lead the
The inability of people to control their emotions has been the onset of enough tragedy to put Shakesphere 's works to shame. Many times it is wilful lack of restraint that leads to these misforunes, however, there are cases where people have their entire lives ruined by their own hand without the ability to control the feelings that arise and give way to their detrimental impulses. These people suffer from bipolar disorder which is an affliction of the mind that causes the emotions of a person to fluctuate rapidly and more vigorously than normal people. The variation in feelings is brought about by changes in the psyche incited by episodes of elevated moods and periods of depression. The exalted disposition is known as mania or hypomania depending on the severity. During this phase, the victim may feel and/or act abnormally cheerful, sprightly, or contentious. Decisions that are poorly thought out are a common occurence from people suffering in this state of the sickness, and little concern is given to the consequences of their actions. On the other hand, people in the depressive stage develop an excessively morose attitude that can bring about self-loathing, apathy, self-injury, and other injurius feelings. The risk of self-injury and even suicide are quite high with suicide occuring in over 6% of people with the disorder and self harm occuring in 30-40%. The effects of either aspect of the disorder are enough to impair the quality of a person 's life, but in
Everyday, billions of people read whether they want to or not because it helps them do copious amounts of daily actions, such as reading signs while driving or ordering food at a restaurant. Everyone likes to read because society requires everyone to read to perform almost everything in life, so why can’t people read to help clear their minds? In today’s society, a newly introduced psychiatric therapy called bibliotherapy helps restore many people’s ailments, such as depression, one piece of literature at a time. Depression is a major disorder that thousands have had to live with everyday, but less than half go to a form of therapy for the disorder. Bibliotherapy can either be prescribed by themselves or they can get a doctor to give recommendations. Bibliotherapy helps with depression by showing better results than other therapies and by empathizing with many characters and situations within different pieces of literature, such as novels, self-help books, and poetry.
Depression is more than just a feeling of sadness; it can easily gain control of an individual’s life if these feelings continue.
