Characterization: The Duchess of Wiltshire’s Diamonds In The Penguin Book of Gaslight Crime, Guy Boothby writes a story The Duchess of Wiltshire’s Diamonds where he tells a story about a guy name Simon Carne who creates a false-bottomed box to look like the original one with the diamond necklace in order to steal the necklace from The Duchess. A detective who is well known in the city was asked to help to solve the mystery of the stolen diamonds not knowing that Klimo is indeed Simon Carne in disguise. In comparison to Peter Parker who is also Spiderman in disguise, there’s always another side to a person. Throughout the story Boothby uses major and minor characters that plays significant roles by the identity of their character. Boothby describe the major character Simon Carne as a man with a large hump back and is interested in Indian art. Even though she is not one to have another identity to her like Carne, her character is important. She was the one who’s the diamond necklace belonged to and was stolen from her out of her home. In the story she is identified as the innocent one. “Perhaps it would interest you to see my famous necklace” (Boothby 31). When the Duchess says that to Carne she then has no idea what was going on and what has going happen to her necklace and she trusted him. Once the diamond necklace was stolen Boothby reports, “the Duchess was far too upset by the catastrophe to see any one” (44). From that description we can tell how much the necklace meant to her and how she didn’t know that after showing Carne the necklace hours before and having it returned that it was going to get stolen.
