Recent estimates suggest that between 2.0 and 3.7 million children are being raised by lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender adults in the United States, according to the 2013 National Health Interview Survey and Gallup Poll data (Gates, 2014). The battle of equal right in many aspects for gay and lesbian couples have been going on for years, and although significant progress has been made, there are many aspects within their relationships that are not yet equal to heterosexual couples in similar situations. Gay and lesbian couples have to deal with daily discrimination within issues such as marriage, legal issues, medical issues, and mamy forms for homophobia. Adoption has been a big question and fight for gay and lesbian couples for many years, one that is still being found today. Questions of whether or not a gay or lesbian couple can “properly” raise a healthy child, if the child’s psychological development would be compromised, any many other arguments have been proposed in disapproval of adoption for these couples. Adoption is a tedious process for a heterosexual married couple and the challenges and hoops needed to be jumped through to finalize the process can be even more difficult for homosexual couples and single gay or lesbian individuals.

On the date, June 26th, 2015 the United States Supreme Court had legalized the right for same-sex marriage to be legal in all states. As the LGBTQ community and supporters celebrated this amazing accomplishment that they have waited for so many years, there are still ignorant people, who believe that same-sex marriage is not moral and there is no love, like a typical marriage between a man and a woman. The LGBTQ community continues to display that same-sex marriage is okay and love that they show for their partner is the same love between man and woman. In the article, “Gay Marriage Is Legal, but We’re Still Not Equal”, written by James Esseks had stated that even though same-sex marriage is legal in the United States, it doesn’t mean that the LGBTQ community gets treated equally like everyone else. He expresses how that the LGBTQ community should have the same human rights that everyone else has in the United States. He included that there are still problems that still occur when any couple from the LGBTQ community that get denied rights, even though between a heterogeneous couple have.

Gay and lesbian couples adopt at a slightly higher rate than married heterosexual couples. The racial/ethnic breakdown of children adopted by same-sex couples is 53% White, 14% African American, 18% Hispanic or Latino and 11% Asian or Pacific Islander ("Gayadoption.org"). Gay adoption is when a couple of the same gender tries to adopt a child that does not share their same DNA or physically come from them. Gay adoption has been a controversial topic since the 1970’s.  In California, 1979 a gay couple was the first to jointly adopt a child. Gay couples adopt because they cannot physically reproduce children like heterosexual couples. An estimated 65,500 adopted children are living with a lesbian or gay parent (Craft, "How Many U.S. Children Have Gay Parents?").Kids adopted by gay couples are negatively impacted by bullying, lack of mother and father figure and gender confusion.
