“I can’t do this”. (Lu 223) The Colonies are invading the Republic because a disease caused by the Republic was spreading through their land. The only way to stop the Colonies is to find a cure for the disease. In the dystopian book Champion by Marie Lu the dual first person point of view shows how Day’s and June’s decision contrast because of the way they think. When Day sees the patriots he reacts with emotion however when June sees them she keeps her cool. Day is worried about the poor being evacuated so he asks the elector, the Republic's leader where they are going to be sent. Day wants the poor to be treated equally so he pressures the elector into making it easier for the poor to be evacuated. During the evacuation of the capital city Day thinks about the poor and his brother being evacuated prompting him to ask the elector, where are the poor being sent? During the evacuation June thinks about getting out safely and Day’s brother. This shows how Day uses his heart and thinks about everyone. Compared to June who uses more logic and just thinks about getting her job done of getting out safely.“Where are you evacuating the poor”. (Lu 109) When the elector tells Day the poor aren't his first priority he stays back to help them. June does not like this idea but …show more content…
When Day can't handle seeing June and being reminded of his family this causes him to go back to his house. Will Day be able to cope with being reminded of his family every time he sees June? “Help me I whisper desperately”. (Lu 223) Day being with June is a reminder of all the family he lost and it makes it hard for Day to be with her. If Day were to think more logically he would know what's best for him. June realizes this and thinks it will be best for Day and her to not be together. June using her mind and heart knows they can't be together. Day using just his heart thinks he can have a life without pain and
In Marie Lu’s Legend, Day shows his true character when he faces tough obstacles and rigorous tasks throughout the novel. For example, Day’s valor/bravery shows when Day rushes into the hospital to find the cure for his family. This shows that without a care for his own well-being he is looking for what's best for the ones he cares about. This also shows that even though he knew the consequences he still decided to look for the greater good.
Cheryl Fynn is Maddie’s mother in the book. At the beginning, she can be described as uncaring, depressed, and addicted. For example, “ Still, it’s not like Ma takes care of herself. She smokes, drinks, but mostly doesn’t care.”, Maddie says. It also shows this trait when Maddie states, “ Ma won’t even answer the door for sweet Mrs. Duncan, who used to bring over cookies and baked goods all the time.”

Ray Bradbury’s story “All Summer in a Day” starts out on a rainy day on the planet Venus. Although it wasn’t just that day that was rainy, it’s been rainy every day for seven years. As there was a time long ago when the sun casted on this rainy planet, the children on Venus could not remember. Except for one, Margot a young girl that had just arrived from Earth four years ago. She remembers the warmth and brightness of the sun while she lived in Ohio with her family. At her new school on Venus, Margot shares her memories of the sun with her classmates. Her classmates don’t remember the sun causing them to get jealous and them to hurt Margot later in the story. This suggests that when people can’t get over their
Sue Monk Kidd has introduced very complex, yet simple characters that can be easily related to by many readers of the novel. Rosaleen has a tough exterior, but truly cares for Lily Owens, as T.Ray Owens is unpleasant, and considered to be abusive toward Lily. Further on, we have Zachary Taylor, a handsome, charismatic football player while working for August in her honey house develops feelings for Lily, as there’s June Boatright with a heart of gold, yet is distrusting in regards to Lily at first. These character are just a few of the many that entail the plot, and make them relatable. Although, like I said Sue Monk Kidd has developed many character that we can relate to, I believe I relate to Lily Owens the most in “The Secret Life of Bees.”
In Across Five Aprils, a book about a boy during the civil war, Jethro, the main character, has to mature and grow faster than most boys his age because of the war. In the novel, the actions of Bill and Shad in addition to Jethro's first trip to Newton help shape Jethro into a young adult.
Day in the life film “Thunder Road” (Jim Cummings, 2016) won the Short Film Grand Jury Prize at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival with one shot – a single long take. James gives a eulogy at his mother’s funeral, a painful situation portrayed as dramatic and comedic. In this short film stylistic choices indicate realism in a character driven story of James mourning. A single long take technique is used to present a reality unfolding in real time. James emotional performance is emphasized in the camerawork with a realistic style, representing the mourning of his mother that drives the
In The Penguin Book of Gaslight Crime, Guy Boothby writes a story The Duchess of Wiltshire’s Diamonds where he tells a story about a guy name Simon Carne who creates a false-bottomed box to look like the original one with the diamond necklace in order to steal the necklace from The Duchess. A detective who is well known in the city was asked to help to solve the mystery of the stolen diamonds not knowing that Klimo is indeed Simon Carne in disguise. In comparison to Peter Parker who is also Spiderman in disguise, there’s always another side to a person. Throughout the story Boothby uses major and minor characters that plays significant roles by the identity of their character.
However, in those dark days that everyone has, we could all use a little sunshine. We could all use a little piece of the day. As the story progresses and we reach the near end of the novel, June and Day meet. June later discovers his identity and has his family taken along with himself.
No one in Legend is ever relaxed, and no one ever just kicks up their feet and takes a vacation. For June and Day everything is pretty much a life-or-death matter, so they’re always on the lookout or running from something. Even before Day runs into all the trouble with June, he’s in a difficult state—he’s running away from the government, scavenging for food, and trying to make sure his family stays healthy. There’s a scene that’s especially a climax in the book where Thomas confronts June and tells him that she’s under interrogation. Because of all the pressure that these characters are facing, the tone is never easygoing. It’s always got a heightened feel to it because the characters are always on their guards. And the actual plotline
Day talks as though he does not believe in himself, and that no one has need for him or that it would be better for people to think he doesn’t exist (Lu, 1). However, Day trusts people like Tess and June immediately without doubt. This set of behaviors is a result of his childhood. On the other hand, June lived a sheltered childhood, only surrounded by those of equal stature to her. She is the Republic’s prodigy, consistently being rewarded for her accomplishments. Due to this, June is naive about the surrounding world, back talking the poor, believing the Republic to be almighty and good. June talks to herself, going through the thoughts that the people around her could give her the plague, and how they barely passed the Trial, but then she reminds herself that Metias had always said to not judge the unfortunate. (Lu 97). This is the conflict between the two sides of her trust, where she must chose between what she is taught and compassion that she was shown by the most important person in her life up to this point. Day was always taught to love, but was turned away from society, meanwhile June has conflict, but was chosen by society to be put on a pedestal. These behaviors one exhibits when communicating with another person and the psychology behind why they behave that
