The Earth's Climate Has Changed Throughout History

The society of the modern day and age is characterized by a wide array of elements, such as unprecedented levels of technologic development, ongoing fights for human rights and societal development, but also high levels of environmental threat. The global warming phenomenon has, for decades, been assessed with importance and reticence alike. While some would argue the severity of the raising global temperatures, others would attest that global warming was a make belief phenomenon. Today however, as science has proven the existence of the phenomenon, more measures have to be taken to ensure environmental stability.

Climate change is evident throughout the world and is a major issue. It is no secret that our planet is getting warmer. Global warming is now recognized in the scientific community as a real problem. There are multiple aspects that are causing this issue. Majority of the warming is caused by greenhouse gases. Volcanic eruptions and changes in the intensity of solar radiation have offset the warming partially. It is estimated that average annual temperatures will increase 3.5°F-9.5°F by the century’s end.

Climate change can be defined as a significant change in the “average weather” of any given region sustained in the long-term and can be caused by Earth 's dynamic processes, external forces including variations in sunlight intensity, and also by human activities (USEPA, 2014).

Global warming is drastically changing the world’s climate, causing temperatures and sea levels to rise noticeably. Caused by the usage of greenhouse gases, global warming has brought about extensive controversy concerning its causes and even its existence. Although it is an issue of ongoing concern,many make no modifications in their daily lives. Global warming remains a substantial issue for the world's people, animals and the environment; its ill health effects, forced relocations and the killing off of the food sources combine to make it a widespread problem that requires immediate attention and action.

The Earth's climate has changed throughout history. According to the findings of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the change of the earth’s climate has evolved through time. The global sea level rose about eight inches in the last century; the planet's average surface temperature has risen about 2.0 degrees Fahrenheit since the last 19th century; the oceans have absorbed much of this increased heat of 0.302 degrees Fahrenheit since 1969; the increasing number of record high temperature and intense rainfall events since 1950; and the overall increase of ocean acidification by about 30 percent. Most of these climate changes are attributed to very small variations in Earth’s orbit that change the amount of solar energy our planet receives. The heat-trapping nature of carbon dioxide and other gases was demonstrated in the mid-19th century. There is no question that increased levels of greenhouse gases cause the Earth to warm in response.

Earth’s climate system has been experiences changes during the last century. Dating back in 1859 a Swedish scientist named Svante Arrhenius was the first to claim that fossil fuel combustion eventually resulted to the contribution of global warming. According to S.M. Enzler MSc, in his article “History of the Greenhouse Effect and Global Warming”, published by Lenntech, Dr. Arrhenius’ findings were long forgotten, “At that time it was thought than human influences were insignificant compared to natural forces, such as solar activity and ocean circulation. It was also believed that the oceans were such great carbon sinks that they would automatically cancel out our pollution.” (Enzler 1.). Global Warming was just an illusion up until the mid-1900s a scientist named Gilbert Plass began experimenting with carbon dioxide which he soon concluded that adding more carbon dioxide to the atmosphere would intercept infrared radiation, that is otherwise lost to space, thus warming the earth. Dr. Plass’ conclusion is very similar to that of Dr. Arrhenius, and the reason why it was not overlooked was due to the advances in technology during Dr.Plass time, proven to have a more accurate data compared to the past. Further research was conducted to help explain the rise in the global annual mean temperature. As of 1988 it was finally acknowledged that climate was warmer than any period since 1880. I agree that

Global warming is and has been known as one of the largest and most challenging problems that pertains to the environment today. Around the world many are experiencing negative impacts on the daily, those from farmers to those living in more forest like environments. As the ecosystem becomes more and more devastated, awareness and prevention of climate change has never been more important. I think that the most interesting connection between historical and recent climate change is is the cycle. Over the last 600 million years or so, the earths climate has gone through many cycles, some short and relatively mild and some long. It is not surprising that the Earth’s climate has changed rapidly through the century. What really comes as a surprise, however, is that almost everyone acknowledged the notion that climate change is man-made. Why particular phenomenon existed? With innumerable signs given by our planet, like global sea level and temperature rise and shrinking ice sheets, it is beyond doubt that our climate is changing. Yet, climate change authentically is an action of the nature itself.

Global warming is a huge issue that we have to deal with. The world is getting warmer. Whether the cause is human activity or natural variability most of evidence says it is because of humans. Thermometer readings all around the world have risen steadily since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain (“earthobservatory”).

In recent years, the controversial subject of global warming has been more predominantly brought to our attention. Is the threat of global warming real? Is it man-made or is this just a natural cycle of earth? Does it really affect earth’s inhabitants? Should action be taken against it? If so, what kind and to what extent? It cannot be only a coincidence that the alarmingly rapid climate change coincides perfectly with the increased amount of pollutants that humans release into the environment. The once stable climate has in recent years begun to skyrocket, thus altering the delicate structure of earthly life. Climate change occurs when there is a significant variance in the climate which last for several decades or longer and not for a short period of time. Climate change includes changes in elements such as temperature, precipitation and wind patterns.

The disasters of global warming struck the entire earth community. From the last century, our motherly earth rises 1 degree celsius on its average temperature (logos--Number and statics). People are having terrible heat stroke and other health problem like headache and fever. And according to World Health Organization in 2010, more than 135000000 people’s health suffered from this extreme misery from days to days (logos--Number and statics).

Climate is the term used to describe the average atmospheric conditions such as temperature, rainfall, ice cover, wind speed and wind direction of a region over a long time period exceeding 10 years. Therefore climate change is used to describe the fluctuation of average atmospheric conditions. The earth has always gone through periods of climate change and the current geological period is referred to as the Holocene. The Holocene period accounts for the last 11 700 years and is believed to be an interglacial epoch, which is a period of warming in an overall era of cooling. Within the last 11 700 years the earths atmosphere has continued with this overall warming trend with an increase in the speed of warming within the last 40 years. This is shown in figure one below, this graph shows the global land temperature anomalies from the years 1880 to 2014. From observing this image you can clearly see a dramatic increase in temperature since mid 1970s, in the last 40 years there has been more temperature variation than the previous 94 years.

Global warming is a series issue, threaten the natural life in our planet and reduce the efficiency of it to manage life, as a sequence, climate change causes several inflexible phenomena, influence people’s life in bad manner, this may continue to affect the future too.
